He must have over-shifted the granny cog once, look at those spokes. They won't last long now.

My chain managed to bounce over the big cog and before I knew what was happening the damage was done! That actually happened months and months ago and there has yet to be an issue. You are right though, with aluminum spokes this is the biggest problem (like the spoke that broke after getting gouged by the pedal), but I've had no issues from the damage you see here. I don't think it is quite as bad as it looks though!
