Considering the lack of clearance from the bottom of the derailleur cage to the ground, maybe you should consider lacing up an 8-speed Shimano internal hub on the next model, if there ever is one. Kids aren't heavy enough to break them and they offer enough gears for most DH applications. Also the extra weight of the hub would be moot, because you'd be able to remove some of the chainguide elements since you'd have a constant chain tension with a single cog in the back.

wait was that a single crown that you somehow made a dual crown? because it looks kind of messed up. but seraph has a good idea, the derailleur is really low to the ground, you'd hit it off everything.
