yeah --- digging down into the dirt vs just hauling dirt into place (maybe covering logs in place and what not) is sooo much better.
I made a 30 foot berm at our trail hauling dirt that we dug from another spot, covering logs we lined up in place -- it was at least 20 full wheel barrels of dirt, a bunch of digging and one hell of a lot of time spend --- almost all the dirt we dug is washed away now and there's not much left of it (just the logs). since then, if I want to build a berm, I dig down into the earth where I want to be --- it's less work and the berm actually gets better as time goes on.
yeah -- here in VA, there's a bit of rock to wrestle with digging something like that --- all different sizes small and HuGe... roots aren't too bad, I find those to kinda soft when they're not near a large tree.
