When my doctor told me that my tootsie was getting better and it was the right time to start rehabilitating it on bike, I got the chance to help my friend Michal make his dream come true.

Michal Kosík had been an active rider until he sustained a severe injury. Since then he has been wheelchair-bound and wheels have become an inseparable part of his life. It took plenty of time to develop and produce his four-wheeled bike and now he is able to get to the slopes again. Unfortunately, he can´t make it without a cable car or other people´s assistance. His dream was to stand on a slope, face to face with freeride trails again. As an active rider, I was glad that we could make it happen. It is also worth mentioning it wouldn´t have been possible without Vectra foundation and WeLoveCycling.com.

Checking the terrain on Google Earth.

It looks awesome over there/Draix area.

I revised my plans and changed them a little bit. We got the ZAM team together, packed and loaded the van and hit the road. The destination we had chosen was unknown for all of us. The name of a small French town was Archail. The place where dark dusty mountains loomed behind green trees which looked like scattered throughout the area. Local people were incredibly friendly and willing to help and give advice. We were told the best way to get to the hills so that we could save some energy. However we had to push the four-wheeled bike uphill anyway, which made this experience more valuable because it was all about a pure freeride in the wilderness.

Itˈs easier to watch and check the terrain out through binoculars.

Helpful French ladies are showing us the best way up for Michal.

When Michal canˈt see what is beyond the horizon, there is only one solution. Friendsˈ backs!

Definitely not a piece of cake to push Michalˈs four-wheeled bike up the hill.

After the first testing day we decided to prepare the longest freeride trail for Michal. Mission accomplished! Michalˈs trembling hands and voice made me realize that this was gonna be a 100% freeride experience for him. He went downhill for the first time and I could see an incredible joy in his eyes. At that moment I knew his dream just came true. The whole team knew that we managed to do everything we wanted. We left with some unforgettable experiences.

The first test ride on the black surface.

Michal mustered the courage to drift.

zam fo u r wheels foto by Jan Kasl
Only three wheels touch the ground on this kind of surface.

zam fo u r wheels foto by Jan Kasl
However, it was all about the way he took off, sometimes he needed only two wheels.

There is a wide asphalt road narrowing with every turning.

zam fo u r wheels foto by Jan Kasl
Itˈs necessary to make some trails more suitable for Michal to prevent him from falling down to a chasm.

Marty who is behind the camera is curious about Michalˈs experiences.

After the rain we struggled with a sticky soil, it was almost impossible to ride on it.

Five members of our team were involved in pushing Michalˈs bike up the hill.

Pumpinˈ up and checkinˈ tyre pressure at the top of the mountain where the longest trail starts.

Michal always followed Gaspi so that he didnˈt turn aside, itˈs very difficult to see the horizon if you sit 1,6 ft above ground.

Two riders - three track.

Michal is on top of the world, adrenaline is rushing through his veins and his dream just came true.

Team ZAM / Vectra and Merge Productions / We Love Cycling.

None of us can imagine what physically handicapped people must go through. None of us realizes that one second can change our lives. We fully grasped this concept a few days after our arrival. Aleš, a member of our team and Michalˈs helper during the journey, had a motorbike accident and surgeons had to amputate his leg.

Thanks to all of you all who care about other people!

By team ,zam and Richard Gasperotti.

I think 4 wheeled bikes is the field where electric motor should be applied.

 How interesting!

Being a robotics engineer I think this will be my next project!

yeah, quite troublesome to make your ride buddies push you up and taxed up 70% of their energy.
  • 46 2
@chyu I hope you didn't mean "troublesome". I feel like 99% of the people would be more than willing to carry their buddy to the top of a hill without being concerned about how "taxing" it is. Sounds like you're a selfish riding buddy...

agree on this, with all the efforts on electronic mountain bikes this days, how about some love on electric powered quad mountain bikes.

Oh Gee! This is my positive props highest score ever. I knew I was a genius from time to time. @Nimble9 Please make sure to show it to me, or consult doubts, if you happen to have any. I would be happy if I could help.

I'd exhaust 100% of my energy if it was one of my mates

Might as well give them a 4wheeler or a small dune buggy that is capabable of carrying somebody with a disability.

@MDRipper. The points are to stay self-sufficient and green. I have all against electric motors in normal bikes and all for four wheeled ebikes.

Epic video and a inspiration for all riders that are having a handicap, never give up your dreams.

Super cool and how cool are his buds for hauling him up there!?!

i saw some of these riders in whistler and it is truly incredible!

Aint no such thing as handicaps in this case, just a person who use different equipment to shred Wink

That was awesome and what a ballsy dude... so much less control than a two wheeler. Reminds me of Stacy Kohut and more importantly, Trevair. I'm hoping to see more of this down the road. His first time out he's already drifting and catching air off natural features, just imagine what he can do with more time out there. What an insane looking area also.

 Friends. Good to have around.

Yeah, definitely. I am recovering from L5/S1 disc injury (3 months so far and not healed yet) right now and I feel really bummed for not being able to ride my bike... and in times like this, friends help a lot.

I'm happy for this guy!!! Sure that ride meant a lot for him!!!

Here in the forest of dean our local bike park, the pedalabikeaway, are making a purpose built track for these guys in their 4 wheelers! I think they are planning an uplift service too which means they can ride all day long with no pushing like everyone else! Cannot wait to see them shredding it!

Michal - mad props for getting back in the saddle.

And seriously - what a solid group of friends/support group you have - good on them too...

my deepest respect for that! keep on shredding!

If anyone says one bad thing about these guys or their bikes I'm going to personally climb through the internet and punch you in the face. So awesome! Tears practically.

There's one thing more that keeps me thinking. I know something about servicing cars and something about maintaining bikes. In my opinion 4 wheels bikes should have wheels alligned with precision.
  • 2 0
Is it just me or does anyone else think the geometry needs improving?
it seems like the front should be risen somehow to keep a better center of gravity, or the bigger wheels should be in the front?
  • 1 0
The issue is that you cannot pop well while sitting down and since your weight is towards the back, you get bucked off quick lip jumps... or in this case completely natural features. You can hit big drops and big jumps, its just a matter of finding the right ones to hit. Who knows though, I aint no rocket scientists.

and now, who cares about the wheel size?
  • 1 0
I have a good friend in a wheelchair and every time I look at his wheelset I dream about lacing hope pros to some Mavic rims riding on minions, that would be so cool! Probably not very efficient, but definitely would turn some heads.

 Awesome on every level!

This shows that biking isnt about what you ride or how you ride. Its about that feeling we all have when we ride. Shred for life!!
  • 2 0
Why does the 4-wheeled bike have smaller front wheels? Does it help handling, or is it a kind of technical requirement to tie the whole bike together?
  • 2 0
Without doubt more attention should be drawn to this... biking industry drop other werid stuff like fat bikes and focus on this please ;-)

Get this in the Olympics!! Super admiration for this sport If my dream of running a bike park ever comes true I'm gonna make sure there's suitable runs an maybe even a championship event

Poor guy that 4 wheeler is just not practical. Someone gotta design something to get these guys back on 2 wheel. Maybe something like the mono skier thing.
  • 1 0
It may be not practical but it got the job done. I cringed when I saw him endo though.
