a little strap going across the vertical piece would be a good idea for keeping the bikes snug.

i considered making that one but 1) it doesnt hold the bikes in place and 2) i like the look of wood more than PVC.

no because the rack is snug with the back part of the bed of the truck so the bikes never slide back....

Yeah the wheels rest within in inch of the bed wall, and the vertical supports are further than that from the derailleurs
