What is the Sexiest AM/FR/Enduro Hardtail of 2016 - Pinkbike Forum

Dec 31, 2016
by James Morris
On The Sexiest AM/FR/Enduro Hardtail thread we decided to have a poll to decide what has been the sexiest bike of 2016. Over the last week, candidates have rolled in and the most-nominated bikes short listed. Twelve bikes were clearly leading the pack, so I eliminated the rest (as well as last year's winner) and seeded the splatter-painted Swarf into the final to unsure that standards are kept high.

So, in no particular order, here are the nominees (be sure to vote for your favorite in the poll below):

crying shame theres was no honzo in the mix up!!

The Honzo is already an icon. Doesn't need this title. Big Grin

Awesome to see the Project12 Cycleworks among all these other sexy hardtails. The guy built the frame himself in his own shed! Sure, it might not be the prettiest (the BTR beats it imho), but the fact that he built it with his own hands over 'just' buying a frame is worth a vote Wink
  • 3 3
it's really beautifful. I can't belive what you've written. No way that beauty would been built w/o serious machines (& stuff alike) Big Grin

That would explain why my google search for "Where to buy Project12 Cycleworks" came up with nothing

The details are what sets it apart from the rest, gets my vote this year tup

Swarf and BTR are both made by men in sheds too. Had to vote for the Swarf, saw one at Bespoked this year and the finnish is beyond lovely.

I didn't know the guy was building the frame in his shop! I'm glad i voted for him!

I would have seen the Last LastForward there w/out problem !
  • 2 1
Ditto. The fast forward gets my vote.
  • 9 5
But none of us voted for the Last enough to get it into the final 12, so it doesn't deserve to be there. Rules is rules.

Love this article, some of these I've never heard of. Helps when Looking at additional options when buying. Does not the Canfield EPO fit in this category??? Project 12 niiiice.

@mgolder: you got neg propped for that lol f*cking idiots, that's what happens when you release it to the masses

@Will4X is spilling hate over the deedar.
  • 9 10
And this is why this post getting to the front page is ruining the vote. People thinking only an expensive bike is what can be sexy.
  • 14 3
@mgolder: Think you'll find I've followed this thread from the start, if you are willing to go through the nearly 3000 pages you'll see.

Referring back to the original post and I quote...

'It really has to be really desirable to the hardtail connoisseur'
'Posting meh bikes, arguing, taking the thread off topic will see you added to that ban list.'

I just find it hard that an On One with a very average build would ever be considered 'really desirable to the hardtail connoisseur' I'd personally call it a meh bike...the thread is about exceptional bikes not run of the mill, I see bikes like all the time I'm out.

My bad!
  • 4 3
@silverfish1974: if so that's completely the wrong reason for it being entered, anyway his brown bike was far better.

@thenotoriousmic: not hating just IMO not in line with the thread...please read opening post...

 @pigman65: Absolutly!!

@Will4X: you still riding the blender dude?
  • 4 2
 @Will4X: Hey Will!

Think in thread we tend to consider a lot of factors, from price, to durability, to geo. The deedar is pretty rad as it wasn't a huge overpriced bike build, rather thought out with smart part choices that Sterling had access to. In essence, that's what the thread is. We all seek after the hyper bikes with carbon and ano drippings, but at the end of the day, most of are riding everyday bikes, and people want to share what they think is the best final bike, with all things considered.

All in all, the deedar looks fun as f*ck, and that rates very highly to us. It's actually hella desirable to most of us, hence getting voted in. Cheers though!
  • 2 0
@thenotoriousmic: I do still have the Blender, now built up exclusively as a play bike for 4x/Pumptrack and playing about.

I managed to pick up a Stanton Slackline Ti 18 months ago so tend to use it for trail duties although I do have a FS for the rougher rides.

How on earth is the Canfield EPO not on this list? It blows these other bikes away in the looks department.
  • 17 1
Because this was a user generated list from the sexiest hardtail thread. The bikes in the poll were the most nominated in the thread. I'm kind of bummed it made it to the front page to be honest. It was kind of an annual thing amongst a smaller group of PB users that engage in sharing and discussion of aggro hardtails. No offense to you, but now we have people that don't care about hardtails complaining about a process that they weren't a part of. Sorry - Rant over.
  • 4 1
Or the Yelli for that matter.
  • 1 0
@browntown40: I care about hardtails...I mean, I have them and ride them. Either way, the EPO is the sexiest hardtail ever. It's not even debatable.
  • 1 0
@MD-dh-rider: Sorry, Wasn't calling you out in particular, just replying to your comment on why certain bikes aren't in the poll. Of course it's debatable, but I'm not going to debate it - the EPO is a great bike. There are some amazing bikes in the thread that this poll originated from that might change your mind.

Vendetta gets my vote! Awesome bike, ridden by an awesome guy, designed by an awesome dude in Copenhagen.
  • 2 0
I should remember that name. I used to think if I have the money for a titanium hardtail, it was going to be Stanton. But now it suddenly changed to Kingdom Vendetta. I love the geometry and I love the raw finish.
  • 3 0
Anyone doubting the speed and cool-ness of hardtails should definitely watch BTR's World fastest hardtail video. It's one of the reasons bikes like the ones up for this vote are so loved by the regular readers of the Sexiest AM/FR/Enduro Hardtail thread. When it comes down to it anyone can read the forum, so I don't see why people are annoyed anyone can vote. Just vote what you think looks cool, they're all amazing looking bikes, I'd like to own one of each!
  • 2 0
That video is ridiculously good, damn!
  • 10 8
I have been riding a Shan 27 custom build for about a year now, and it is just such a phenomenal balance of the low and slack geometry that makes trail/enduro bikes fun, while still pedaling and accelerating like a rocket. I commend the designers on that sucker, because It has actually turned me off completely to riding a full suspension trail/enduro bike, it feels just as capable in the rough as any 6" bike I have experience with, without the drawbacks of having to push more suspension up the climbs.

I would really love to try some of these other slack hardtail offerings and see how they compare!
  • 43 15
Sure bud. Your hardtail is just as capable in the rough as a full suspension.
You know how I know your full of shit?

smack some satns flow on them bitches and you got a bulletproof bike
  • 21 0
I loved using my hardtail this year and at times it feels very capable with 29" wheels and big forks even when its rough, that is until you realise how much more quickly a FS can take rougher sections and how little traction under braking you have on the rear with a HT, especially if its a bumpy corner entry.

No point in comparing the two directly really, both fun, both in different ways, just like different wheel sizes.
  • 18 3
@jflb: it's as capable, not as fast
  • 3 0
I have a ROS 9 and i feel similarly. I mean its clearly not on par with a FS, but its comfortable and capable on pretty much anything but legit DH, and has the benefits of a HT to boot. My issue is cracking frames. Ive had two break in the past 3 years, and its making me wonder if their capability has been pushed past their strength tolerance...or maybe its just me.
  • 3 0
@FullLotus: might be time to get a more suitable frame, sounds like you ride too hard for a lightweight frame. Get a BTR and solve your problem.
  • 1 0
@Racer951: Yeah maybe. Is the ROS considered a light duty frame? I was gonna pull the trigger on a FS to add to my arsenal instead.
  • 2 0
 @NotDannyHart: exactly
  • 15 0
Anyone saying a slack hardtail is as capable as a 160 mm bike is just delusional. Used to ride a Honzo with 140mm Pikes, Minions and high bars and in the rough it didn't even come close to my Capra. It feels like you're riding at WC pace but this is just perception. In a way this is part of a hardtail's appeal - having the sensation of going mach nuts without the risks that come with it.. I still think riding a hardtail or short travel fully on more moderate trails is a blast by the way.
  • 11 1
@bonkywonky: I mean im not making hard statements about hard tails being better or worse for everything. However certain trails ARE going to be better for certain bikes. I have lots of strava data for 3 of my bikes on the same trail networks, and my hard tails have better times on almost all the trails. (even very rough ones)

Its not like you buy a 160 FS and you just go faster. It doesnt work like that.

FS bikes are great, and I want to own one again soon, but they both have their strengths and weaknesses, so does every individual rider. You need to find what works for you and the trails you ride.

flag thenotoriousmic (Dec 31, 2016 at 3:04) (Below Threshold)
Hardtail's are better than full sus at everything apart from one thing so it's entirely possible that your going faster on your hardtail.
  • 3 0
@FullLotus: not a light duty frame, just a Niner.
  • 3 0
@ReformedRoadie: are niners known to be fragile? What do you mean? Honest question.
  • 3 0
@jdb06: You might not be riding rough enough trails, then. I had Stan's Flow rims on a full suspension bike, sent a water bar on a local downhill run, and landed hard enough to dent the rim despite using tubes at 30+ psi.

If I had done that shit on a hardtail the rear wheel would likely have squared off right then and there like my old Bontrager rims did.
  • 4 0
@FullLotus: There was a point where about half of the riders I knew on Niners were breaking frames...all HT, to my knowledge. Seems like as riders moved more to FS, they were opting for other brands, or switching to 27.5.
While all brands see some percent of frame failures, it seemed disproportionately high.
  • 3 0
@FullLotus: In my riding group Niners have a reputation for cracking frames. I heard one guy bought a brand new frame and it cracked on his first ride.

Having said that I just cracked the chainstays on my Gary Fisher (post Trek buy-out) and another guy in the group had the same bike with the same crack.

Moral of the story: Frames crack, I guess.
  • 1 0
@FullLotus: I'm gonna get me a 200mm FS frame and go even faster.
  • 3 6
 @thenotoriousmic: At what, mountainbiking?

@FullLotus IMO hardtails are only suited for play riding. I'd pick a fully (with the approriate amount of travel, mind you) for anything else. Who wants a bike that steepens and tilts forward when in the rough? How useful is it to have a controlled front end when the back of the bike is bucking all over the place?
  • 3 2
@bonkywonky: They pedal better, jump better, climb better, handle better, more responsive. Basically better than fs at everything apart from ploughing through the rough so really there's no reason to be surprised if you go faster on a ht than you do on a fs if the conditions suit.
  • 1 0
@FullLotus: well said, I just bought a kona process 153 dl and building now, so I really want to see my times compared to my 160mm ht.
  • 2 8
flag bonkywonky (Jan 1, 2017 at 2:54) (Below Threshold)
@thenotoriousmic: "If the conditions suit"- if you mean pancake flat trail centre stuff then they are undoubtedly faster and more fun but that's not what I see as 'real' mountainbiking. Anything involving rocks, roots and holes would be a pain to ride at speed on one of those boneshakers.

Now neg rep this post into oblivion as well, I know you all can do it.
  • 1 2
 @bonkywonky: I didn't say that. You're making uneducated assumptions.
  • 2 3
@thenotoriousmic: care to tell me in what conditions they would excel then? And while you're at it you might also explain why there has yet to be anyone entering the EWS or WC DH on a hardtail..
  • 2 1
@bonkywonky: come on mate you're being ridiculous I'm obviously not talking about EWS / World Cup downhill. I'm talking trail riding say orange p7 vs orange 5 if I really have to spell it out for you. There's going to times where it's going to be advantageous to be on p7 over the five or vice-versa. For example tight steep technical dh the p7 is going to excel faster more open dh the five is going to excel. What I'm saying is don't underestimate the hardtail because they are very good at certain things so I stand by my claim that I'm the right situations you can go faster on a hardtail.
  • 1 0
@thenotoriousmic: maybe uphill? ive never owned a fs but i would expect i could be a lot faster on a fs, as it is im reaching speeds enough to satisfy my thrill seeking. if anything a hardtail excels at providing bang for buck as it does require more effort and control to ride a hardtail smoothly in techy roots rocks jumps etc. but that is the whole point of an AM/FR hardtail its like a wild beast being put to work beyond its intended purpose.
  • 2 0
@a-d-e think about it properly though. On a hardtail even if you are going slower through a rough section you can get the power down so effectively on a hardtail that you can gain that time back. Full suss have nowhere near the acceleration that a hardtail has plus you can hop so much easier on a hardtail that you can avoid a lot of the stuff where you'd lose out to a full suspension. You get more boost of transitions, more pump not to mention every bit of energy you put through the cranks is coming out of the back wheel. Your not fighting the suspension at all so you can side hop out of a bad line no problem where you'd be forced to commit to it on a fs. Where fs shine is on the trails where there isn't a good line but that stuff is loads of fun to ride on a hardtail anyway so what's the problem. These days I only ever ride my hardtail or my downhill bike I get bored riding these mid travel full suspension bikes but that's just me.
  • 4 0
@bonkywonky: people have done the EWS on hardtails, I tried to enter a round of an EWS with my only bike being a hardtail and I'll enter again this year. I did rode everything on the Emerald Enduro already so I don't see why not. Hardtails will slow you down, but if you're going to be slow you might as well do it in style Pimp
  • 1 0
@thenotoriousmic: erm well yes like you say going slower but then putting the power down = more effort?. anyhow i completely agree which is why i choose to ride a hardtail. your preaching to the choir. i feel i would lose that direct connected experience by running squish at the rear.
  • 1 0
 @NotDannyHart: with you entirely
  • 1 0
@thenotoriousmic: 'Getting the power down' on a hard tail on anything other than smooth trail is extremely difficult. No traction = no power. Ive really enjoyed riding my hard tail recently but I think you are being overly optimistic.
  • 1 0
@joshdodd: I have absolutely no problem mate. What you struggling with?

So many sexy HTs on the list, and many more on the sexy forum thread. I was really torn between the Twoface Chromag (such an original and well executed idea), Lefty Stanton (I voted for it last year I think) and the Shan GT.

Looking at the bike as a whole, everything on the Shan meshes perfectly with the rest. It also has that sports car appeal, which I guess speaks to the little boy inside all of us.

I own an AM HT and it's been all I hoped it would be. I don't race, I'm not race fit and the bike is not the right tool for any king of competition, but it can go up or down anything given a bit of technique and reasonable fitness is there.

Glad to see there are so many people sharing the love for such machines. Happy new year to all!

@Scotj009:id agree! the bfe may not have what is now refurred to as "extreme geometry" but it is easily as capable as any of these bikes and its more simple than for example the on one or the stylus. in my opinion hardtails should be simple, basic and pure. none of this crossmember strength bullshit.****ehem btr**** my cotic has hit everything in the alps and has held up fine. I don't think you can improve on this, its a hardtail its not meant to be a scientific masterpiece in my opinion, i think companies are trying to make something something else when its not necessary because it is already perfected.

No singlespeeds or gearbox bikes in the list?
  • 5 4
 Why should there be?
  • 2 0
Having only ridden a BTR ranger, (a friend owns one) that gets my vote.
  • 1 0
I'd like to see HT versions of DS DH bikes. Eg an Intense M16 HT or Santa Cruz V10 HT
  • 1 0
Sexiest I've seen all year is the Devinci Darwin Comp. Beautiful and light. That's my vote.
  • 2 0
Viral with Pinion and Gates drive or any of above ...

The PVD should just go all in and mount a banana seat to literally sit directly over the rear axle.
  • 2 0
is all of them an option?
  • 2 1
 Can never have to many

Hey Pinkbike, where are the breadwinners?
  • 5 0
Join the forum, vote for one and post one and then maybe next year there will be one... it's a user generated list out of many... hence no breadwinner Smile
  • 1 0
theres a breadwinner with enve in my personal top 10 fucxing sexy as...
  • 1 0
For me, it was the BTR or the Shan...I really love the Shan but couldn't vote for it because of tire/rim/stem alignment

 My wife doesn't understand...
  • 1 1
To me hardtails only look good with medium size frames, with the seatstay and top-tube more or less in line. The xl frames usually look like a gate.
  • 3 2
No Ragley or NS??? Bad list is bad. Top 3 has to be

1st. Ragley Blue Pig
2nd. Production Privee Shan GT
3rd. NS Eccentric
  • 1 1
But what about my bike? I put so much effort into choosing the perfect colours for maximum sex.

I think one of them deserves a place in final.

 ns surge evo too europe?
  • 2 0
the ns surge evo has one of the most beautiful head tubes. integrated tapered head tubes are the most beautiful ever! shame they only come in extremely orange or snot green
  • 2 0
Love the look of that bike! I wondered how it could be forgotten. Thinking of buying one now, in fact. I'm from the glorious USA and I don't know anyone else who rides an NS, but I love mine.
  • 2 0
i have one. i recommend it! its not horrible to ride for long distances (and i have an overly long stem and a horrible seat) with a travel adjust fork and then blasts when you point it down a hill with the fork longer
  • 1 0
@jordanneedsafork: I was a little worried the seat tube was too short for a dropper to get proper height for pedaling. What do you think?
  • 2 0
personally i feel i built the surge to end all surges. was surprised it received a couple nominations last year didn't make the final shortlist.so few slots so many rad bikes
  • 2 0
im not rich enough for a dropper but it has a port for internal routed droppers so droppers where in mind when designed. depends how high you want the seat i guess, i run my post as high as it can go when not descending.
  • 1 0
@a-d-e: Man that is a nice Surge! What dropper is that and how much travel did you go for on the fork and dropper post?
  • 2 0
oh man that does look good. i got a bright orange one -.- mine is nowhere near beautiful. mismatched brakes, zee drive D:

What about DMR?
What about Ragley?
  • 7 8
Dartmoor Primal is beatiful. Almost bought it. But the NS Clash on black friday happened...
  • 4 7
 What about them?

Nobody voted for those bikes enough to get through to the final vote of 12. Pretty simple.

@mgolder: yes what about them. Most of the bikes above are just a banal design, few straight tubes welded together. Only a hipster could appreciate 8 almost identically looking bikes. Even I can design a sexier bike.
  • 2 0
@WAKIdesigns: Honestly the PVD is pretty impressive if you look at it closely. Brings some great transferable attributes to the table: www.peterverdone.com/pink-five
  • 4 1
Bought a deedar frame and sent it straight back, piss poor quality. Went for ns. Happy.
  • 2 3
@Kramz: yes that one is very nice. It has good proportions.

@Earthmotherfu - NS Clash. Ugly as hell. Wanted Dartmoor Primal 275 but NS costed 1,5k less. Then considered Ragley mmbop, absoluet beauty in my eyes., but too much BB drop to run 26" wheels and I didn't want to buy new wheelset and new fork. And it has 12mm thru which would not work with Charriot mount, so I wouldn't be able to use it for taking my kids to the day are.
  • 2 1
@WAKIdesigns: but it appreciates you and rides nice Smile
  • 3 0
@WAKIdesigns: not telling you what ns I went for..so don't bother asking you miserable c*** lol
  • 5 0
@WAKIdesigns: go on then put your money where you mouth is design and build a bike that works as well as these banal designs.
  • 5 5
@WAKIdesigns: You really are a jumped up tosspot. I know I love an argument but you, you are an especially unjustifiably arrogant type of prick.

Design your bike..... Happy to wait for it and then tell you 'no, it's not as sexy as you think you smug arsehole'.
  • 2 3
@Earthmotherfu: Had an ns.... Rear axle was a piece of shit. My deedar is perfect quality wise. Horses for courses isn't it.
  • 2 0
@mgolder: Wont happen he's too busy trying to knock people that have achieved something with their blood sweat and tears.
  • 2 0
@mgolder: well no not really for me. I've owned a parkwood that was crap,a first gen inbred which was as heavy as a boat anchor and then the deedar (had the finish of scaffolding pipe),a codeine that when you coughed all the paint fell off. On one do fill a gap in the market, that's for sure.
  • 1 2
@Earthmotherfu: that's why I said horses for courses. Mine is great. No worse on the build than any of the other bikes ive had. To be honest its better than a couple of them and less than half the price. Some of the stuff some companies try to pass off as worth several hundred to a grand for a frame is frightening at times.
  • 1 0
@mgolder: perhaps, maybe. I only speak of bikes I've owned or own. only just built ns eccentric and if it's good/garbage, I'll let everyone know.
Nowadays I've zero brand loyalty.
  • 1 0
@WAKIdesigns: You are overseas, so it may be cost prohibitve, but robertaxleproject.com got my 142x12 bikes going with the kid trailers.
  • 6 8
@chappers998: go fk yourself. I have a job that I like and that I'm good at and I grind myself on. Hard work sweat and tears - did you take it from Linkin Park lyrics you emo twat?

Did I hurt ya Bri'-esh pride? I'm surrey, I didn' know tha i' ma'-ers so much to ya. Am gunna be be'-a in the fu'-cha. Don' be so Sensi'-ev. Take a running fock a' a rollin donut

And the hardtail of my own design is in my album. I sold it already, my workmate rides it.

Suck my troll sack.
  • 4 1
@WAKIdesigns: Wow. You sold one frame to a friend. That qualifies it as much sexier than any of the 12 bikes that were already whittled down from hundreds in the forum thread before the poll could even be made of the final selection.
  • 1 0
So...the big question is, how much was the WAKI trail frame - design to product?
  • 2 0
@WAKIdesigns: hilarious great way to back out, just proves you've haven't got the minerals to back up your fat mouth. Whats having a job to do with it I'm sure many of the builders you knocked held down two jobs.
Seen the bike you referred to, Hilarious that you would criticise other designers when thats all you could come up with. I'm sat here pissing myself, if anyone wants a laugh page 12 of his Photos.

A real man has to be good at something. Otherwise he is not worth anything. Don't let the void get ya. The meaning of life the secret of existeeeence lies in the hardtail. Booooyaaa

@WAKIdesigns: Is that all you've got in retort, I feel sorry for you, You must be so bitter ????. Best get back to your sad little world.
  • 1 4
@chappers998: i am super happy and I laugh at you. I don't argue with you because there is no way we can have an intelligent discussion about aesthetics. I just poke you like a stupid, messed up kid takes a stick pokes a dog behind the fence. I smile because I no longer have to endure the pain of adolescence, insecurity, trying to impress everybody with nothing, no sex or shtty sex. The worst is trying hard to believe in some stupid, made up societal values you read about on Facebook.

I leave you now. You are no longer interesting and I feel like douche for engaging in online sht throwing with a piss pot
  • 1 1
@chappers998: Christ, that wouldn't be winning the poll against any of the 12 that made it through to the final. Looks more like a supermarket special from an aesthetic point of view really. Like someone trying to ape a nice design they saw elsewhere.
  • 1 3
@mgolder: why do you use high school banter?
  • 2 0
@WAKIdesigns: Great reply. I mean, not that you resorted to anything vaguely childish in your replies to chappers . . .

" I just poke you like a stupid, messed up kid takes a stick pokes a dog behind the fence. Yeah waki, you really have no basis for telling someone they are using high school banter do you. Nice try though.

Maybe if I said your bike looks like it is made out of a piss pot that would have been more your level, as you really do like using that term to insult others, but then you get all angry and pissy when called out on it.

Also, it wasn't even high school banter. They were my legitimate thoughts on your frame.
  • 1 3
@mgolder: I had tens thousands of discussions of all kinds with all sorts of people and rarely hear such butthurt opinion on anything. I sit next to a rather good furniture designer, his opinion is 16 tons more relevant to me than yours. I heard way too many compliments on it. So you can stuff it up your up tight arse. Especially since you own an On-one frame which is so cheap in every single way of looking at it, that It makes me think of Red Alp and go, hmm not that bad really. I think I want to buy an Ellsworth. People like you two make me want to stand on the top of the head of the high horse you put me on in the first place with the bollocks coming out of your mouth. This whole ranting has been caused by two butthurt fanbois who couldn't deal with an opinion of a troll on the internet. Go to Scotland, they may teach you some sense of humoUr and distance. Ooooh my God someone doesn't like me bike ooooooh

I'm getting out of this cesspit and wish I could drop 16 tons on it. Or release the tiger. My hovercraft is full of eels. I have to fix it.
  • 1 0
@Earthmotherfu: awe that sucks... I have had issues with my blue pig, surge and other players alignment of different bits...the DeeDar has been the first out of box no issue frame I have had. Impecable quality...On the production line there's bound to be a stinker. Sorry you got one.
  • 2 0
@WAKIdesigns: Thank you I really need the laugh I'm sorry my comments have struck such a raw nerve I didn't realise they were so close to the truth.
I especially like the way you tried to deflect the focus from your bitter comments to personal attack on me, but hey that's fine if it makes you feel better about yourself i've wide shoulders and as I have little to no respect for your opinions makes no difference to me.
All the best.
  • 1 0
@mgolder: No reminds me of a cheap rip off of the Privee with what looks like QR dropouts, very advanced design.

I thought the waki trail was quite handsome in all honesty, I mean I love building things but going from a sketch to a finished article is beyond me and perhaps many other pb'rs. Had a Shan of hazard, another company who can't seem to get their paint to adhere to metal for any given length of time.
