Surprised to see no comments yet about the fact Rat's in a RedBull produced video. Is RedBull making videos about Monster athletes now, or will Rat have a shiny new red and blue helmet this season? Either way, stoked to see him up to speed so fast.
  • 30 2
No Monster on any of his gear in that vid, has he made the switch?
  • 27 4
 can some one translate ?

Red Bull bike has made lots of videos with riders who aren't directly affiliated with the Red Bull brand. Last season they had a video series The Guts behind The Glory where they documented the lives of various riders such as Eddie Masters, Mike Jones, Eliot Jackson and Matt Simmonds just to name a few. None of these guys are Red Bull athletes yet Red Bull made very good quality videos about them. I think it is great that Red Bull is doing this. It shows that they not only care about the athletes they sponsor, but also care about the sport of mountain biking as a whole.

Sooo happy to see him riding like always Cheers

RedBull does quite a bit of things with Non-RedBull athletes that take part in RedBull sponsored events. You see then in their magazine as well.

@fastjohn1 since when did red bull start "caring about their athletes" ??
They expect them to ride balls to the wall at rampage, for a paycheck that doesn't even cover the costs, and don't even provide insurance or support if they get hurt.....read Mark Mathews article on here recently....
  • 12 3
Didnt understand a word he was saying but still enjoyed it
  • 13 2
@robaussie99 they do care about their athletes paying their medical bills (there are recent videos of Soderstrom and mcAskill if you want to see proofs) but they don't cover every rider who rides a redbull organized event.
  • 8 1
Robaussie99 would you rather them have no sponsor at all? I would venture to guess that a redbull sponsor is better than no sponsor at all?
  • 5 0
I thought it is becouse english is not my mother language, but now I see it´s not only my probleem....
  • 5 7
josh was sponsored by monster untill now ??
  • 4 3
Insurance is part of the sponsorship negotiation that's for sure, some riders have enough leverage to force a company like Redbull or Monster to include insurance on their paycheck, some other riders just don't, so they have to settle for less and pay for it from their own dime.
  • 7 10
you guys are stupid... these sponsors do not pay for insurance. Red Bull does not pay insurance. They pay the athletes to be ambassadors for their brand. Most if not all riders have separate insurance that they arrange themselves.
  • 2 1
well, some sponsors pay .... for example RB payed for Martins Soderstrom's recovery after his massive crash at RB joyride 2013.
RB has too much money they can at least pay for the consequences of the things they "ask" from the riders they sponsor.
  • 3 0
Hutch you say "most riders have separate insurance that they arrange themselves" you do realize that they have other sponsors, why are you not complaining about their other sponsors not paying for their insurance?!? Are they not ambassadors for their brand as well? I am not crazy about redbull, but they still pay their riders to go to all of these bad ass locations on their own dime to do what most of us could only dream of doing. Yes redbull is a big company, but they do help out their riders and help put on some of the best events in mountain biking.

because i the case of red bull, they're the naming rights sponsor of the event (rampage in mark mathews case).
  • 5 4
@ robaussie99 u r a dipshit. If you enter into a competition like Rampage and don't consider either negotiating or purchasing insurance then it your own damn fault that you don't have insurance. I am so tired of everyone is a victim and entitlement in general. No one was forced to ride or compete at Rampage. I hope none of us get hurt riding but the reality is there are risk and people will get hurt. Be responsible for your own actions.

Glad Ratboy is on the up again. Great rider/attitude and hope him the best this year!

Anti-corporate rant follows. Feel free to skip.

@J50005, I hear lots of talk in the US about personal responsibility, and very little about corporate responsibility. It is very convenient to constantly throw out the call for personal responsibility and skate over any notion of corporate responsibility aside from their responsibility to turn a profit for stakeholders. I'm tired of a corporate culture that relieves them from being held to account for their willful misdeeds, e.g. financial institutions too big to fail despite the fact huge banks took wanton risks that put entire countries on the brink of financial collapse, put millions out of work and cost those responsible nothing; or mining companies that make water polluted for miles around and then file for bankruptcy rather than have to pay for the damage they caused. Chain restaurants that manipulate the bliss-point of their menus to bring customers coming back again and again despite the clear indication that what they serve is unhealthy. The list is as monstrous as the crimes for which they are not 'responsible', and since they live longer than we humans, and have no personal liability, they can have legislative agendas that are generations long to help ensure their continued growth and political power.
I like the Rampage and Joyride as much as the next person, but have no love for a range of products ( so-called 'energy drinks') that clearly are unhealthy for young people especially, to consume. They're just drug dealers who happen to operate somewhere within the lines of legality. They should pony up and take some responsibility too, not just the individual who engages in an activity they sponsor.
  • 2 3
@ reverend. I agree with everything you say up to the last sentence. If you want to hold Redbull or whatever company responsible for the health problems their products cause (and can prove it) I support you. But Redbull isn't making it's fortune on $25 admission ticket to Rampage. I understand the value on marketing/association to their brand and that has significant value. But if Redubull is responsible then isn't the manufacturers of the bike, components, clothing, and whatever else that can be associated to the event including the broadcasting network also responsible. And by the same reasoning any race promoter is then responsible, and then any bike park or land owner(including forest service/BLM) that allows any event to take place and financially benefits responsible. And how responsible are they: just for the medical bills, lost income, future lost income, mental and physical anguish, etc. I think this is a bad example of corporate responsibility and as you follow this line of reason we end up loosing events and access the very sport itself.

@JL50005, resorting to name calling removes any respectability and/or leverage you once had in a conversation. Grow up.
  • 2 4
Here we go with the 'Caffeine and Vitamins' are unhealthy/terrible/poison/toxic nonsense again....

Alan Milway, one of the main Redbull coaches personally arranged to be in charge of Ratty's rehab after Norway. It's likely there were already plans in place for him to switch over after the 2014 season or maybe he formed a relationship with them while he was going through rehab.
  • 27 4
First! Actually, stoked to see every video featuring Ratboy ever since his injury. He looks casual and relaxed, and we all know that's when he's fastest. Looking so forward to this season and wishing Josh all the best!
  • 4 1

Captain Rat Sparrow on stranger toes

I don't follow pro riders on any social media site, I give Like and unfollow quite quickly as there's limit to sponsorship thanksgiving and hashtagging the mans arse can bare. But Josh is different, his short films lighten up my day, above all his riding skill I admire him for genuine ability to enjoy himself on the bike with his buddies. Those dudes are awesome!
  • 18 3
I'm happy to see that Bryce is healthy again but I'm going to keep my expectations for him tempered a little bit for now. Looking good riding around for a video shoot its not the same as WC level competition. He had a very serious injury and even if he is healthy he likely missed out on alot of training. He was basically doing nothing much of the winter while he healed everyone else had a full off season of training. In a sport like this where the difference between winning and 25th place is a few seconds, that's going to hurt him. I'm not saying he can't do well, but I think expecting him to pick up right he left off last season would be a but unrealistic.
  • 24 0
I tend to agree. Although it wouldn't surprise me if he's right up there on a shorter track...I recall Wyndam last year in which Claudio and Warner we stunned he basically wasn't even pedaling - just not using his brakes and carrying immoral amounts of speed. Even at world champs last year he didn't seem like he was on the gas much, instead preferring to let Mr. Newton provide the kph's. Regardless, I will be pulling for him to post some great results, stay healthy and keep his raditude intact.
  • 20 0
"immoral amounts of speed".... that has to be one of the most novel phrases I've heard on PB. English is alive and well... thanks, Jackalope!
  • 3 3
You forgot to put "but I hope I'm wrong ", at the end of all that.
  • 3 0
I think you spell it rattitude.
  • 2 0
I was just about to say 'Rattitude' would be an awesome name for a video full of balls out shredding and party shenanigans.

Saw the chap doing some practice runs when I was at Revolution Bike Park last weekend and my god he was putting some pace in...... you never realise just how fast these guys are going until you see it first hand. So so good to see him back on the bigrig!
  • 24 18
I'm sure I'll get rekt with the fookin downvotes for this but I love ratboys attitude and approach to biking so much more than the goddamned athertons. I didn't know people could suck the fun out of downhilling the way they do. I have no shame saying any of this
  • 15 1
I'm not necessarily the biggest Atherton fan, but it doesn't seem to me that they "suck the fun out of downhilling" at all. There are plenty of videos out there of them having a good time (see Dan's Hardline video for example, or Gee's "Follow Me" segment). Sure, they are a bit serious on the podium, but that hardly means that all of the fun is sucked out.
  • 3 3
I get what you're saying, I guess I just resonate more with josh here.
  • 18 2
The Athertons get a load of shit, but they're cool calm pros. They all seem like down to earth people to me.

It's sad that the UK gets a nice run of top riders, (God knows we suck at most other sports), and people take the first chance to shit on the Athertons like they're old news.
  • 2 4
The Atherton vid was like watching paint dry.
  • 10 1
Boom he's back.....but never really went away...
  • 6 0
I love that he lives on a boat!

Finally I understand what he said,,..he said " It's all going well"...

Go Ratboy!!!
  • 1 0
Me too me too wait was that what he said?!
  • 3 1
In terms of injury and/or race loss prevention, I wonder if the Syndicate should get post Kathy or someone with a radar gun at certain potential "trouble spots" along the course (i.e. massive drops to flat) to help the boys keep the speeds in check? Something simple like a flashing a sign which says: "those levers near your fingers...they're called brakes...you should try them sometime...in fact, now would be a super duper good time" or "I know you've just violated a host of important laws of physics, but physics can be a real dirty b!tch sometimes and exact revenge in inopportune moments...like landing to flat at 50 kph...just a thought"

May need to tweak the wording a little, but you get the point. That way, we can avoid another Peaty's Plunge incident or World Champs ankle detonation Smile

Love this guy's attitude. He seems to truly appreciate everything about his position in life and what it takes to maintain the high level. Viva la Rata!
  • 2 0
Gives us all hope seeing his local track......until we see how fast he rides it! The man just has a more likable personality than all the others. Hope to see him up on top again this year.
  • 1 0
so good to see the rat back in action! but why is he riding a bronson as everybody and their moms rave about the new nomad?
even danny mac used the bronson in his latest video. is the bronson the better choice for pure trailriding?
  • 3 0
I think he switched sponsors. Read it somewhere. He now rides for Guinness.
