multiple people were given medals and then had them taken away and my friend had just been given third and then they were like oh sorry nevermind and gave it to someone else so ya dude i was pissed

Seems legit. I'm friends with one of the timing people, and they said the computer jumbled up all the categories. Times were right, categories scrambled... I'd be pissed too!
