Turbine R rim by Margus Riga
  R is for Rally

With Race Face being a company of mountain bikers, when we set out to create a new aggressive trail / Enduro wheelset, our goal was simple – “Make the wheel we want to ride.” The Turbine R wheelset is product of an exhaustive process of design and testing, finding the optimal balance between a number of touchstone features we deemed the most important in a modern all-mountain wheelset. With the Turbine R we feel we have raised the bar for a true performance wheelset suited for today’s versatile trail and enduro mountain taming machines.

The Godfather of Freeride puts the Turbine R wheels through a true North Shore test session.

The features and advantages that the new Turbine R wheels offer riders is expansive; a few highlights:
• 30mm Inner diameter width of the Turbine R rim gives the rider a firm footprint resulting in increased traction. The wider rim also improves tire profile and tire sidewall stiffness for a more comfortable, confidence-inspiring ride.
• The tubeless ready Turbine R rim, manufactured from super tough and lightweight 6069 aluminum, features an asymmetric design for more balanced spoke tension and improved strength, durability and longevity.
• The biggest advantage of the new Turbine wheel lies at its heart – the all new Vault hub. An oversized hub body with large oversized flanges offer an improved bracing angle, while large cartridge bearings are positioned in a wide stance for longevity. Vault features ultra fast engagement with its 60 tooth drive ring and 6 double tooth pawls (3 engage at a time) to provide an incredible 120 points of engagement @ 3 degrees. The hub is available in standard and boost spacing and with tool free end caps for all axle standards.

Don’t just take our word for it though; here are the first impressions of the new wheelset from team riders Wade and Rémy after testing on the demanding trails of Vancouver’s infamous North Shore.

bigquotesI'm impressed with the performance of the new Race Face Turbine R wheel. Since about 1986 I've been working wheels over and have tried all the different combinations of spokes, lacing techniques and rim widths as well as shredding 26", 27.5 and 29er wheel sizes. I would say I know a thing or two about wheels. The 28 spoke Turbine R surprised me with stiffness and durability; after shreddin' hard with Metailler the wheel showed no signs of fatigue and was arrow straight. Also, having the confidence of the Vault hub and its amazing 3 degrees of engagement, could mean the return of the huck to flat classic 'Wheelie Drop,' or not...haha! - Wade Simmons

bigquotesFirst ride on the Turbine R was a success. Straight away I noticed the hub engagement and how smooth it was. Also the wider rim (30mm) gives a bit of wider feel on the tire and increased contact with the ground meaning added grip. Now let's talk about the music... Love that sound of the hub! - Remy Metailler

"No frenchy free ride lines on the shore, this isn't the bike park" best line ever! but Rémy keep up those creative lines in the park.
  • 9 3
I was actually thinking, "Wait, this isn't the bike park." Then Wade said that! haha
  • 12 1
Where does this french line thing come from? I thought it came up after Fabien Barel cut corners at some Enduro race, or is this term older?
  • 41 26
That wade guy is pretty funny! Not a bad rider for being washed up!

@kerberos: I think the french line is literally jumping over every single trail feature. I'm guessing you've seen Remy's whistler edit where he jumps the rock gardens in whole and does that 100ft. long triple.

@Sharonb: People obviously don't get the Ride To the Hill reference. :-)
  • 9 1
@eric-w: thought that might happen, but those who know, know Wink

@Sharonb: oh shit ride to the hills my absolute favorite
  • 2 2
someone could have easily fired up photoshop and airbrushed that lil side-lip vibe for a brotha - it's on blast right on the front page... just sayin, you know what Im sayin...
  • 2 0
@kerberos: It comes from the original enduro race format in France where taping was reduced to the minimum (e.g block the wrong path) and to gain precious seconds riders started cutting all corners, plowing straight instead of stake all the small switchbacks etc... Just what Fab Barrel did at Crankworx Les Gets!

 @Sharonb: Funny - Yes - Washed up??? f*ck no - Guys a LEGEND!!!

Another Secco gem! You've got to be sniper to ride the Shore. That tire-tap on the fallen tree would end my season (if I had a season).

@endlessblockades Stoked you liked it! The Shore is honestly so crazy in person, video doesn't really do these guys justice. They're animals!

Scott is the man! If I see his name associated with any edit, I know it'll be top notch, guaranteed.

@scottsecco: After riding those trails many times over the years . They make some serious steep bits look flat .
Props for another great video , and props to Wade and Remy .

So they're advertising a wheelset, where's the hub sound?
  • 41 2
@Almuerzo: Some people like quiet hubs.
  • 5 2
@Clarkeh: yeah for sure ! but I wasnt expecting such a low sound with a 6 double clicks' ratchet-pawl !!
  • 6 1
@RedBurn: pack enough freehub grease into a hub and you can make any hub quiet.
  • 3 0
@Almuerzo: I have plenty of left over hub noise from my E13 hubs if they need it.

Wade has been my favorite rider since I was thirteen. My first bike was even the 1999 Rocky Mountain Pipeline in purple and green just like the one he rode in the early Kranked videos.
  • 8 0
With all the skidding down trails I do, why hasn't anyone sponsored me?
  • 8 1
Wade's riding inspires me. What bike was he on btw?
  • 3 1
He rides a Rocky Mountain Altitude 770MSL with custom specs.
  • 2 0
very nice add, sick lines but hey wade whats up with that plus sized bike which was dumbing down the shore? Isnt that good to ride it in this vid? muhahahaha
Whatever I like plus sized bikes but i think wade would chose a 'normal' of his own free will
  • 6 0
 so beautiful shore
  • 3 2
They better be a lot better than the last turbine wheelset. They are double the price. The turbines I have now have never held air very well and they burp really easy. Plus bearing were shot after a year of light riding on a back up bike. It would take more than a couple pro's riding them to get me to spend money on a raceface wheelset again.

I'd like to see how the tire profile looks on a 30mm internal width rim. Makes me wonder if rims that wide start to have negative effects compared with a more conservative 25mm one. My guess is weight due to the extra material, and maybe even having too much traction for pedaling (meaning more resistance to overcome).
  • 5 1
That fallen tree...I'd end up with it up me...

brilliant ! semenuk would have nose bonked it haha

@dirtnapped: probably no one if the tree went down recently ! I can imagine that it s not originally part of the trail, due to hazard
  • 2 0
Not Sure how many more times I may need to watch this throughout the rest of the day.... kuz I'm still dreaming in slow motion on how each one of those lines looked!!! ;+p

Nice to see the Godfather in action. Also nice to see differences in lines taken @1:07
  • 4 2
Hey Remy. I'm the godfather so just do as I do and you'll be fine whipper snapper...

Wade choosing a non plus tyre to have fun on the trail, that seals the deal on No To Plus tyres for me.
  • 2 0
So if I buy these wheels, it can make my ride like these guys in the video?
  • 2 0
notice the tire bumps. wades tires pumped up much firmer than remy. he told me he's always run high pressures.
  • 2 0
is dat how u shud pronounce remy's name?

Nice Vid and the wheels hit all the current check points for man wheels.

Be nice if RaceFace could find me a replacement preload ring for my cinch cranks.
????
  • 5 2
Just have your local shop contact our warranty department and they will get that sorted for you!
  • 5 3
 @raceface: Why no 26"?
  • 2 1
@raceface: tried that plus a whole lot more. you're welcome to contact me direct for the whole story
  • 3 1
@raceface: that preload ring is a reason why I wouldn't buy a cinch crankset again!
everyone I knew trashed it on the first installation... yeah we could have warned each other...
30€ is way too much for that crappy plastic ring. please upgrade to aluminium or something that works...
  • 2 0
@jzPV: it was aluminum on the first cranks. People over torqued them and broke them. Is it really that hard to only tighten it till the gap closes?
  • 1 0
@SCLuke: it breaks before. even without noticeable resistance. my new one has at least a 1mm gap and the plastic already shows signs of too much tension where the screw is. then the preload ring loosens and the bearing covering on the drive side opens with a gap and dirt gets in the bearing. they already run a little rough after one year, without pressure washes!
  • 1 0
@jzPV: I had trouble with mine too; was aluminum, its a poorly designed crankset and BB it lasted a week.
I returned it. I've used RF cranks for years. No more. Also zero customer service.
  • 2 0
@SteveDekker: i have two sets of RF cinch cranks. in fairness, they have worked ok. i agree that 2mm hex head is delicate. the damage came from my bb that backed out (even thought i torqued it to spec). the bb was not RF and was replaced under warranty. in short: the product is great. i just cant get any replacement parts.

It would be nice if RF would reply to either my LBS or reply to my many emails i sent direct.
  • 2 1
after a second watch, i'd have to upgrade the vid from "nice" to awesome.

Good to see Remy not hucking and overshooting jumps for once. I was wondering if he is able to land normal jumps
  • 2 1
Why is it I want to buy RaceFace products all of a sudden? Wow, that was an enjoyable start to Monday!
  • 2 3
Imagine if they'd let Remy ride out first, he would've been at the bottom with an espresso and a croissant by the time wade finished. Also, carbon rovals are damn near the same price FWIW.

I think guys like Wade who have put so much effort into the scene and riding here are able to go wherever they want and film. Still don't like the use of unsanctioned trails in commercial vids without at least asking permission from the builders. Wade has put his time in and helped build this place from the ground up; most builders are honoured to have him ride their stuff. Doesn't change the principle in my view.

Race Face makes genius products but anything (AHEMaviCOUGHCOUGH) with straight pull spokes can f*** right off. Unless they plan on making the spokes cheap and readily available there is no way I'm investing in wheels that will take me off the trail for more than a day.
  • 1 0
@m47h13u: I have the classic I9 hubs (regular J-bend spokes) and rim of my choice. Totally dig them...solid. I agree with you, the straight-pull proprietary spokes are not worth the hassle.
  • 1 0
@m47h13u: The wheels use the same spoke length for the entire wheelset and come with 5 extra spokes just in case.
