I think we have found the winner in the "most niche" catagory. A motor assist downhill bike with a central pannier for commuting. Perfect for the busy executive who lives on the top of the mountain and who wants to wants to commute to the office which happens to be at the bottom of the mountain.
I must say though that looks like a replaceable headtube, which would be pretty cool if you were able to swap headtube diameters around on your frame.
Hello folks I'm the owner/builder of this frame/electric machine. I think Mike has not been correct to post this picture in the rage against the electric bikes Post.... It does not pretend to be classified as a MTB and it is a unique piece, made with lot of efforts to show how an extreme interpretation of an electric hybrid bike could be. The bike is made in Italy by OnionBikes and is an old MP5 prototype, 2 pieces made, the final MP5 "series" run has been of 10 pcs with many differences from this one, and some have been re-branded as Merkaat. The electric conversion is based on a 7500rpm motor capable of 5-6 Hp continuously and 10-11Hp for 60secs bursts....Most of the electric parts are engineered In North America by ShumakerTechnologies, AstroFlight, CastleCreation, And GrinTechnologies, and assembled/tuned with the support of the Endless-Sphere forum. The Whole Bike is 25-30Kg depending on wheels/tires and range. During the show it was 27 with 20Km dirt use range and heavy wheels. The Pack has a coiled cable so that you can use it inside a solid and firm backpack or a modified camel-bag, for less weight on the bike. (so this means the bike is 22). The whole kit is adaptable to many bikes (solid DH or reinforced frames) and typically adds 8Kg, that's not so much for that power. Driving this Old Bike, mounted with components almost all of the same years as the frame, as an unofficial independent personal bike, has been a true fun, during the EUROBIKE show. Cheers
Don't worry, if the battery dies on you mid-ride it can be pedalled......for about 12 feet. Actually, props to whomever built this, it is sheer basement genius/madness.
