WEAR A HELMET! Buy yourself a properly fit, comfortable helmet, with good ventilation so wearing it is a pleasure. Stop wondering whether it is cool, groovy, mint or not to wear a helmet. Make sure that you understand whether not wearing a helmet is an attitude, life style or just a dangerous condition. Imagine how much sorrow you would cause to your parents lying in coma on a bed hospital. BE SMART! BE YOURSELF! WEAR A HELMET!

"Helmet while riding street? The picture would be ruined" - HOW STUPID ARE YOU?! One thing is being completely immature by thinking that way but another thing is to spread that crap from your head around. UR damn 20 - grow UP! or get a psychic that will increase you self confidence so you no longer have to consider whether it is cool, groovy, mint or not to wear a helmet!

flag willfisher (Nov 25, 2008 at 14:41)
I didn't think I needed to clarify that my statement was entirely my opinion. To ME, the presence of a helmet in a street picture just takes away from it. It just looks real gay and unnatural in that environment. If you hold up two of the same photos, one with a helmet and one without, the helmetless pic looks more legit, it subconsciously makes the rider look more comfortable with what he's doing. Skatepark photos are a different story since helmets are a more common practice there, but at the same time street photos are preferable since the skatepark is "just practice". It's one of those things, either you get it or you don't. I will agree with you that it is totally retarded, but it's a reality. Maybe it will change with the recent incidents in BMX with people going down hard, we will see.

No question though, clearly a helmet is a good idea, I have worn one for a solid 16 years. It's something thats personal preference. I CHOOSE to wear a helmet when I ride and I CHOOSE not to wear one for some photos depending on how comfortable I am with the trick and what I want from the picture.

I'm stoked to read your comment, usually what I hear when I'm posting thing like that on "my private war" against no helmet is shut the f***k up, U have no idea what'yo talking about, once was even called a poser for riding in a helmet heh. Yes I understand what you mean by picture message and that's what is worst for me. I think not every magazine director understands how much does the helmetless Pro on a pic impact teenage kids without stabilized self confidence (which is normal) That is problably one of the biggest reasons of this state of things - a self propelling "no helmet is the atitude - machine"... sorry for bad words...Cheers

Well, let's start a little war then. I wasn't told off as I have a lot more to say. ALL NO HELMET ATTITUDE IS FOR POSERS ONLY. Willfisher's post although a kind one is just prooving that fact. BMX world connected strongly with Hip Hop world where respect and reputation means nearly everything follows that trend and riding without a helmet is just for show - Im rippin', i don't need one - if U don't know what are U doing, if U suck and U are scared to fall - go on and wear one! Saying that wearing it or not is a personal preference is narrow minded. ONE THAT IS STUPID ENOUGH to not wear it while performing stunts must be aware of the fact that there are kids watching and they will not wear a helmet. If a picture of a guy in a helmet makes someone think that he doesn't know what he is doing then what?! Steve Peat should ride without a helmet too?! OOh.. that's why he wears a long sleeve jersey! So U can't see his armor right?! So we get more respect for him? Well then maybe Tony Hawk is a mama boy cause he wears a helmet why promoting the game! ALL PEOPLE NOT WEARING HELMETS: U ARE POSERS WITH A LIMITED SELF CONFIDENCE! ALL MAGAZINE WITH PICTURES OF PROS WITHOUT HELMETS: U ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR KIDS SUFFERING BRAIN TRAUMA FROM CRASHES WITHOUT HELMETS!

Your relentless "private war" on helmet-less riding is a little much. Don't get me wrong, it's great that you have your own beliefs on the topic but imposing them on others is unnecessary, especially when you fail to accept the opposing point of view. It's somewhat similar to the Mormon's knocking on my door spreading the word of their saviour Jesus Christ... Glad that you've found something you're into but can you leave my door step so I can realign myself with Mecca and continue "wasting my time praising Allah." Now I know the only way to gain momentum on your movement is to get out there and recruit but seriously it gets irritating. (Disclaimer: I do not belong to a religion)

I would normally feel sympathy for you being called a "poser" for riding with a helmet. However the irony in you calling me and anyone else riding without a helmet a "poser" somewhat defeats any feeling of the sort.

I am also in limbo deciding what is more "narrow minded", me saying that people should have the choice to wear a helmet or not. Or, you calling people "stupid" and "posers with a limited self confidence" for not wearing helmets furthermore claiming that pros and magazines are responsible for kids suffering from brain trauma.... hmm freedom of choice Vs. insults and accusations.. It's a no brainer for me. (for lack of a better pun)

You say "One that is stupid enough to not wear it while performing stunts" suggests there is a time where it is appropriate to ride a bike without a helmet. This insinuates that you must have some sort of a formula for calculating the risk factor of different activities. Possibly you could construct a chart displaying what safety gear should be worn for each activity or particular trick. Maybe we should all live in a rubber room for the rest of our lives. It's extreme, but where do you draw the line for safety equipment? Maybe we shouldn't waste our time with helmets, we should just put our bikes down and live vicariously through Dave Mirra 2 or another video game of choice.

All I care to leave you with is that people are free to make their own decisions and decide when, where and if they are going to wear a helmet or any other gear for that matter. If they make a bad judgement call well then thats something they will have to live with, thats life. They should not be held accountable for "influencing" someone else's choice. People should be able to make an informed decision without being ridiculed or called names.

I'm going to get back to riding my bike while spittin' some sick flows because you know how us gangsta BMXers get down... BMX and hip hop... never ending parallels! Sorry I had to...

CONCLUSION: You are everything that you hate!

Love,
Will XOXO

Words are sort of primitive and are what they are just because these are the ones hitting the ears and sometimes boiling inside. Current wear a helmet actions with pictures of kids are good but in the eyes of kids dreaming of riding a BMX - they cannot compete with a picture of a PRO railing without a helmet 10m over the asphalt. No action can compete with a worshiped god doing a railgap on 20m stairs without a helmet.

Not wearing a helmet - that is a style and attitude. - fact? Well I'm not a sociologist, I 'm not gonna pay any grant for any PHD of sociology or marketing to check that.
Wearing a helmet protects the head during the impact - that is a fact - nothing more can be said about it - it just happens, you fall down (even PROs do) your head hits the concrete or brick, helmet takes the hit first and then transfers the stress to the head on a relatively big surface.

Stop thinking about your own ego guys, and think about the heads of kids admiring you. Kids watch U riding and do what you do. That's why ppl not wearing helmets and magazines are coresponsible for their injuries

You are a wise man willfisher indeed, Therefore you know how marketing works, you know who will be the last man standing in this discussion... for now, it is the company's benefit for kids to wear a branded hat. It is the industry that makes lots if not the most of influence on PPL attitude. You know how many PPL are really "true to the cause" and how many sheeps there are... You know that the market is oriented on sheeps, and does not care at all about "true guys". You know exactly how politics influence marketing strategies... wearing a helmet is not safe - politics don't like things that are not safe and are easy to ban... that's a matter of time

yes and I do hate things... I hate actions leading to serious complications just because someone thinks that it is cool to avoid precautions which in that case: are not problematic at all to the subject of interest. This is exactly the same case as fastening the seatbelts or not - the dead style and attitude of dragracers

And I do not have any specific feelings about Hip Hop, I only know that average Hip Hopers are fragile about their reputation - and average PPL listen to average HH...

One's riding skills has nothing to do with the current discussion. I have nothing against BMX, I do respect BMX riders whether they are street, park dirt or whatever BMX riders. I have a lot against riding without a helmet, and even more against showing pics of guys without helmets in a public media. I have a one question? WHY PEOPLE RIDE WITHOUT A HELMET? please tell me why?

flag damian66 (Dec 23, 2008 at 6:46)
because in this world, there are many choices we have to make, and depending on what the circumstances are, your surroundings, f*ck, even how you are feeling, influence what you do, now no disrespect to you, its great that you think everyone should wear a helmet, thats fine, but you know, its a personal decision like Will mentioned, and you just have to deal with that, a large population of youth grow up with nagy parents that make them wear a helmet, and you know what they do, now when you are an adolescent, you begin to see how other people do things, and other riders can be a huge influence, but when you are an adult, like kay Will is, you learn to make those decisions for yourself, and it becomes a lifestyle, a force of habit even, to just grab you bike and go, the bike itself is more times that not, more important than the safety equipment you use while riding it, ne ways, that summs up this argument,

"dumb ppl" don't wear helmets
"smart ppl" wear helmets

there ya go, stop commenting now.
