Video: Urban Legend - Marcelo Gutierrez

Mar 13, 2014
by Clay Porter

What's it like to be a pro downhiller from Colombia? And what's it like to speed violently down steep, narrow, broken city stairs, through a tunnel of screaming fans? Giant Factory Off-Road Team rider Marcelo Gutierrez knows. This is his life. He's a rising star in World Cup downhill, and a straight-up legend in the urban downhill game. This is Marcelo's world like you've never seen it before.

did you notice the huge flex of the wheels on the slow mo images
  • 4 1
 Oh yea......tons
  • 3 0
 DT Swiss wheels?
  • 1 0
doesn't seem like a DT swiss problem
  • 1 0
Definitely a Giant problem, not a DT Swiss problem...
  • 2 0
At the speeds he's hitting things, it's no wonder there's flex. Flex isn't always a bad thing though - It can make the rough stuff a little easier to control, sometimes improving grip and cutting out trail chatter.
  • 3 0
Yep, its a huge problem and is holding him back! Giant should be ashamed of making such a poor handling bike (sarcasm!)

You are always going to get flex in a wheel and as has been mentioned a little flex is not a bad thing.

Amazing video, top guy and awesome dad.

I met Marcelo last summer when he was traveling the North America east coast and had the pleasure of doing a trail ride with him. He is the real deal. I remember asking him about the urban races. I expected him to shrug it off, but he surprised me by saying how parts of those courses cause genuine fear. Fear that has to be overcome. Can't wait to watch him on the WC circuit this year.

Good to see something by Clay Porter, his work is always top notch, but I always wish he would come out with a bit more material. Now that we are all stoked on his work, it would be a great time to unveil that Peatys documentary is coming out soon. I have been dying to watch that one for ages!

I got the chance to meet Marcelo last year when he was here in the states, he was staying with a friend while training at Mountain Creek. He tore up that mountain like no ones business. I swung by the house one day as I picked up some brakes and Marcelo installed them for me. The guy is just so genuine personal and down to earth. I will be rooting for him this year all the way...
  • 2 0
Did the brakes worked right, cus he is not really good with mechanics! hahahaha... He is awesome anyways!
  • 3 0
Lol well i am still alive, :-) He actually pulled it off well and had them lined up perfect...
  • 5 0
great edit, but rockshox come on can we please have the black box forks!? you would be doing all of us a favor by making every bike that has one 43.36547% sexier.

Judging by your number, you used a number pad to type that? Only on a keypad is that number and decimal point a continuous, albeit curvy, line.

One of the best edits and cinematography I have seen in a while. The tight slo mo shots are an eye opener. As in how a bike performs under race conditions. The city race is wicked!

I wish Red Bull and Monster would stop making their riders wear their hats.
  • 7 0
Well if you sign a contract and they pay you 40 grand a year they basically own your head
  • 1 0
While Red Bull does seem a bit overzealous with their marketing from time to time, they do put on some pretty kick ass events!! gotta hand it to them, they're an awesome positive "non-bike company" sponsor of the sport.
