Woman Arrested For Setting Traps On Trail

Article Source: Global News - BC

Two mountain bikers, who use the North Vancouver trails regularly, took it upon themselves last December to purchase, install and monitor security cameras in the hopes of catching someone who was intentionally setting up barricades on the trails.

Between Aug. 1 and Dec. 29, 2014, the bikers noticed obstructions on the trails, which at times, were dangerous for them and other bikers.

A 64-year-old woman has now been criminally charged for allegedly setting up logs and rocks on the biking trails, with the intention to obstruct mountain bikers. She was caught numerous times on the hidden cameras, appearing to intentionally lay logs, branches and rocks on the Quarry and Lower Skull trails.

North Vancouver RCMP arrested the woman on Sunday, Jan. 4 at 5 a.m. at the head of the Quarry Trail.

She has been released with conditions to not attend or go near any of the biking trails tampered with. Police are requesting criminal charges for setting a trap and mischief to property.

These are serious charges – these are public trails and one should not interfere with the lawful enjoyment of the trails and set up traps or obstacles to potentially endanger the lives of people using them, said Cpl. Richard De Jong, spokesperson for the North Vancouver RCMP.

Fortunately no one was seriously hurt or injured in these incidents and the accused is set to appear in court on Feb. 4.

It's frustrating because this happens all the time at my (legal) local riding spot. People lying tree branches and logs accross trails. It's a pain in the arse and could cause serious injury. There have been reports of 'cheese wire' traps strapped between trees too. But the police are too busy with other shizzle

As community service as part of her sentence she should have to help dig a bike trail just to rub it in.

We had someone doing this on our trails. Was riding alone one day and caught him doing it on my Gopro. Once more riders showed we gave him a little "verbal disapproval".... He hasn't shown his face since.

i wonder how she would feel if the first kid that got hurt by those traps just happened to be her grandson
  • 5 3
The obvious solution is for one of our North Vancouver homies to step up to the plate, marry this (and I use the term very loosely) lady's (grand)son or (grand)daughter and give her a litter of (great)grandchildren to keep her busy and off the trails.

Presumably, she wouldn't even want to sabotage the trails if her own flesh and blood were riding them.

It could be the cats thing as well. Why do people like cats?

Someone tied cheese wire across trees at head height on my local trails in the UK once, thankfully someone spotted it before anyone got injured... Had to check the trails top to bottom every time after that though.
  • 6 2
BryanBobo- I missed the part where you showed your disapproval. It more looked like you were awkward and didn't say anything and let him ramble on with his BS. If he's placing traps on your trails, friggen scare him off with sticks/rocks. You shook his hand... ugh. well at least he hasn't showed up again.

I've got a friend who got caught by fishing wire across a trail , the guys got scars in the corners of his mouth now about 15mm long.

i have nightmares about someone stringing up 80lb test braid across a trail. its usually green in color which makes it even harder to spot, let alone flying at 20 mph down a trail. it probably wouldnt cut your head off but i bet it would go pretty deep before it threw you off the back of the bike.

This actually happened to me. Someone put a big pile of rocks about half way down a down ramp of a drop. I ride this trail 4-6 times a week regularly. I was out for a quick run on my way to an appointment, when low and behold! Rock pile, Big Rocks. Broken pelvis, Hip dislocated, Acetabulum Shattered, L1-L3 fractured, Dislocated shoulder and no more D3 either. It was a bad day. All because someone put rocks on a jump. This was back in august 2014. Doctors have told me i might be able to ride again around September 2015. And thats when ill be able to get back to work also. its majorly affected my life and the quality of life long term. These people seem the think its a joke, like a prank they don't realise the consequences of crashing in out sport. But at least I'm still walking now, Took 3 months though.

a fun trail of mine has been pretty much barricaded to death by hikers, they line up huge rocks, it diverts the flow of water... kinda, but its mostly for the mountain bikers, they're so big that bunny hops are necessary, except i'd have to be WC good to bunny hop into some of the sections that they precede. its killed the whole trails flow. and these are probably 100-150 pound rocks they're putting in the way. its ridiculous. its not safe and there is no reason for it.

This is an example of the dedication of mountain bikers to make the world a better place. Yes there are evil people of all ages that wish to force the way they think and act. This old woman is evil. She wanted to hurt people! Riders took thiere own money to buy game cameras, set them up at early morning, check the cameras change the batteries ect. Cameras and batteries are not cheap! The time and expense needed was extensive. This did not get resolved over night. I am proud of these dedicated individuals that went to such great effort to stop the crazy bitch from causing any more damage or worse hurting a mountain biker. Mountain bikers are awesome! Thank you!
  • 11 0
Agreed! Thx to these riders!! This has been happening to this part of Fromme for years. Has always pissed me off. I would remove the obstacles any time I saw them, only to see them obsessively replaced the next day. Will be great to see it stop. Sick person.

To the Lower Mainland Mountain Bike community:
I am pleased that this woman has (allegedly) acted so childishly, selfishly & dangerously. And that she got caught doing it. She has done more than we ever could to lower the public credibility of anti-mountain bikers & make them look silly.

Where she has acted childishly, selfishly & dangerously. The mountain bikers have united & organized to maintain & improve the trails in the community for everyone. Two of our peers have spent countless hours patiently gathering information so that she could be brought to justice, legally.

If / When her name is released on Feb 4th, DO NOT ruin the work of everyone above by stooping to her level.
If eggs are thrown, threats are leveled & rude acts are made towards her, it will only serve to justify her actions in "their" minds and confirm to "them" that mountain bikers are hooligans. We are not.

When her name is released, make sure it is spread far and wide so that all of the city, including her colleagues, friends & family know how selfish and dangerously she acted. But do it with class.

Stay classy. We are better than she is.

We also had the surrey wildlife trust demolish our local jumps and put logs in concealed areas so that you go to ride a drop that you've done for years and come face to face with a f*ck off log, crashing over the bars.
The reason they did it? All in the name of safety of course!

This has been going on forever. Thing is Fromme was clear cut 100 years ago and as far as forests go it's a mess. Except for the trees it feels like a dead zone. Yet these clowns still try to block trails thinking the mountain is for hikers only. Hope they throw the book at her.

I've seen plenty of branches laid across the Skull and Dirt Diggler trails in the past but just hopped over them. However, I just realised I might have been one of her victims. I cant say for sure as it was all a bit of a blur, but last July I had a really messy crash on the steepest pitch Diggler after my front wheel was knocked off line by a diagonal branch or root. I was lucky to get away with just a dislocated and badly messed up shoulder and I'm still recovering not. I fell a long way and landed on dirt, but it could have been so much worse if I'd hit one of the trees which line the trail. I suspect she has a lot of cats and I hope they all shit on her carpet.

i live in France and on one of my favorite trail, someone seems to have fun putting logs and rocks on it! Also, sometimes, elderly people that i come across while riding literally hate me, insulting me very hard (last time an old man insulted me but he was whispering..i heard it and asked him to repeat it louder : i am not that type of guy who is gonna do nothing so we began to insult each others for nothing… probably not a very good reaction from me but others don't work, trust me i tried them before..
still don't know why they hate us mountain bikers so much..
fortunately there are still good people in the forests starring at us riding on our spots, asking us questions..

Glad this is getting attention - as it should! I've had barb wire wrapped logs, rocks, and plain old logs put across the trails I ride. Crap like this can result in serious injury. Kudos to the riders who made the effort to catch the nut case in the act! So evil to intentionally injure other people and very cowardly to do it in the manner they do.
  • 10 1
64 year old woman and moving logs? In Poland there are obstacles everywhere and very often. It is better to keep fingers on levers and check each jump feature before using. Sharp glass and metal trash is most common. Wooden features are often stolen for keeping fire. The worst thing to experience is a tiny steel cable between tress. Like an invisible force knocking a rider down. There are no hidden cameras, but I would not like to be caught on setting obstavles like that. Other riders would beat me up seriously, or leave things like this near my house. So what would the woman do, if she found her "inventions" just next to her driveway? This is not a civilised method, but police is not working that effectively here.

heh.. mad world. here in Hungary if you try to build a trail, your act is considered as crime, so if THEY catch you, you are the one, who's gonna go to jail. well, ofc the situation is not that harsh, but people still can't imagine that mountainbikers are not shielded terrorist against mother nature. however if you are a hunter, or a logger, it's totally okay to drive your sad old soviet GAZ, NIVA, whatev' vehicle in the woods. i should be a footballer maybe. football is okay. and i could have fancydancy hair, and cute diamondlike earrings. i'd love dat.

I read a very interesting article some time ago in BIKE Magazine about these situations and the pros and cons of taking matters into your own hands. It covered a specific case that took place somewhere just north of San Francisco. Apparently an individual became known for years of harassment, trap setting, and in some cases physical attacks on passing cyclist. He was known to purposely cause collisions between him and cyclists passing by. Some riders chose to defend themselves at times and got into physical tussles with him. After many years and a specific attack supposedly involving a hand wielded weapon of some sort,a slew of charges were brought against him and a long court battle ensued. In the end he was banned from the area but no further charges were upheld that I recall. I remember his quoted response to the trial made him sound completely insane and undeterred. Its blows my mind at the kinds of vendettas people can develop. Be careful if you ever encounter these type of people.

I was riding a few years back with a few mates down a trail we cut out and built up and has been a trail for about 12 years now. Then a bunch of chavs kicked the lips off the jumps and lobbed logs and rocks at us as we rode down. Bent my mech hanger, went to the police and they did f*ck all about it.

haha in Northern California the riders get arrested for riding on the trails. Some crazy people like this lady were putting metal rods in the trails to flatten bikers tires and/or hurt the rider but nothing happened to them even though the community brought it up. Man i need to move to BC...

  • 1 0
yah man the North Shore is so sweet. I just don't understand, how can public dirt be illegal? I was riding a trail once (that might have not been 'legal' as they call the trails in Marin, and some crazy old dude pointed his hiking pole at my neck (it's okay though because I was like 15ft+ away from him) and started shouting swear words and telling us that we were gonna die to my friend and I. We just apologized and said that there wasn't any sign or notice saying that we couldn't ride there, which there wasn't. He then decided to take a picture of us (luckily with our full face helmets on, but still) and said that he's gonna tell the 'officials'. We told him we didn't give him the right to photograph us and he just kept yelling at us, and I don't think he deleted it. I bet these people laid the obstructions that we found on the trail not even two weeks later.
  • 4 0
There are plenty of trails in my area that are hiker access only. It makes sense that there should be bike only trails. Hikers + bikes don't mix. When I see a hiker on a technical single track I think "would you f*ck off to some of your hike only trails".

Like many I've had close calls on Cypress and Grouse. Never injured though. I've been mountain biking for so many years now and this has been ongoing. Most of the trails are purpose built by mountain bikers. Hikers don't get that. What would be interesting is if this bitch gets a judge who rides or is somehow connected to riding. Which is quite likely. Still tho. A slap on the wrist. Even better if they judge gives her community hours specific to a north shore trail building group. I'd love to volunteer to work with her! I've got some tips for her...Like places she can go... Things she can eat... Give her some fun nicknames...it would be grrrreat!

International problem! We always have to walk our trail here just south of Santiago, in Chile, because some f**king livestock herder has it in for us. He has dismantled several of the landings of our jumps. About a year ago, we had already made our ascent and found the trail in good condition. When we approached the end, he or one of his dumbass partners had drawn a massive prickly acacia tree across the trail just around a flying corner. Obviously, we weren`t prepared. I looked like a Swiss cheese! Some people just never get it. Lesson: walk your trail because life is too precious.

Its hard having a 3 million dollar waterfront property and have mountain bikers enjoy the forest 6 kilometers from your house. It just takes one of them to be a little crazier than the rest to start setting traps to catch those reckless bikers.

I bet she's got some big arms? Must work out, being able to move rocks?! But seriously, potentially fatal or at least very dangerous to all that use trails there, and around the world. It's not like Canada's a small place (I know I've been), surely she's got other places to walk or whatever she does, probably going slowly mad bless her. STAY OFF THE TRAILS WOMAN!!.

I've come to the realization that no matter what activity you pursue, someone is against it, regardless of how politically uncontroversial you think it is. There are groups actively rallying, in some form or another, against most activities. I believe, the reality is, we live in a selfish society and many people think that activities they don't understand or that offer up even a minor inconvenience for them, must be shut down. Sure there are some that are politically sensitive for a lot of reasons, but they are relatively few and many activities that shouldn't be, are. I've just gotten used to people trying to shut down or restrict activities I participate in.

Reminds me of the time our local trails were vandalized. someone setup fishing line across a few trails and some of the lines even had fishing hooks on them. crazy ol bastards.

l remember this…no arrest ever made. sheriff dept talked to a "person of interest" and the traps stopped.
  • 1 1
I think we should all just get along, those trsils are for everyone, not just bkiers Maybe thelsdy wss hurt by a biker at sometime, who knows some of those bikers can be verry aggressive,, whatever the case, the authorities should be out thrre catching real criminals, rather than waste taxpayers money on petty things. We all have to share this earth, lets just get along, she's afraid of court, iam sure she won't be doing that again

Our local trails have never been sabotaged like this, but I remember the days when lycra-clad douchebags used to put log piles on trails because they thought it was fun to have zero flow on trails.
