Video: Josh Bryceland's Hafjell GoPro run

Sep 8, 2014
by Fraktiv

Josh Bryceland was having the run of his life at yesterday's UCI Downhill Mountain Biking World Champs in Hafjell, Norway. Unfortunately, his quest for speed meant he overshot the wooden bridge, resulting in a broken and dislocated ankle. Everyone at Pinkbike wishes Josh a speedy recovery.

bigquotesHere's my race run from yesterday!!!! Overshot the last wooden bridge, resulting in a bust foot... Thanks to all the lads helping me out afterwards, I was in a bit of a pickle - Josh Bryceland, Santa Cruz Syndicate

he broke his foot because the pedal hit the ground...fix your bike santa
  • 6 4
lol wut? He broke his foot because he overshot the jump and landed to flat at some crazy speed. His foot was probably broken as it was wrenched off the pedal, not hitting the ground anyway.
  • 37 10
www.facebook.com/video.php?v=10154535943505024 check how he slams his pedal in the ground
  • 13 0
 he pulled a bender
  • 9 0
This is why I love the Syndicate. Smile
  • 23 1
I don't think his pedal hit the ground. After watching the video above, which is awesome btw, it looks like his foot slipped backwards off the pedal on the landing. On impact the bike compressed down and the force of his heel dragging ripped his foot off the back of the pedal. Good luck on the healing Josh.
  • 8 0
Good thing he has balls of solid steel, otherwise that rear tire might've made things worse for him.
  • 13 0
I have raced bikes for 35 years and still cant believe the level of speed and control the top finishers have in such a difficult course. Wishing fast recovery to Josh and a BIG congratulations to everyone else at this level.
  • 9 0
This ride was a motivational speech to me.
  • 6 0
He may have lost a rainbow jersey, but at least he'll be immortalised on A Question of Sport's "what happened next"?
  • 5 0
He "will" be back bigger...bader,haha ...an rattier than ever.......!!!!!!
  • 2 3
thrasher i reckon you are right, and mtb rider is a douche for being wrong. cranks are level on landing so there is no way they could hit the floor unless the compression was so bad he slips the pedals on landing which as we can see he does. poor poor sod. wishing you a speedy recovery josh. stay strong everyone is wishing you the best!

it was good to see Gee and Troy's sportsmanship- Even tho they did well, they each were more concerned with a fellow competitor health. Get better soon Rat!

I can't believe Gee gets so much shit off people on this site, yeah Ratboy would have taken the win if he hadn't flatlanded and ruined his foot but he did and he ended up second. Gee won because he had an incredible run and managed to keep it together ALL THE WAY TO THE LINE. Don't get me wrong, I wanted RatBoy to win because for me his is the epitome of what Downhill is but seriously cut the Gee man some slack. As soon as Ratty was over the line Gee went straight over to him to see what was wrong - he didn't celebrate, he wasn't punching the air or shouting and screaming - he knew RatBoy should have won himself and I think both Gee and Troy really showed their class in the way they acted after Josh crossed the line. True champions the lot of them. Peking like a chinese duck.
  • 11 3
The Gee dis actually went down the last weeks imho, which is good.
  • 49 1
I love extreme MTB because most of the time people involved are super nice and caring for each other. When I raced my first ever DH race here in Latvia and finished last like a total noob every rider was cheering me! EVERY RIDER! I see the same reaction here as well, fellow riders crashed, everyone is helping. No dicks in this sport!
  • 47 1
 Hell yeah ^^^^^

I just think all the hating on Gee is a bit unjustified really. Just because he's become a bit serious the last couple of years doesn't mean he's a total d**k. He's one of the greatest all round riders ever to walk the planet. Thats a great story Auxx. I f**king love this sport.
  • 36 2
People wouldn't be talking about Gee if he wasn't so damned good… they do the same treatment to Gwin. Once you're a champ, it's open season.
  • 15 7
One of the funniest clips is when Gee in on top of a podium (forget which race, last year I think) and Josh his beside him asking Gee "Aren't you going to sing?" the national anthem, then cracks up say "I don't know the words either". Always cutting up.
  • 19 2
its all thanks to media Smile
media wants stories and create controversy, like last year between gee and smith... media tried to make gee look like a dick and angre guy wich he is not, ive met him personally and he is a great person!
and stevie is just a awesome kid!
  • 7 0
Hotlanta, wasn't that at Cairns early this year?
  • 8 0
Watching Gee's post race interview when he is asked about Josh, it looks like he gets a little upset by being asked about him. Watching this vid, you can tell he is upset because his friend is hurt.
  • 98 1
I think they need to bring back the Atherton Project. Gee was pretty good craic in that and im sure he probably isn't much different now. We just don't get to see it.

Plus all the tits giving him shit and talking about how Josh and Sam are the real spirit of mountain biking....remind me, how many times have they taken part in Rampage? Gee is a boss.
  • 16 0
 ^^^ this guy knows!
  • 6 0
You didn't see that on the live stream. All it showed was gee smiling afterwards, but massive respect to him for reacting like that. Wouldn't get that in football or any other sport.
  • 7 6
Gee is a class act, his sister however remarked on instagram that josh f*d up...which was a little blunt and lacking in any sort of sympathy.
  • 4 1
Really nice from Tory at the end of the video when he came up to Josh and said "good run, good run". A few simple words but showing all the respect for Josh and the ride he has done. I just love this sport.
  • 4 0
She said that she felt bad and was sorry he f**d up. So it's not like ha well you suck and he doesn't so in your face. She was genuinely sad he messed up.

Would be great to put the Warner and Page commentary over the GoPro run. So, that instalment of 'This is Peaty' is going to be the most watced when it comes out. Josh Brycelandtoflatfrom20feetup. Legend.

Sucks we have to wait untill October 1.

That episode should also have when the Syndicate guys ran on the track with their pants down during Claudio's course preview.

I'm surprised warner didn't come up with RAT TO FLAT! i could hear him screaming that in the moment.
  • 25 1
I love Ratboy! Love him. Add him to the list of landmark riders, Peaty Palmer, Ratboy........ However, I do have a pet hate when folk keep saying he woulda, shoulda, coulda won, we know that to be a given, or would it have been Sam Hill. We all know that DH is about fastest to the line and what happens on the way is what you do with your race run, a mistake and you lose. Our beloved Ratboy made 1 mistake and in this case it cost him the race and his foot. Ask Peaty with his many silver medals, the mistakes are all part of this Awesome sport. Ratboy didn't win because his mistake was way bigger than Gee's. Gee wins end of.. As long as Ratboy comes back to full health I wouldn't change then 2014 champs for anyone. Although I wanted Ratboy to win the historical awesomeness of the whole thing just has to stick. There aren't enough superlatives to describe how fucking brilliant downhill is, why it's not prime time simply boggles the mind. We get ski Sunday here in the uk through the skiing season, but DH is just way way better, way way more entertaining and way way more on the edge of insanity. I luv DH 4 lyf
  • 9 0
DH racing is the best sport in the world for extraordinary skill, balls and drama etc I grew up watching football/soccer but just find it boring now. I know we all secretly revel in it being a niche sport but it pains me that UK is dominating at the minute and yet the mainstream UK media would get more excited about an equestrian event. Peaty/Gee/ Ratty should be household names for f*cks sake! On the other hand if mainstream caught on then bike park wales would be booked up 6 months in advance instead of 3 so be thankful for what you've got Smile
  • 9 0
 @Saxenalilhelperwc0708pete.very well put,RATBOY is a superstar.
British cycling is kicking arse, but i didn't see any mention of any of the recent DH title wins in the papers.
Meanwhile,a bunch of useless, over payed wankers will be on national tv tonight.
  • 6 0
the british lads are absolutely great, but don't forget the top 3 girls were all brits as well, such a shame the uk media wont give a shit though, and most of the country wont even know of the awesome talent we have both male and female
  • 3 0
 @Saxenalilhelperwc0708pete,
All that talk must come from people with little to no personal experience racing themselves. Anyone that has raced a lot will understand exactly what you are talking about. I like the old saying, "If you had woulda, shoulda, coulda, in you left hand, and $1 (or £1) in your right hand, you could buy an ice cream cone".
  • 3 0
Also, what would be the easiest way to increase the popularity of DH as a spectator sport amongst non-mountain bikers? Give Ratboy his own tv show.
  • 4 0
...and have Neko tell 'em you they don't have to pedal just pump
  • 4 3
Pisses me off that cavendish, wiggins and froome are all houshold names and get a shitload of publicity whereas the uk downhillers hardly get a mention it should be the other way round the lycra wearing wankers
  • 5 0
Don't be a cockle. Most of the DH riders you love will wear lycra also on road rides
  • 1 0
But they dont get the publicity though
  • 2 0
@jdotr, thanks for this shot, Josh's left side handlebar crushed/bent?
  • 1 0
 haha not far off!
  • 3 0
Holy crap. That could have been a massive crash. Props to the Rat for riding out of it. And into a silver medal.
  • 1 0
Jeez his poor foot! I cant believe he managed to put it back on the pedal. Curse of the commentator: Rob Warner literally seconds before uttered something like, "Surely Ratboy has the Gold in the bag..."
  • 1 0
this shot just goes so show, even beyond the helmet cam, Ratboy's amazing skill on the bike. Not only did he huck 20+ feet to flat, but he held it together after completely shattering his ankle and foot in the process. I keep saying to myself, if he only could have managed a few pedal strokes after the hit he might have pulled a gold medal out of his arse. So gutted for the Rat but he'll be back for 2015, hungrier than ever!
  • 4 0
Also goes to show that a bike length or so less and he'd probably have been OK. Fine margins
  • 19 0
This run was scary fast! One of the scariest looking runs I have ever seen!!

the ONE and ONLY ! RAT come back stronger! yuo have the time to recover and win 3 World Championship in your future. This year you found how to put down your best, ,,,and don't forget it! we all like that you have FUN during one of the most important run of your carrer...and this is the secret.
  • 9 0
Can´t beleive how the guy didn´t even make a noise when he busted his ankle, that must have hurt so bad!!!!! And the final conversation man, simply epic. One hell of a run, one hell of a track, and one hell of a rider, makes for a great and epic race and vid! Can´t wait for this is peaty, and for Ratboy to be back!
  • 7 0
"Extreme sports" need people like Josh to remember what its all about. And I absolutely love it that he is now on the very top of his sport, even with his "this is fun" attitude! Love the attitude, love the person, love the spirit!
Wish you a speedy recovery Rat!
  • 8 0
Amazing...he was literally flying through the rockgardens!! RatBoy you are the KING! - despite not getting the worldchamp crown this year. Get well soon lad!
  • 8 2
Race organizers need to really take a look at the medics that are hired to look after these fellas. This individual just stood there looking around and didn't even stabilize an obvious injured extremity or even start an assessment. Not the first time I have noticed this. Unreal.

Spot on, exactly what I was thinking.

Heal up soon Josh and look forward to seeing you smash it next year! You smashed it this year
  • 5 0
heal fast man, can't believe he kept control on the landing. that is the fastest headcam I've ever seen, we need to see Josh and Gee's run side by side to see how far ahead JB is at the jump.
  • 6 0
is it just me or is there anyone else thinks if Ratboy cut his hair short we won't be able to tell him apart from Gee? Ratboy is Gee with a wig.
  • 10 0
That is hilarious! I'd like to see Gee wearing the Ratboy wig too
  • 4 0
What a run, was crazy to watch live. totally bummed for Rat thankfully it's the end of season if there is any upside to this Frown
Heal up soon buddy and smash em all in 2015!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Smile
  • 7 0
heart was in my mouth watching him come up to the last jump.
  • 5 0
I wonder why they put such a small, by Josh standards, jump, so flying Rat missed it completely. This is racing. Don't push the Rat to use his brakes on jumps.
  • 1 0
rob and nigel were saying that about the top jumps, that alot were overshooting them and how they could have been bigger. Maybe the courses need to get a little harder now that bike technology has improved and the top guys can put down more speed.
  • 6 0
With regards to the stuff up top, you have to keep in mind the variable conditions. It was very dry and fast this week so its easy to carry the speed and make the jumps look small. But if rains and slows things down, then all of a sudden you'd have guys casing everything if they made things to big.
  • 9 0
What you guys fail to remember is, that there is also a womens' and a juniors' part to the sport. Those are often struggling to clear those massive jumps. Also, racing means that you have to adapt to the terrain and not the other way round. Anyway, the fact that he rode this out without crashing speaks volume.. dude is unreal! I really hope his injury is not as bad as it looks on those nasty pictures. Serious healing vibes, man.
  • 2 0
So gutted for Josh. I saw him in person in Cairns and he was THE nicest and most approachable guy of everyone. All the other racers are nice people too and no one was rude but Josh even went out of his way to reply to my 4 year old daughter who said hello while he was riding past us. Top bloke! So stoked he took the World Cup overall, heal up fast mate!
  • 2 0
Everyone that ran that course as fast as these boys do deserves major respect in my mind! Look how fast he's travelling down those rock gardens it's another level completely! Absolute legends, Gee, Rat, Niko, Hill, McDonald , Peaty, man it's scary how skillful the entire field is!!!! Heal Soon Ratboy and Hill, going to be a HUGE year in 2015 cannot wait!!
  • 6 0
JOSH U RATTY LEGEND!!! UNLUCKY GET WELL Smile
  • 4 0
How fast! Jesus! Growing up around legends obviously helps but I think Josh has added himself to the list this year! Get well soon Ratboy!
  • 3 0
Amazing race run and to still take second shows want might have been. Heal up quick Ratboy! Hopefully the operation has everything back in place neatly so he can defend his title properly.
  • 2 0
He didn't break before the jump, just a pity he did after the jump....... Was a great run and one hell of a ballsy attitude to the last jump. He conducted himself so well, even when obviously in a lot of pain. Hope his recovery goes well and he's out having fun again sooner rather than later.
  • 4 0
competitors, rival, friends. great to see some of the most competitive athletes in the world come over straight away to help out. I love downhill.
  • 2 0
would it be correct to say that a lot of these insanely fast runs are now possible cos of helmet cams? It used to be the case that riders would have to session parts to memorize their lines but now they can go over them time and time again the night before down to the nearest rut and tree root. So much so that they can thread the needle in some of the tech sections at warp speed. Some of lines Josh took at meribel were ridiculously precise.
  • 6 1
Gee's win will go down in the history books, but Nico's run and Rat Boy's finish will become legend.
  • 2 0
DH seriously needs to replace football on Sundays. Makes me sick seeing all the money that's wasted on a bunch of roided out dudes acting like barbarians.

Makes me even sicker that a professor on campus called my bike a fatbike today after seeing my maxxis 2.4". What the hell is the world coming too!?
  • 2 0
quality dudes all at the finish. much respect for the whole Podium crew Gee, Troy, etc, and especially calm, cool Minaar. He's a solid dude in a crisis. Really taking care of his teammate.

Hope everyone here rides with/creates a crew that rides hard and takes care of each other like these dudes...

Lands flat , breaks his foot and rides it out!!! ANIMAL Get back to it soon.

Get wel soon, awesome Ride Ratboy, complete legend on all fronts this season. Great to see the syndicate family xmas on the Peaty vid.  My god just What The Fuck dude was on fire, I'm not sure why he'd even have brakes on his bike lol. makes me think though there is me out today like fuck that root section was rough better take it slower on the next run, just no after seeing that lol.
  • 1 0
Heal up quick Josh. Wish there was some way to get a bottle of Canada's finest over to you. You deserve it. Great run, thanks for posting your cam footage. Completely epic how calm you all were. You had 2 of the best possible medics helping you out. NEXT YEAR LAD!!!
  • 1 0
I've often read people say stuff like "The top pros just float down the mountain..." but not really got it. Now I do - the camera shakes more on the flats than the rock gardens. I've always loved watching Rat's flowy riding style and am so pleased it's translating into top drawer results finally. Awesome stuff.
  • 1 0
Ouch! Every time I watch that video I cringe. I don't know how a human can ride that fast down that kind of terrain, but I do unfortunately know the feeling of watching a landing disappear behind you and hoping your suspension will take the hit as you stare at flat ground. He is lucky to have ridden away from that one. I just hope he's back next year, even faster. I'm also looking forward to the "This is Peaty" episode...
  • 1 0
Man, my heart sank at the end of that run. Get well soon rat. It was so nice to see all the other riders/teammates coming to his aid at the finish line, great illustration of the solid community we have here.

I'm just wondering, is it possible to take average biker like me and under a heavy training, let's say in few or less years, produce such a great racing machine like Rat Boy? Or some need to be supertalented to achieve what the top guys have achieved?
  • 3 0
And I would gladly stay unnoticed through my whole life in exchange for his skills. It would be amazing to experience such speed on a track.
  • 7 0
Heavy training only takes you so far. You need to possess talents that very few have, let alone actually understand. When you see these guys race in person and/or are lucky enough to be able to ride with them and try to keep up with them, you realize that no training in the world will get you there unless you have the raw, natural talent they possess. They really are the best of the best.
  • 5 2
Lot's of people have flying licenses, very few get to fly fighter jets. Some people just have what it takes, this boy has it in spades.
  • 5 2
I dont agree with that, thats just what people tell themselves to make them feel better about their riding. Sure some people have more immediate ability than others but almost all of the top guys have more hours on a bike than you ever will. Its just dedication and going out and messing around on a bike for hours on end. Its also comes from a willingness to push themselves. Sometimes i think i do a lot of training and then i realise I haven't ridden a bike in a week. I'm pretty sure these guys never spend that long off a bike unless there is a reason for it.

Its the same in all sports, Ronaldos team mates still talk about how he is the first and last person at the training ground, ie. he still spends more time practising than them now even.

So in answer to your question "is it possible to take average biker like me and under a heavy training, let's say in few or less years, produce such a great racing machine like Rat Boy?"

No, it is not possible to train for just a couple of years and be as good as that.
  • 4 0
To be at the top of the World Cup standings requires both insane hard work and amazing talent. I can practice all day, train with best trainers, be in the best shape, etc. etc. but I do not have the reaction times, the sensitivity, luck, and skill that it takes to be there. Messi and Ronaldo work insanely hard but they have the next level talent that is needed to be able to refine and hone that through practice in the first place. The talent pool known as the UK is crazy deep. Here in Austria, we have the best training grounds the world has to offer- but the best DH racer can barely break through the top 20 in WC results. Pekoll trains and practices like mad, and I guarantee you more than Ratboy. But his talent and ability is simply far below that of the Rat.
  • 3 1
There's more than just training. There is rivalry/competion...without it nobody would be able to ride like these guys do. There's also life balance, being able to separate training, screwing around, frienship, rivalry, racing, business, family, etc... this helps your mind to be cool and blank right before the race and during the race.
And there is talent, bodies are extremely different from one another so theres deffinitely a possibility that some riders are more fit for this type of riding than others.
  • 3 1
Also it comes to a question how to define talent? For some it would be strong mentality for others it might be ease of making rapid progress in riding technique. I remember once watching interview with Spanish climber Patxi Usobiaga. He stressed that his really strong side is ability to train as hell. Despite that one year he was beaten by a climber who was more focused on climbing, rather than on training (1. well in that point climbing is also training but in most sports man must have a diversified training to succeed; 2. can’t remember the other climber’s name).

I’ve noticed that I was neg propped just for expressing my thoughts? Well it clearly shows it’s way easier to thumb up comment like ‘sick video’ or ‘voood!!111!!’ rather than give a thought over something. Well done.
  • 4 0
I believe that a small but neccessary part of top level success is natural 'talent'. For example reaction times, co-ordination, how well your muscles adapt to training, height (can't help but think taller riders have the advantage of more suspension). However, commitment and mentality play a much greater role.

Commitment; are you going to go and ride every single day, even when it's cold and miserable and the trails are washed out and riding like shit? Are you going to go to the gym when your muscles are still aching from yesterday's session and push yourself to the point of collapse all over again?

Mentality: Can you switch off your instinct for self preservation and go up to the limits of control in rock gardens, off camber roots or muddy forest sections and keep it pinned knowing that you will crash and crash hard time after time after time? That's the difference.
  • 2 0
I agree with both of you in ways. I think when people talk about talent they tend to mean "Oh his body is just naturally more able to do that than mine is". That is what I disagree with. Particularly in sports like DH where there is such a huge variety in the body shape of the riders, it clearly isn't like long jump or sprinting where you (usually) need a particular body shape to be successful. I often hear guys talk about how their genetics wont allow them reach a certain level when there are women that are at higher levels than they are. I don't mean this in an insulting way but women are physically more disadvantaged than any man ever is so its not a valid excuse for most.

Mentality and commitment are the two big ones for me. And you can train both of those things also. Its just a question of if you are able to do it or not. Mental training is harder than any physical training.
  • 2 0
Wingguy, taller riders definitely have more suspension, but that comes with the disadvantage of a higher center of mass. Hard to say what plays a bigger role. I like to believe much of the talent factor comes down to how fast ones brain can process the amount of information increasing with speed. Mainly visual information i guess, although there's sound and physical feedback too. And by processing of course i don't mean conscious decisions. That would explain why many racers seem to be rather good in multiple racing disciplines. Nico Vouilloz racing rally cars after downhill comes to mind. I'm not a racer but i know the situation quite well where i think i should be physically able to ride faster in technical terrain but i can't keep up with the visual input. My brain is just too slow. As for Ratboy... it's amazing how far he has come from his wild style to being one of the smoothest riders in the field. His style through the rocks was incredible. I was so gutted to see him hurt himself like that. Hope he recovers well! And soon!
  • 2 0
the scary thing is watching it live he is so smooth that he looks like he is going slow...but watching his perspective he is just pinning it...incredible speed
  • 1 0
Damn Josh was hauling ass! Everything around looked to be going by in warp speed! It's a shame he broke his foot and was less than half a second off from Gee's first place spot. Would have been awesome to see him win
  • 3 0
Stevie Smith all over again. Can you heal from that bad a break over just one winter?
