Waki-Leaks' Down-Duro Conversion Kit

Jun 24, 2016
by Troll Troll
Back in 2008 Downhill Racing was probably the most vividly growing genre of MTB. We could finally watch our sport on live stream thanks to Freetoaster TV. Sam Phill was the king, dominating the racing scene on flat pedals and Bob Warmer was still allowing himself to burp and pee in the commentator's booth. In this post huck-to-flat era, owning a DH bike was something to be proud of, it was the best weapon of choice to dominate rocky (technical) terrain and send any jump. Simply put, the Cool Aid used to have Downhill flavor.

Waki-Leaks DOWN-DURO conversion kit
  Converted Socialized Emo

But those days are gone, we have God-only-knows (or Richard Dawkins only knows) how many hub standards and wheel sizes, nearly each brand sells a full carbon frame. COOL AID business shifted to those weird small bikes that used to be ridden in bike parks by people in full body armor and Meth Para helmets. I-only-ride-park mentality has further deteriorated the authority of gravity heroes (as if that wasn't the case all along before Matt Denison made his masterpiece video) So... you may want to have one of them super capable 6" bikes now. The problem is that they cost a fortune while you have a perfectly working, stout Downhill bike from the flat pedal days. You have a bike that has almost no resale value on the second-hand market. Selling a DH bike from 2010 won't even buy you a 6" Enduro fork or a metric large volume air shock. You may buy a decent 2012 DH bike on the Buy&Sell, take a flight to a bike park and leave it there to rust - it will still be cheaper than renting a modern one for a week.

Despair NOT, though! Enter DOWN-DURO - a start-up company that allows you to keep your fantastic machine, stay trendy and keep up with friends that probably betrayed you. After all, Enduro bikes of today have geometries even more radical than your old trusted DH bike. They too can handle the technical terrain. Down-duro sells Enduro conversion kits for 26" DH rigs like the Socialized Emo, the Comical DH-Supreme or the Copper Horse Saturday. The kit includes:

1. Headtube enhancer:
Making your reach super cool (read: longer) and head angle even better for technical terrain (read slacker).

2. Lock-out kit:
For the shock that will come in 3 different options to fit Faux DHX 3-5.0, Marz-foxchi Rockon, and all Manatee Singers

3. Down-Duropper:
A dropper post with a negative setback, steepening a relatively slack seat angle of a DH bike to extremely effective 74 degrees or more.

4. 47-tooth Cassette Expander
A kit that does not violate any newly filed patent because it works ONLY with 8 or 9-speed drivetrains.

Waki-Leaks DOWN-DURO conversion kit
  Waki-Leaks DOWN-DURO conversion kit

Down-duro conversion kit
DOWN-DURO lockout kit for non-metric shocks

All this comes at an interesting price point of $899 which seems like a lot, definitely, but is nowhere close to buying an SLX level Enduro bike. Of course, you may need to buy a new cassette and medium cage rear mech for climbing, which will set you back for another $100 or so. Climb up and ride down that technical terrain. Down-duro also recommends a tightening strap to be fastened on the lower crown of the fork and the arch of the lower leg assembly for climbing. You compress the fork while your friend tightens the strap for you. You cannot do that on a single crown fork. It will make your fork harder and lower the travel - simple but very effective. The whole kit adds about 4 pounds to the weight of the bike, but since you have 3-pound tyres on your bike, that won't do too much, will it. Especially on technical terrain.

So fear NOT, your 26" DH bike can be cool again! You can be a bro again. Since when were 6 inches better than 8 inches on technical terrain?

Arguably yours,

I'm the kinda guy who knows enduro or am would be about a 1000 times better option for my terrain but damn, nothing compares to the look and feel of a true downhill bike. And that double crown kashima goodness turns heads Wink . I guess enduuuro could have a kashima dropper now though, better than nothing.

That conversion kit is epic, though it wouldn't lighten my 40 lbs DH bike a bit, lol.

Overall, a fun read.

Enduro has has the Kashima 36s. Head turners, for people who like shiny things. Marzs coffee in my opinion looks better. Not to mention the black of boxxers uppers. I'd say for anyone who likes flashy forks, just go with rockshox domains.
  • 4 2
@hucktoflannel: jokes aside I can say one thing about Enduro racing. Go, show up on a training day, ride all the tracks for a whole day, with all the climbs and then show up next day ready to race. I assure you that 90% of people who show up on DH races as tough seasoned racers, are almost dead on after the climb to the first stage, come the race day. Yes Enduro jokes are fun, I make them myself, but I am slowly growing some horns for DH community. There is not enough jokes about downhillers, I must start hitting closer to home... Big Grin

Happy destroying the trails - Cheers!
  • 3 2
How about a thing nobody is allowed to complain on; two guys kissing with neck braces on and their fullface helmets pulled up to the top of their heads. Subtitle: "Feeling pumped after a day at the park, share the stoke with your best friend". It's just a picture of two homosexuals who happen to do downhill mountain biking. Nothing to see here.
  • 3 1
@WAKIdesigns: The only reason there's no jokes about DH racers is that we are by far the most serious bikers out there. There's not one person with a downhill bike who doesn't take what they do extremely seriously because it's the seriousest form of mountain biking. (This was said in total seriousness and should be taken very seriously. seriously)
  • 3 2
@hucktoflannel: don't forget that Downhill is the only discpiline of MTB where bikes still use 20mm axles. Oh I got started... I want to make drawings... Like a chest cam of an arriving Cleveland steamer...
  • 1 0
@WAKIdesigns: could there be a downduro kit that ads a few inches to the chainstay, making a 26" bike become 27.5" or 29". I would order a downduro kit if it gave me a better head angle, my current ones a bit too slack :p (This comment is being said with complete seriousness, because downhillers take this sport VERY seriously)

Anyone?

@randybadger: Yeah it is a bit of a stretch. Tho snooker has an element of endurance (especially when I play).
  • 1 0
For me watching other people do sports is an exercise in endurance... no matter how good they are, I just can't stand such form of onanism. And if I feel like doing it (like DH World Cup) I also prefer to be alone. I do not appreciate some dude next to me going: did you see that?! Soccer of all is the worst. 11 men strong party composed of metrosexuals and men from poor neighborhoods who haven't yet become ones yet, are running around failing to score a goal. Yes, I know what some think, it is a process of seeing how it happens. Well, when I watch porn, I am interested in getting entertained with the fun bit, I do not want to see the guy meeting the girl for the first time and dating her, sending messages, buying flowers. I don't.

  • 3 0
This is classic, I've actually done something similar with my 2010 Glory, threw faux air 36 floating kamikazes on, swapped the DHX Arsey hoar to something Vividly clair, a stealth bomber seatpost, and 1x11 (32 with 10-44) Sharknado ST/ XavieR drive bits. Lastly squeezed in 27.5 carbon hoops (to the Envy of my mates) and went tubeless on some Maxxed out rubber I think ver highly of due two their great rolling ability. From hence forth she is know as, Gloriegn, amen.

Another quality tongue in cheek view of our sport. Thanks for reminding us the best thing to laugh at is ourselves. Well done!
  • 3 0
Im actually a fan of the concept here....instead of trashing, re-use... Even though its a joke, it has merrit...

Could do this and send em off to those south that dont have bikes at all...or use them for newbs to learn on instead of trashing a 5000$ rig that dad bought because they have the money.
  • 3 1
I have already done something similar to my DH bike for those pedally bits that connect some sections on Cypress. 28 tooth chainring, 11-36 cassette, reverb post. At 64 degrees it is already slack enough. My Marzocchi fork is even 650b compatible. My friend went one step further and ran a 42 tooth cassette. Thinking of throwing on an X2 so I have the lockout. Only issue is the slack seat angle.
  • 2 0
If you're not too worried about how stupid it looks you can actually fit some oldschool 25mm setback posts backwards. Only issue being the result is just as handsome as Wakis drawings...
  • 1 0
Ditto on my DH bike. 160mm Van 36s with 32f 11-36 cassette. Head angle is now 65 degrees or so. Rear is quite progressive so kinda works. I can steepen my seat angle but TT is too short to do that but chain stays are relatively long. I realise @WAKIdesigns article was complete satire but with the right frame it can work if you're on a budget.
  • 1 0
I like old down hill bikes on the cheap ! But wouldn't want to climb a bunch with any form of satirical hybrid contraption. We are currently having a blast hucking around a $350 dinosaur down hill craigslist purchase . My 1800$ "all mountain , 1x, trail bike " is just as fun and bit more flexable , but solar to fun ratio has to the retired down hil/free ride tank.

At first I started reading this like it was a serious article. I very quickly realized it was a joke. I was like WTF is this "headtube enhancer" that is some dangerous trash.... Ohhhhh hahaha. I mean it could work if the piece was made of titanium but of course then it would add an extra 30lbs to the bike. Good times... LOL
  • 6 1
Satire was so March 2004 but you draw pretty pictures.
  • 1 0
when I heard about the 7 8 or 9 speed cassette expander I was like I want that! The dropper could work on old cross country bikes that are slack as well! I have passed on so many DH and slope style bikes because they just don't go up.
  • 2 1
Ironically I am doing a custom bike for one of my customers.
He's got a Scott Gambler frame and we're building it up as a 27.5" bike.
Custom drop outs being made for the rear.
Only has a 44mm head tube so having to use a Cane Creek lower cup to fit the tapered fork as all 650b SC forks are tapered.
If it all works well then may look at selling the drop outs.
  • 3 1
Isn't it cheaper to buy a 650B YT? Big Grin
  • 1 1
@WAKIdesigns: Nope not at all the guy is a retired engineer who know what wants and we have designed the new dropouts and have the prototype dropouts being made now.
The frame was a very good condition second hand item and being 26" wheel and out of vogue not that expensive any more. We deal in high quality second hand parts so the build isn't going to cost the earth + He managed to get a very nice set of 650B Rockshox forks for £75 off eBay.....Bargin!!!!
So a second hand YT cheaper.....No I don't think so!
  • 3 1
@GTruckus83: 650B Boxxers for 75 quid?! That sounds like fisherman's story even before the BREXIT Big Grin
  • 1 0

@WAKIdesigns the down-Duropper is my fave dude, feel like you should be offering more offset and preferably in 46/ 51mm designs to properly address the overly slack nature of dh bikes seat tubes.
