All this talk about helmets really got me wondering. How many people would die with no seat belts, or eaven air bags. ive read most of the comments and see one particular person sunning his mouth about how helmets are gay. A helmet is just like a seat belt, a percausion to keep you safe. i would much rather look weird with a helmet than take the chance of brain damage. in fact it has happened. head first into a tree but because of my helmet i got up and rode to the bike shop ad bought a new one. Helmets save lives and alow you to laugh at the people doing stupid things around you instead of lying in a bed waiting for somone to feed you.

Thats true the standards for motorbike helmets are regulated more extensively. But a motorbike helmet isnt as lightweight as a push bike one.
And they have to have 'higher' standards as there is a lot more variables to take into account.
- The standards arent higher as such, somewhat different. There isnt a definitive standard for mtb helmets i dont think. So it can be hit and miss, one mtb helmet standard can fulfill certain requirements and others can suit other requirements.

Motorbike helmets can still twist and snap a humans neck if caught wrong.
I have seen a new 'skin; thing developed by lazer i think to help prevent this.

And there is more money in motorbike helmets hence better regulated standards.

Now in Lithuania there is a law, that you must wear a helmet if you are younger than 18 years. If you are 18 and more - helmet is only a recommendation.
I have a full face helmet and I wear it when I'm riding on a trail or doing some crazy stuff. Some time ago I used it riding in the city centre. I heard "lol", "dude you suck", "hahahaha" so many times... And I did stop wearing it. I didin't hit my head anywhere from that time. People in my country don't understand why helmets are important and they don't know anything about extreme biking. They think that bike is a transportation tool to go from point A to B and not getting ijured. They think that bike is safer than a car, cuz you are riding a sidewalk. I only saw some street style riders and some xc riders wearing helmets. I thnk that every one SHOULD wear a helmet for their safety. This picture and comments show why... I'd better be called "idiot", than get a brain damage and could not wipe my @$$. From now on 2008-07-06 I promise that I will wear a helmet.

lol...id be dead or worse, (being spoon fed by some fat bitch at a nursing home who cba to shave her legs or pits...i dont think any lad wants that.) with out my TLD, iv seen riders hit trees, rocks, sign posts, a car, iv seen cracked lids and scratched lids. i think they look cooler a bit scratched up, it shows u; A cant ride and B shows ur determind to nail somthing thats thrown u off once or twice. iv hit a car with out a lid one once...im f*cking lucky to be alive i jsut rolled the bonnet off the windscreen on onto my ass, plus there was to hot girls driving who gave me a f*g, lol it f*cked my back a little but im still riding, last summer i broke my first lid in half bailing onto a rock garden as well as fracturing my wrist.
allso my mate once hit a tree so hard the tree snaped, it wasnt very thick but a good 3/5 inches, lol later that nite we sessend a wooden park, at night, int he rain...he didnt were a lid....he cracked his skul, chiped a tooth broken nose and fractured eye soket froma 7ft face plant onto concret... not funny...but yeah any way

think befour u tease death, and ware a lid, its taken us millions of years to become what we are, we dont need to go back in time to the stone ages.

This is good to see things like that but the only ultimate way to make some idiots wear a helmet (and everyone riding without a helmet, especialy in woods, dirtjumps or skateparks is a selfish idiot with lack of self confidence) is to make wearing it cool, and not wearing it totaly ridiculous and stupid. A way for it is to make riding without helmet illegal, just as it is with riding a motorbike.

This needs to be POD. I used to think helmets were pretty gay but then one saved me from ruining the rest of my life. I went over a big double on the 4x track in schladming, straight over the bars and my head hit a rock. I was out cold for 5 minutes so imagine the damage if I wasn't wearing a full face.

i fell back when i was trying to jump of steps and hit my head on the steps, i was knocked out for like 20 seconds and threw up and saw stars. i WAS wearing a helmet which was extrememly lucky because if i haddnt been i hate to think what could have happened.

This is such a powerful image. I have used this image when speaking in classrooms to kids about the use of helmets. I would like to see a more adults wearing lids when riding. I believe its hipocritical when they make their child wear one but feel it is OK to ride without one themselves.

YES, MAKE THIS A POD ALREADY! My father is a funeral director I can not tell you how many cyclists and children he has buried over the years because they were not wearing helmets. I also worked in law enforcement for years and if only I had and could post the people that were seriously injured, paralyzed and killed because of not wearing a helmet.

this is a lot like choosing weather or not to wear your seat belt, what people seem to be forgetting though is that you aren't just affecting yourself by not wearing a lid. Think about the guy/girl who may permanently disable you because you didn't choose to protect yourself, or your parents, friends, loved ones... it's more of a responsibility than anything else. You're responsible to not make yourself a liability to society and put your loved ones through the horror of having to endure seeing you all f*cked up.

I think I know quite a few (loosely used) riders that should be wearing helmets while walking. Then they should have to notify the hospital and staff if they are going to go for a ride. Because it is inevitable that (THEY) are going to get hurt. ugh argh OMFRIGGIN GOD! Doesn't matter if you're riding DH, BMX, road, or just getting from A to B. The laws of physics apply on any type of riding, no matter how intense or easy. A $30 lid from a bike shop can save you hundreds in medical bill and your family thousands in buying a coffin. I'd rather be riding with a lid then riding in a car to the cemetery. Enough said.
