I thought it was on board cam… then I remember UCI rules

Let's take minute of silence for all those who died or got paralyzed in traffic accidents on the way to the shop to buy a helmet camera.
  • 60 1
You can tell Greg really kept his stamina for those bogged down pedal sections and kept really low on the jumps - the spot where everyone was doing tear offs was exactly where he pushed it on the pedals and got the win - Awesome race - Congrats to Greg Minaar on an amazing victory!
  • 15 1
"where everyone was doing tear offs was exactly where he pushed it" .... yup, truly elite level determination, focus and discipline...little things...separates those on the box from the rest every time
  • 7 1
Lol. My shop sells cameras mail order. If only someone could have told all those poor buggers that, we wouldn't be in this mess now!
  • 9 4
That won't stop helmet camera related injuries and deaths @gabriel-mission9 ... most of them happen off the bike.
  • 34 1
Well in that case the UCI should ban racing WITHOUT a camera. Otherwise there will be loads of cameras lying around in the pits with nothing better to do than jump out on unsuspecting members of the audience. We have to chain them to the display case at the shop. I assume this is why.
  • 10 2
Seriously UCI...think about how regulations can help the sport and not hinder it. If they want to grow cycling, and make it more awesome for spectating they need to take advantage of the technology that has surfaced in the last couple years. A camera with a live feed unit as a REQUIREMENT would be fantastic. Sponsors would love it as well. Think of the possibilities from broadcast standpoint!!! Just sayin'

 Camera's on all show ponies.

Yeah, I wanna see them doing sections like "the Notch" in Moab, this course was not hard enough..
  • 27 1
^Okay Josh Bender, why don't you show us how it's done?
  • 6 1
That was a sick run. Major kudos to Minnaar for staying relevant and ripping! Super motivating!
  • 2 1
@WAKIdesigns , most accidents i know of happen when people drool over pinkbike videos while driving. I say UCI should ban filming and screening of cycling sport events. Because honestly, how can you expect us to take responsibility over ourselves.
  • 2 1
A 32 year old man died in a car accident last night in South Essex. A husband and a father of 3, was driving with his beloved German Shepherd "Nancy" who survived the accident initially but passed away in the Ambulance which was driving it to Wellspan Hospital in York. Autopsy of the ever faithful animal estimated the cause of death to be the exponential bleeding in Sigmoid Colon. Onlookers have witnessed that driver was using a smart phone while driving, just before the accident. Further investigation showed that he was reading UCI website. We at The Guardian Angel wish to remind you that accidents don't just happen, something triggers them.

 Dark Waki. Real dark.
  • 4 0
 Went from 0-100 real quick.

JbalColgate is right. I could ride this course with both butt cheeks tied behind my back and a lefty fork with 110mm spacing. Where I ride this course would be the beginner "learn to ride" area. I should be sponsored for racing cuz i'd beat everyone.

OK I'm done being an idiot. This course is so freakin gnarly!!!! These guys are so insanely fast and I give them my upmost respect. I could never even come close to those guys in skill and guts. Minnaar seems like such an awesome dude and he deserves the win and the tie with Peaty for the record. Hopefully he'll continue to kill it and take that spot.
  • 2 0
You have to tie your arse cheeks up to keep them behind your back?
  • 2 0
 you dont?
  • 1 0
No? Have I been doing it wrong all this time? I always wondered what the point in those kidney belts some people ride in was.
  • 48 1
good to hear to Warner get wound up during Minnaar's run
  • 7 2
the problem with the commentary being so ''calm'' and ''boring'' most of the time is mainly because the commentary box is at the finish arena and rob & claudio can hear if a rider is up or not, so there is no tension at all.... With all the riders they hear from outside if the rider is up or down before the footage is shown on their monitors...
  • 6 1
Even I could hear that watching the stream, it was quite annoying!
  • 54 1
Claudio should be reporting the race while following the riders down the track Big Grin

@HutchJR You are wrong, just look how it looks previously with Cunny www.youtube.com/watch?v=ziTgxl4Vg6A

Not one, "Look at the time!!!" though. Slightly disappointed.
  • 12 3
@rockyflowtbay He said "Look at the time!" right after Minaar crossed the line.

The thing about the commentary is, that Red Bull "teached" Warner how to commentate professionally about a tv broadcast like that. On the Freecasterstreams he was going nuts, because it the people watching were "hardcore fans". But after Redbull.tv made the DH-Broadcasts "famous", Warner has to commentate calm and tell the "big mass" of viewers whats going on. I don't like that too and I hope Red Bull let's Warner go a little bit rowdy again!

*And also: Claudio is an awesome dude an I really love his course previews, but I guess they should get someone else to do the commentary because his English (like mine) is not soooo good.

**And why did we only get to see the Top 20 men!?
  • 13 3
He's just a pro now. His commentating is better than ever -- informed, fluid, entertaining -- even if it is sober.
  • 8 1
Claudio dont need good english to make legendary comments rbo.. although his previews are waay better than his fills-in during the runs...
  • 4 2
@beast-from-the-east That's what I tried to say. He got a good commentator, but the tension is almost gone...
  • 4 2
My bad.....must have blacked out for a sec... Also I dont think it has to do with Claudios english, look at CG. I just dont think those two have the best chemistry.
  • 1 1
DHMF- That seems to be the case and I'm guessing they're sticking to this format of only showing a few riders... they did the same thing with Lourdes. I'm not sure if this time around it was due to the weather delay.
  • 1 1
Actually the Freecaster Footage is better especially covering the top section and of course the commentary. Also watching all riders was way more entertaining to groove you in. Yes they had streaming capacity problems but other than that...
  • 2 0
Speaking of sober... did they cancel Rob´s dirty business?
I agree that the commentating is more 'professional' than ever - but it has lost much of its charm to be honest.
Maybe it's me or maybe it's because half of the top athletes is out or at least not performing at their best because of injury, but, I'm just not feeling it this season.
Also, it seems as if Warner was squeezed in a straitjacket with a gun to his head to appear as sincere as possible... no jokes, no taking sides with anyone (like when peaty won world champs).
RedBull accomplished the impossible once again... they tamed Rob Warner.
  • 1 0
If you listen to other corporate content of red bull you know why...

I will tell my grand kids that I witnessed Minnaar win his 17th world cup race!
  • 26 1

Why do they even have to post the winners name on the front page at all?? WTF is with the idea that *everybody* can watch the race when they want to? !#$@!#$%%@#$%!#@$%^%$#!@ SPOILERS !!!
  • 17 1
lots of respect for these guys (and girls). I have a hard time riding downhill for long without getting wore out... and these people keep it pegged for over 4 minutes.
my race review would say 'Klassen nearly finished last but he got his tongue wrapped in his spokes. no word from the ER as of yet'
  • 2 1
 hahaha...nice one
  • 2 1
nearly last? I'd be dfl. In the women's category.
  • 2 1
Nearly last, but DNF due to tongue in spoke situation he means. Tough way to go out for sure.
  • 12 1
for whatever reason I wasn't the biggest Loic fan (probably my 26 y.o. self not yet coming to terms with 21 year-olds and younger being the new elite), but seeing him give such huge props to Greg on a legendary win has changed my mind. Loic and Greg, both class acts in the best sport ever
  • 12 1
 wait til you're 40. lol.

  • 14 1
did he adjust his brake lever seconds before dropping in?
  • 8 1
yep, how is he so calm ill never know
  • 3 1
 haha yep
  • 4 0
@BikeBlood at that moment I thought, "ok, Minaar is not even entirely ready for this"... Then Minaar smoked Gwin by over a second. Our sport is divine.
  • 6 1
Claudio said, he took lines that nobody else took. That little cheat code over the grass was so nice.
  • 4 1
He did that jump to perfection.
  • 8 1
 no 23....Air Minnaar
  • 5 3
Sacre bleu, he clipped a tape pole with his bar, thus by UCI rule, he is technically off course and will be retroactively DQ'd!!!

The sad part about the above statement, if the UCI ruled that way I wouldn't be terribly surprised - especially after the well deserved "not a trade team" pokes Greg and SCB gave the UCI post race. Smile

Anyway, big ups to Greg Winnaar for tying the legendary Steve Peat for the most WC wins and continuing to be an absolute force on the WC circuit. Hell, based on his 2nd place finish at Leogang last year (with a race run bobble no less), he could pull off back to back wins and actually pass Peat next week. Will be a tall order given how well Loic has raced that course, to say nothing of Gwin or the other usual top step threats, but as Warner said - never...ever...rule this man out.
  • 2 1
What does it mean to be "not a trade team"?
  • 2 1
Due to the riders having different kits the UCI deem them not a team. It means that they cannot be considered for the team overall title and also lose privileges with their site locations at the various WCs. On the whole not much changes because people mostly follow the individual wins/overall.
  • 2 1
@SHEESHKAH They lost "Trade Team" status because the UCI determined that their uniforms lacked a cohesive design, that pulled them all together as a team. So, now they don't get good parking and space in the pit area, don't get to register for the races as a team, and miss out on some other small perks. Lame, but whatever. It doesn't probably have a huge effect on the day to day operations of the team, but they are all pretty annoyed about it (Santa Cruz made an entire billboard advertising the fact they lost Trade Team status in protest).
  • 2 0
I loved Greg's post race interview. "Yeah, not bad for not-a-trade-team" had my coffee coming out my nose.
  • 6 1
Claudio couldn't follow him all day even if he wanted to
  • 5 1
The sound doesn't do it justice........the roar from the crowd was pretty AMAZING!! well done Greg!
  • 3 1
I wasn't expecting Minaar to win this weekend, but i wasn't surprised. I think he knows more than anyone where to take it a bit steady/safe and where to push on. Great racing.
  • 1 1
I wish they would have shown more of the top section of Greg's run. It seemed to me that we saw less of the top section on Greg's run than the other riders. I was also surprised that Warner and Claudio seemed unphased by Greg being up at the first split. Then at the second split when Greg was still up Warner got excited as if it was new information.
  • 3 1
@madmon my comment was to the user moaning about a ruined replay after coming on Pinkbike!
  • 4 1
Such a run so shortly after surgery, this man is legendary!
  • 4 1
is the Syndicate a trade team? haha in your face UCI
  • 2 0
Just superb - get goosebumps watching that clip. Hoping Greg stays injury free and in the hot seat this season...
  • 3 1
Is the brake lever of his front brake on the right side...?
  • 3 1
Yes, it is common in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, and of course in South Africa. I don't know why, maybe because it's the same arranging as on motorcycles.
  • 3 1
It is called "moto" style, setup like the front brake on a motorcycle (right hand). I ride street motorcycles and have never had trouble with my motorcycle having the brake lever on the opposite side as my mountain bike. I like to use my strong hand for the brake I use the most, which is rear for MTB and front for street bike.
  • 11 1
It's because we drive on the left. So you can pull the back brake and signal right
  • 3 1
Saw it live! What an amazing moment, everyone went crazy
  • 1 1
im a downhiller but i have never understood the 'live' bits. On a run like minaar, how come they go for 5:47 but on tv its like 2 minutes? is this the off camera sections???
  • 1 1
They dont start in 6 min intervals - its much less (3 or 4 mins or so). So in live stream the start and top parts of course is replay, then it jumps to live for mid and bottom (I guess).
  • 7 4
 I think he won
  • 3 2
The caption spoilt it when i just had some time to watch the replay.. too bad
