C'mon, its not seriously like the guys gonna be hitting 20ft doubles with the kid on board- think most giving neg' props jest got the wrong end of the stick. As for jolting his head... surely the dad+suspension will be absorbing the hits, very little will transfer to the baby. Even in the event of a crash - the dad would react so as to not let the kid get injured, at any cost to himself (awkward landing). Love it! +Smile

It is obvious how few of you actually have children. I'll get flamed for this, but while the picture elicits a smile, if it is not photoshopped, I'd say it represents criminal negligence.

Ok, I read a lot of comments giving props and then some negative ones. I think the spirit of this photo is awesome and I 100 percent support this. For all those "what if nay sayers" think about it like this. What if you are just riding your bike by yourself and crash, fall off and break your neck or die (it happens all the time).....hmm that's bad parenting, so maybe you shouldn't bike if you are a parent? What if your are jogging with a stroller, it's more risky because every time you are out in the streets you are more likely to die. (people get killed by cats everyday)
It's all a silly argument. You have to take precautions, know your skill and limits, and enjoy life by taking risks. That's how your grow, evolve, and it's what makes us human.
  • + 24
flag rich-bell (Jan 29, 2008 at 9:05)
I agree with your comments to a degree.....however the difference is his baby doesn't have a choice in the matter! We all have a choice on what we do and if we get hurt doing it then thats our responsibility....a baby is not capable of saying "NO....I don't want to do that I might get hurt!" so there for it is irresponsible.

Don't get me wrong this photo made me smile but the reality is that if he were to crash his baby isn't gonna take it like we would there is a very high possibility it could die.

Great picture but please don't encourage this sort of thing, Especially without a lid.

Peace!

Please tell me thats a typo . . .

Also, i full respect the father/boyfriend for doing this, what a great way to bring your kids out into the world.

flag radek (Jan 29, 2008 at 9:25)
lol - ok that's a typo....I meant cars Smile
I think a baby never has a say in anything...it's all up to the parents. To further add to my point.....do I pay for a baby sitter every time I need to go to the store even for 30 miutes, or do I put the baby in a baby seat and drive my car to the store. Of course the safer thing is to get a baby sitter. Driving cars is dangerous and it would be very irresponsible to take your baby anywhere in a car unless you absolutely needed.

flag radek (Jan 29, 2008 at 16:08)
So I'm not a dad. I have no idea how old a kid is judging by it's size. I have been informed that the kid is only 8 months old, I assumed it was a few years old. A kid that young is still developing and just the motion that riding and never mind jumping, can be placed on a kids brain and neck is damaging. This means that it is really unsafe to do this to a kid this young. However great the notion of a dad taking his kid riding is, and as much I want to be cavalier about support of this, the fact is that if the kid is only 8 months old, just the motion of riding can harm him. So this is something that should not be done.

The great part about having all these opinions and conversation is that we can all learn something. Even I have changed my view on the subject not only due to a fact of the kids age, but also due to the general information from those that are more experienced in this matter. The good that I think and hope that comes from this POD is that we all will think twice, and maybe do some research before we embark on putting a young rider in a possible dangerous situation. I know in the years to come I'll think to this POD and the concerns of parents out there.

flag raceface77 (Jan 29, 2008 at 17:59)
seriously... how many parents out there do things like smoke cigarettes or drugs around their kids? Drink and drive with their kids in the car? Leave kids in cars on hot days? This is kinda the same thing... it seems harmless until shit hits the fan. How's Dad gonna feel when the "I didn't think that would happen" happens?

it looks strange for me, imagine when the bikes touches the ground, and the baby is probably 3-4 years old. Can a child of that age be aware of the necessity to suppress the stroke?....And then see what happens to the child's head.... i can feel his head move when i land .. its a soft touch on my back.
yeah yeah yeah i'm a shitty father, just don't you go drinking and driving.. or making any mistakes in your life.. or taking any risks.. what if i dropped him while i was holding him?
how many bike stacks with babys are there, to babies dropped with head injuries? blah blah blah, just enjoy the picture.

come on guys, most of you criticising him would take you kids in a car or leave a child near a pool alone which is alot more dangerous that that, its a teeny jump, not much air and i know a hell of alot of people that throw their babies up nd then catch them... again, way more dangerous... there are alot more dangerous things you can do to a child, this is meerly some harmless fun... have any of you ever heard of a kid beind seriously injured on a bike??? i know of none but personally have known children who have drowned in a bucket or a bath... get over yourselves, life is dangerous and some of you are too busy trying not too hurt yourselves and you have forgotten what living is about...

Just think for one second about the consequences of that guy crashing."

think for a second if your car crashes at 60 mph with your baby in it???? what happens if any guy crashes his bike with a kid on his back just riding on the road??? 2 foot of air isn't going to introduce any more danger than going 40mph on a commuter bike with a kid on your back.. crashes do occur when you least expect them and its not like this guy is doing it without thinking or what ever... calm the fuk down its not your baby and the kid is still alive so get over it..

i agree with my coutry boy here.
this oke is a really good rider. look at his album.
backflips. supermans etc.
yes i agree that accidents happen when you least expect it.
but 98% of the time that is because you get sloppy/tired.
this guy is very good on a bike.
on a sloppy day/bad day/ lack of concentration moment i would still say he could be better that 50% of the riders on this site!!!
with that said with his own kid on his back he won't get sloppy/lose concentration.
its his kid on his back, he is gona be uber uber carefull.
i look at this photo and i say great! i like it! look how stoked the kid looks! the first time that bad parenting popped into my head was when i read other peoples comments saying that.
this guy is a good rider. he is probably better than you. he is obviously gona be uber carefull with his kid on his back, and the chance of him falling is very slim.
his chances of falling with that kid on his back are smaller than yours when you are just riding along

Hea, wow, can you come up with any other pointless comparisons, . . . . I'm calm as a cue pal.
If I crash my car @ 60 KM/H than I'm sure my certified child safety seat would protect my child as it is meat to, and has been tested for. Taking your child for a bike ride in a regular child seat is a risk, agreed 100% but, and let me be very clear here, TAKING JUMPS AND OTHER NEEDLESSLY DIFFICULT TERRAIN, OR GOING NEEDLESSLY FAST, IS AN ADDITIONAL, UNNECESSARY GODDAM RISK. END OF STORY.
Would you retards stop defending this dumbass and understand, . . . the kid has no choice in this, and as stated before, does NOT know how to take impacts of any kind at ant time. Simply pointless and beyond everything else, RECKLESS!

sirflipalot: the kid is obviously having loads of fun so why does it matter that the kid can't say no, kids do cry when they dont like stuff. and accidents happen, its life get over it. the guy is hardly a "dumbass" for going out and having fun with his kid. does it look like he's flying down a mountain hitting 20ft doubles? no, hes riding some simple trails with his kid having fun. it's not you're kid, and you have no right to call him a bad parent. are you honestly saying that have never done anything that wasn't 100% safe with your kid just to have some fun? because if not then you must be one boring-ass parent. leave the guy alone and go put locks you're cupboards.

Can you imagine how many other brain dead dimwits are going to see this, load their 2 year old in a backpack, crash and cripple or kill the child.

Well im pretty sure after reading your comment, everyone is rushing to the door to hop on their bikes..Hopefully they'll at least bubble wrap the kid, I mean, come on now.. You cannot protect kids from everything. I think today's youth is so corrupt and mislead because we dont even experience life anymore..kids used to get pellet guns for x-mas..it didnt mean they were going to shoot people, and it was an experience that was common back then..now you practically have to have a license to get one. Can you imagine how many "brain dead dimwits" have dogs that are known to be aggressive around their infants. You hear about infants getting mauled by dogs all the time.. but does that stop people from doing it? Its a FREE WORLD. Isn't it Bush?

i have an addiction to biking and a 10 months baby.
although i can feel in my guts and heart how much fun this could be , i would never do it.
the crashing could be desastrous , but we put the baby in the car everyday(almost) and we all know how dangerous car accidents can be. it's the impact of landing jumps that would worrie me the most. as smooth as the landing could be , i think it can do some serious dammmage.

flag Spacewolf (Jan 29, 2008 at 10:52)
ok you can say that dangerous car accidents happen offen... that it is the same like walking on red light which we all do or done once/twice Wink

BUT...

Baby doesnt think like we do... Its our duty to think for it... To protect it .. thats why it is so controversal. Annyway i think its a bit selfish to take that risk .. what about other people who care about the kid? mother etc...?

But thats just my opinion anyway i share the idea of haveing fun and joy with kid its sure a great experiance...

the idea of sharin that with your kid is great.....but hes not even going to remeber it anyway. Also, for those who nay say the "what if" people with all these other dangerous things. EVERYTHING is dangerous, its about the actual probability of an incident occuring though. Walking a stroller with your kid cant even be compared to biking and doing jumps with him.

Truly, honestly, IMO this is a terrible idea. What a larger body can sustain as a "mild jolt" will be amplified for the child. Yes babies are "softer" but their muscles cant support them as well, to prevent jarring.

Just my 2 cents.

Old school, that is true enough that most people do stupid things with kids, but there is a difference between taking a kid for a ride and jumping with one on your back. If you look at the other pics he took a sizeable jump with the kid on his back and clearly doesn't clean it onto the tranny. The kids neck is obviously stressed and in case U don't know kids necks are very weak compared to adults'. Basically he is the Britney spears of biking and should have child and family services pay him a visit. He is obviously wanting to give his kid a cool experience, but there are better ways to do that than doing DJs with the kid strapped to you. There must be lots of smooth single track out there that presents no risk of death or paralysis to the child.

Right now somewhere in the world, i can bet a child is getting beat up by their own parent. Everybody is looking at this picture horrified. People take risks everyday. Why let the fear of "what if" hold you back all of your life? This guy is taking a lot of crap, because his picture is now glorified..This is obviously NOT the first time this has been done. There are 6 billion people in the world, and a fair amount have ridden bikes at one time or another. I think what everyone needs to do is just stop bitching so much. Just because this is the first picture most of us have seen of this situation does not mean that it is in fact the first time it has been done! Lighten up a little and just realize that it could be worse.. hell, feeding the baby food out of a jar is probably going to have a far more adverse affect on is life then taking him off a few jumps.

"Right now somewhere in the world, i can bet a child is getting beat up by their own parent"

WTF - does that make this right . . . .No.

"Why let the fear of "what if" hold you back all of your life?"

Again, WTF . . . it's a BABY. It can't hold itself back, and it's life is likely less than 700 days in so far.

"feeding the baby food out of a jar is probably going to have a far more adverse affect on is life then taking him off a few jumps"

Another one, just proving how retarded you (I really hope) must be. Please, do not breed for the good of us all.

flag derkaderka (Jan 29, 2008 at 13:17)
Hahah, I had one look at your profile..and then it donned on me. You really are 7!
For the record, I am not a retard, and I would prefer if you would not refer to me as one. At no point in my post did I refer to you in a derogatory manner, so I expect the same from you.
As you seem to be an expert in child development, I would expect that you must have some intelligence.

The point I was trying to make is that you guys are all taking this wayy to fcking seriously. There is kids being beat by the very same people who are supposed to protect them. This man obviously loves his kid and would like him to experience life. Some kids never have this, so instead of dwelling on what is wrong with this picture, understand that he is not harming the child. He is loving his child the way every parent should.

It is a picture, which means that, it was taken some time ago. Meaning, he is not going to go back in time, and not take his kid off the jump. And, im pretty sure, like most children, if the baby didn't like it, he would be bawling his eyes out.. Which, judging from the picture taken some time ago, he is NOT. It is common sense.

And seriously, you don't think that all of the harsh chemicals and additives being put into everyday consumer products are not going to have some affect on the outcome of this child's life? I'm pretty sure there is more of a chance this kid dies in a car crash than going over that jump. He doesnt go riding with the kid everyday, however I'm sure he takes the baby somewhere in a car everyday.

I seriously hope you do not have children. Because little would they know how narrow minded their father would be. Oh, trying to act mature, and then name calling looks real good. Keep it up buddy.

flag sirflipalot (Jan 30, 2008 at 6:49)
No prob man, as long as there are people out there who think that that there is no problem with taking on pointless additional risks like taking jumps with your kid in a child seat on the back of your bike with it's head bouncing around . . . . as long as you kinda people are out there to endorse and encourage this type of behavior, which is what you are doing by condoning it, then yes, I will be there to call you retards, and believe me I do not mean that in any type of derogatory way at all.
Simply retarded.

I have to admit if people don't like to look at things or what others are doing they can simply not look. I only choose to comment on this because in this case the child can't speak for itself. I have a child so I feel I have the creditials to speak on this. I think this is irresponsible of you and you should seriously consider the Risk vs. Reward here! It may be cool to look back on later to show you kid, but hopefully he/she is around to see it. The pictures in your album of you landing and the baby has no helmet you can see the babies neck is severly dis-proportionate to the body!!!
DUDE, what are you thinking, this is not cool!!! You are clearly a talented rider, but you seem to lack the ability to think past "yourself" and the consequences of your actions and the impact they have on others...I'm not sure of the child endagerment laws in your territory but in the States, this would make the 6, 8 and 10 o'clock news!
I repeat, please consider "RISK vs REWARD"..........

He is obvious focused on the simple little jump to keep it smooth AND fun for the little one. Crashes happen all the time when you are just riding along BECAUSE you are not focused on what you are doing. Can't wait to take my little guy out for his first rip.

The kid would probably smile & laugh if you placed him on the hood of your SUV & drove around the yard.
Fun does NOT make it SAFE. Putting such a young child's welfware at risk (even if appears to be low) for the sake of having just having fun or trying to get a POD is simply ignorant. I hope the rider (and others) never lives to regret taking a risk with his child who depends on his judgement. Maybe at the time, the rider did not think it was such a big deal. Now, hopefully all this concern by half of pinkpink readers will make him (and others) think twice before doing something like this.

Have fun & TAKE CARE all

Dumb, if you fall, your kid falls from a height far geater than his own height, he has no mechanism in place to react and stop his fall and his skull has not ossified and therefore he is more suseptable to brain injury even with the helmet. Great that you're outdoors and trying to include your kid in the fun but this is just plain reckless. Put the kid in a trailer, that way if you bail he is strapped in and is less likely to have a head injury.

For those of you that are saying this is not irresponcable, here's another picture of the baby: http://www.pinkbike.com/photo/1713445/ The neck on the baby looks strained. The rider know what he's doing riding, I can tell from the relaxed look on his face, but shaking the baby around like that can't be good!

This thread is great! It really seperates out all the paranoid posers with negative attitudes.
What is really illuminated is the lack of judgement and skill possesed by the nay sayers. Fear for the competence of others is like saying "Since I'm incompetant to do that then so is everybody else." News flash for all you girlymen, get over yourselves, if your parents were half as competent as this dude perhaps you would be less likely to freak out all the time like you are about this photo.

This picture really has sparked a heated debate. I have to agree with both points of view. As an older brother, I have done things like this, and it really is alot of fun. My little brother used to love getting on my back while we ride (now he just rides his own bike). I now realize how dagerous some of the stuff we did is, and I wouldn't do some of it agaian, but hey...we were kids. However, I don't have a problem with simple, easy rides, especially if adaquate saftey percautions are taken. That baby seems well stapped in, and he has a helmet. I assume that the father is confident in his riding ability and the terrain he's riding on, or else he probably wouldn't have taken the kid out with him. At least when you're riding, you have control over what happens.

I'm sure a lot of us here have toboganed, or riden a sled down a hill as children. In my opinion sledding down an icy hill is far more dangerous; 7-hills tobogan area in St. Albert is really steep for sledding, and its always packed with kids. Hills can have trees, bumps, and other obsticals that put kids in the hospital every winter. There are often city streets at the bottom of most hills. On top of it all, one has little to no controll when roketing down a hill on a sled. Sledding is far more dangerous than biking, and tons of kids do it in the winter too. As parents, we don't tell our children that they can't go sledding. Everything we do involves some degree of risk, and we accept that.

I was back country skiing over Christmas, and came upon a ski accident. The girl had no chance of skiing out of the area, and walking was out of the question (due to trail conditions, and skier's injuries). The trail back to start area was fairly technical, and the only option we could see was for me to carry her down on my back. After the nessesary first-aid was administered, we rigged her up, and skied down carfully. I guess what I'm getting at is; if you're careful and don't take any unessesary risks, then putting a kid on your back to go riding is acceptable. As for doing jumps and stuff like that, I would be a little uneasy, and I wouldn`t do that with my younger brother, or kid in this case.

That's just my opinion.

Anyway awesome picture and it looks like both of you are having a blast.

By the way how old is he/she and what is his/her name? Very cute baby.

Mellow dramatic? Words of wisdom from a 15 year old who still lets his mommy change his disposable daiper.

Do you have any idea how easy it is to snap a kids neck at that age? This guy (and you) are idiots for thinking this is okay.

Yes he probably thinks he is having fun with his kid, but he obviously has no idea how easily that poor kid could get hurt. And if the day ever comes when you have kids, I hope you have more sense than this guy does.

If not, then Natural Selection will take care of you and anyone else so stupid.

vish and most of the other people leaving comments here have no idea about human physiology, especially that of a baby's. some of vish's other baby & bike pics are far more disturbing than this one as well, so you really don't understand what's going on in these pics. do a little reading on shaken baby syndrome and you'll start to get an idea of the issues.

if you don't beleive what you read on the web, show these pics to your doctor and listen to what he or she has to say about riding with a baby on your back like this.

what will trigger SBS..
still .. everyone is different, not all 8month olds are the same.. correct? he does not get whip lash.. this argument pointless.. your looking at a Still picture! how the Hell can you tell? pictures say a thousand words.
you people are over reacting, what you are more concerned about is if i crash, well.. i say , worry about yourselves.. drive safer, ride in a skatepark full of kids more cautious, and most of all.. mind your own business.

Your the wanker..... lol.

He meant the pictures of himself and his kid on his profile. In two pictures he had a helmet on and the kid didn't. Looks like he has gotten to much bad press and deleted the pic's with the kid not wearing a helmet.

if all you people with negative comments took some time out to look at his gallery this guy is an intense rider. This jump is small and as he said a table. He has 7" of travel in the front and 6" in the back plus the shock release on his knees. The baby will be fine.
So harden up n dnt call him a bad father.

By the way Thevish its a great way to spend time with ur kid. Keep it up and have a gud time doin it

QUESTION??? Where did the other pics go of you riding with your baby? I recall your child did not have a helmet on in two of the pics... you can also tell the helmet does not fit your child's head... The other pics also showed your child's head flopping around like a wet noodle...These are the pics that pissed off a lot of people...and yes even good riders fall...

are you asking me a question?
have you read my blog on this?
i yell caution! in this regard.. don't just strap your kid to your back and do what ever the hell you want.. i don't condone that at all, i say you make that decision as a parent
yourself... if you fall and hurt your child, you have yourself to blame.
if i want to wipe my kids ass in a downward motion with baby wipes.. thats my choice as a parent... if i don't want him immunised and have his shots at birth.. thats my choice..
infact.. i get to name him as well right? i am not abusing my child.. there's is no abuse there.. But there is however potential room for error which is lerking at every corner of a persons life.. the painkillers you left under the bed, the pool fence you never put up, the drunk driver you did'nt see.. or in my case.. equipment failure [my bike could fail]
yep.. could happen, shoulda coulda woulda.
bottom line is, everyone wants to have a say in someone else's life, they have such a boring one of there own.. they are always looking over the neighbours fence.
were any of you people on pinkbike there when i strapped him on? all you see is a still picture.. which can say 1000 words but only mean 4, MYOB.

while your at it, pay for some of his food.. and when he's throwing a tantrum because i did'nt give him what he wanted.. can you provide it? make him a nice brat?

I'm nowhere as good a rider but it most definitely would be a great experience for my little one if i had her strapped on my back (prolly a stationary bike though, lol). both my wife and i love the sport and can't wait to have our little one get the mountain biking bug! cheers!

Ergo is the brand..
thanks mate.. i don't encourage you to do what i did.. and i'm sure you won't..
but seriously.. don't put your kid in one of those stupid ass bike seats that mums n dad's with almost no biking skills take their kids on the street with.. i HIGHLY encourage having bub's strapped
to you (not front) .. that way you have a little more control of where you fall..you'll have baby cushioned by your back in the event of falling forward from front wheel wash out etc etc.
honestly, i ride my bike so much.. it's like walking for me, those 2 wheels are my legs.

You f*cking f*ggot, you don't even know what the f*ck you're talking about. We're concerned for the child's safety, while the father is clearly not. It's extremely dangerous to be jarring the kid around like you would on a mountain bike. When the kid's only 8 months old, his bones are not yet nearly as strong as those of an adult and will easily break with heavy impact and/or vibration, such as that from stutter bumps or small drops and jumps.

yeah, as stated earlier, you cant avoid danger, you might as well live in a bulletproof padded room all your life, whats the harm in sending it with a kid on your back
kid looks like they are having fun, wearing a helmet too so wont become a vegetable.
its more dangerous crossing a road if you ask me, as long as the rider doesnt take unnecessary risks
