Parkgate Skate Park in North Vancouver is home to Geoff Gulevich, who grew up carving its concrete slopes and rails that are covered in graffiti. “I’ve been riding here for fourteen or fifteen years,” Gulevich says. “I love this place.” This is urban riding, Vancouver-style, and Geoff shows everyone how it’s done.
Helmets? I'm sorry but any video these days showing riders without a helmet is just a little irresponsible, especially with all that we know about head injuries.
Yes please ensure all edits online include helmets because these edits are important to the growth and development of all youth. As we know, kids copy everything they see in bike edits and parents are outdated and completely useless. We need to reign in all these irresponsible edits before its too late!
Politically correct pussies. I wear a helmet usually, but if I'm out out on a leisurely cruise or riding way within my limits a helmet is not necessary.
The worst thing about saying 'everybody always has to wear a helmet!' is that it gives more support to the dumb helmet laws that discourage people from riding bikes. This guy does a good job of explaining why helmets shouldn't be required:
The problem with the "within your limits" argument is that it doesn't account for the key element of an innocent little crash ... it's "accidental". I've crashed riding around in my backyard with my kids, my chain broke dropping into a little bowl at the skate park sending me over the bars, hit some gravel on my cruiser bike... None of these things were North Shore hucking but could still have ended very badly. So in my mind the #1 reason to wear a helmet is for the incredibly unlikely but life-destroying accidents that can happen. It's risk *mitigation* not prevention...
SHUT THE f*ck UP ABOUT THE HELMETS YOU PUSSY CVNTS!!!
Personal choice a*sholes. I almost always wear mine. No one decides that except ME! f*ck off.
Someone else might say riding off a cliff is "just a little irresponsible". Or something that you do is "just a little irresponsible". If it only affects your own safety then do what you want. I almost always wear my helmet & almost NEVER wear a seatbelt. So chew on that bitches.
Hold on... alert the media. I've just met my hero on here. Doesn't like helmets or seat belts. You're the man @freeride-forever. By the way I also admire your amazing use of the english language. Have a great day.
^ chainsawnz- it still doesn't make you any less of one of the little nosy bastards who are responsible for the pathetic attitude that personal responsibility does not exist. If a kid doesn't wear a helmet, its not because of some edit the kid saw online. Growing up I watched plenty of films of people not wearing helmets (mainly skating and bmx) but guess what? I always wear a helmet because I had a little thing called PARENTS and have something called PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY. The same goes for most everyone I know that rides. But go ahead and keep on charging the helmet brigade against all these highly irresponsible and dangerous edits.
Actually Scott it's about professional athletes and companies taking responsibility for the example set. In a world where so much data exists about the dangers of not wearing helmets vs wearing helmets I don't believe that there should ever be an edit on PinkBike's or whatever website's homepage promoting such an edit.
I also have watched many films with riders not wearing helmets but hey you know what? I always wear a helmet. I'm also an adult. It's about setting the example for the kids. These athletes have been riding for years and "know" how to fall in such a way as to protect their head. The younger generation or newer riders don't "know" how to fall and are more likely to hit their heads.
I've spoken to doctors about riding head injuries and the studies have been done (well in this country they have) and you are more likely to suffer a head injury from riding in the first 2-3 years of your riding as you just don't "know" how to fall.
By the way I never mentioned the word dangerous. Just irresponsible.
Right because one edit offsets the hundreds of others of these riders and others riding with helmets. Get off your soapbox already, you f*cking Oprah wanna-be. Seriously, its pathetic how much effort you're putting into this. Kids will do whatever they want to do and you can only hope they have good parents to guide them. Get it? PARENTING. Yeah, its more important and more influential than some friggen edits on a website.
I think it's amazing that my opinion has yourself and freeride so ruffled that you have to resort to name calling and swearing to get your point across. As plyawn said it is about risk mitigation. In MY opinion I believe that a major risk mitigation factor starts with how athletes and brands represent themselves and in MY opinion wearing a helmet in video edits is a great way of starting kids off in riding in a "safe" environment.
You've made your point scott and that is that you don't agree with me. No need to resort to the name calling .
Shall we leave it at that or should we carry on some more?
It's possible to break your back or neck and be paralyzed for life every time you ride your bike. Much more serious than a concussion. Should we demand that Pinkbike not publish any videos withour riders using neck braces and back protection?
According to the same logic as the people demanding helmets be required in all videos: Yes.
Aint ruffled, its just funnier to use swear words because I sometimes have the mentality of a 10-year-old. I think its more telling how insulted you are by peoples' posts on a website... you pussy turd nugget. Protour, good point.
For anyone complaining that this is an addidas ad and too short...you clicked on a *sponsored* link with the text: "in the first instalment of this mini-teaser-series from Adidas Eyewear..."
I just want to chime in say a few things...
It is true that riders will go their own way on the helmet deal....
In this particular case, I am a role model and should not selling helmetless riding.
Apologize for those who it offended.
Not that we need another helmet comment, but... Who needs a helmet when you're wearing Adidas shades? (Also, were they ever actually in Vancouver, and not North Vancouver?)
