The point of the grass is to hold the earth on the side on the jumps together. If its not packed down, when it rains the track SLOWLY starts to fall apart. The grass roots give it firmness and makes for longer life of the track.
Probably nothing at all, Lord Coe and the lot in charge of the biking at the olympics are being proper harsh. I read in mbuk that the tracks are going to be tiny. That looks immense though!
