Do not trust carbon handlebars. On this impact to a tree, with the rider already fallen off the bike, you wouldn't face this problem, if you had aluminum. aluminum flexes. Carbon flexes catastrophically...

Just maybe it was torqued more than 6 nm. That scores the bars to make them snap clean. Just like this pic.
