In the UK it's normal to have the front brake on the right and the rear on the left. Not everyone does, but it's considered the standard way for a bike to be set-up.

I'm not 100% sure why but if I had to guess I'd say it's due to the fact most people are right handed, and as most braking is done on the front for proper weight distribution and correct braking bias (not taking tricks that use the brakes into consideration) it makes sense to have the most powerfull hand operate it.

On my BMX I only ran a back brake, so I put it on the right so I could operate it with my more powerfull hand. Now I have two MTBs it's annoying as they have the standard set-up and it's hard to get used to!

Eitherway, neither is right or wrong, just whatever the rider prefers
