an i no ill get neg proped 4 this but it kinda looks like he's lying down lookin at summit realy close and a bike is just flying past him lol. im goin to neg prop maself for that, bt o well lol
yea i was watching it on freecaster also. it wasnt the crash that hurt him... he was around 9-10 seconds ahead of 1st place (Peat) before he crashed... it was a garenteed win (untill this) after Hill crashed he got right back up, and kept on going, and still managed to place about *HALF A SECOND* behind Peat AFTER he crashed! that just shows how fast Hill was going, to beable to crash, and yet still be that close to 1st.... must of been devastating for him though!
Bike-person, Peat was first at the time of the crash (Gee was the last one down, after Sam), so you were right the first time. I have to say though, has everyone forgotten September of 2007 already? Greg Minnaar was on his Worlds winning run, then he crashed in the woods, got back on his bike and recovered a 4th place finish WITH THE BROKEN AND DISLOCATED SHOULDER THAT HE ATTAINED DURING THAT CRASH! Seems like everyone's heads are just too far up Sam's ass to realize that that's just far more impressive than what Sam did on Saturday! Granted Sam was on a pace to win by more than Greg probably would have (although looking at Greg's winning margin at Fort Bill last weekend, maybe not that much more), but he still only finished one spot higher overall after the crash than Greg did last year. Plus Sam also cried because he didn't win, which is not the most humble thing to do. I guess he was hoping to be able to beat Vouilloz' record by winning 10 Worlds' in 10 years. Oh well. Okay, now I've said something both true and controversial in a big group of Sam Hill fans on Pinkbike. If you've ever wondered if there's a limit to the negative props you can have on here, I'd say you're about to find out.
Cheers teh Sam for the best run in teh Championship up until the end. His first 3/4 of the rcae were like nothing I've ever seen! Sorry you went down bro.
I think Sam Hill crashed because of all that damn chrome on his bike ...reflected into his eyes and made him eat shit(but honestly if he knew he was ahead by alot he probably would have taken that corner a little bit slower and would have been world champ!)
Amen -Alex2- that was the first thing i thought of when i saw his crash on freecaster. I love Sam Hill, and think what he's doing for mountain biking is incredible. But for him to cry at the end?
as a lesson to all: this is what the bike gods do when you wear a skin suit. (we all know that half of any sport is how good you look doing it, and spandex doesn't fit the bill)
The spandy is necessary for Worlds finals, everyone has to run it. I can't imagine guys like Peaty rocking the skinsuit by choice! You'll see guys like Peaty and Kovaric in baggy jerseys with their national colours in practice (which must have been made specifically for Worlds practice), because they don't want to put on the spandex untill they absolutely have to. It's just for finals that everyone suits up.
not really. He's the worlds most talented technical downhill rider. He should win. I don't like to see anyone crash, and the best man should win. Majority of times, Hill is best.
Well, I wouldn't say the majority of times. As you said, he's currently the world's best technical downhill rider, so it just depends whether the majority of courses are technical or otherwise. Last year the majority of courses rewarded more fitness and maintaining momentum, so the majority of times Greg was best. That said, we all know Sam won worlds. Just as Greg won worlds '07 and the cup in '06, Josh won junior worlds '07 and Blinky '06, Steve and Anne won worlds '04, and Nico won worlds '00. And to all the fair weather Gee fans: picking up this scrap was the highlight of Gee's career, I doubt he'll ever win the cup or do it again. Just like Myles Rockwell.
And Gee won worlds in '08. What I mean is we know who REALLY won all those races. Greg dislocated/broke his shoulder and still managed 4th in '07 (Sam picked up the win) and flatted in Brazil in '06 (Steve picked up the overall), Josh flatted in '07 (Ruaridh picked up the win) and Blinky went OTB in '06 (Cole picked up the win), Steve spun out on the second last corner (Fabien picked up the win) and Anne crashed badly in practice in '04 (Quinn picked up the win), and Nico flatted in '00 (Myles picked up the win). Just like Sam pushed his front wheel in '08 and Gee picked up the win. That's racing, but if you look into it you'll see who the real winners of the day were.
I wouldn't say real winners of the day. They were fastest down the hill, yes. But obviously they didn't ride intelligently enough to take the win. Hill pushed too hard, washed out, Greg rode over the limit and broke his shoulder. All those incidents are cases of the rider pushing too hard, or choosing a line that won't carry them through in one piece.
I disagree with that. They were all on runs that were well within their abilities. Sam was quoted saying he crashed on the easiest part of the track, Greg has won at Fort Bill before and since the crash with larger margins than that, and of course the flat tire incidents were not because of rider error (Greg's rim was scarred by a nail in Brazil on a winning run after winning qualis and he still barely lost the overall to Steve). I only used examples I felt were genuinely unfortunate, as opposed to just overly greedy or sloppy. We all know Sam is fastest in Schladming, but I wouldn't call him the winner of the day last year 'cause he tried for a margin again and made a lot of mistakes. He deserved what he got.
Sam may have crashed on the easiest part of the track, but why did he crash? Because he was going too fast, and going beyond the limits of his tyre's grip.
I don't think so, because he didn't slide out both ends at once and he wasn't even close to going off course on the outside. He just swung the back end out at the start, then evened it out, then couldn't bring the bike back into a drift again and the front end went off on a tangent. It just really seems to me that the turn was well within his abilities and it was just bad luck that he made a stupid little mistake on that particular part of the track on his final run. Only Sam could say for sure though.
There is no such thing as bad luck riding downhill. Bad luck would be a meteor landing on the track directly in front of you on a Worlds Winning run. Sam was going too fast on too much of an angle, therefor here was pushing it too hard. Had he not been going so fast, at so much of an angle, he wouldn't have fallen. No denying that.
There's no such thing as bad luck but a meteorite would be bad luck? You could say that had he not been going so fast he wouldn't have fallen whether or not it was within his abilities, that's why there's no denying that. Clearly we disagree, but I'm trying to be diplomatic. If you'd like to take this any further you'd have to ask Sam whether or not he thinks he should've been able to take that corner at that speed.
actually he was in front by 10 when he crashed fr112358, but yeah poor Sam he was guttered at the bottom! He had an amazing run, but props to the guy that took this shot.
actually, i think if he would have made that corner like Peaty and Gee (there was a small berm up there) he would have been just fine and would have killed that course. not to bad for crashing and placing 3rd
Thats what i think 'mountnbiker' he always cuts corners instead of taking them wide, so he doesn't have to go as far, that's probly why he fell off. Has anyone else noticed who reads Dirt that Sam Hill rekons, to make the sport progress that DH courses need to be a lot harder and tech...that's only because he's the best at riding tech stuff. I think i would be embarassed to be beaten by someone who fell off!
but either way, he's an extremely good rider, he doesnt depend on his components to make him better... he knows HE made a mistake, not his tires... .02
hell no am i saying im better! i'd be scared of myself if i was!
i feel sorry for him, but i'm super happy that someone else is winning all the medals for a change, it got a bit overbearing sam dominating everyone! not to knock his skills, i mean wiping the board with pro riders by like eight seconds or whatever his biggest margin was is fucking unbelievable, but it's good someone else can win for a bit!
I am waiting to see who takes out the round here in Canberra (as we have the worlds next year). The Stromlo track and Val Di Sole could not be more different and it won't suit Sam anywhere near as much. Peaty might just get his best shot at the Worlds next year at the Canberra pedal-fest
Hodges you're a tool! Sam like the rest of the Aussie team is FORCED to wear lycra at the worlds so if anybody was gonna get the smackdown from karma for that one it shoulda been Sharples... And whats wrong with Dutch bags??? Oh you mean douchebag!!! Tool... go hit on your sister...
Hodges and his sister would make strange babies. His sister is a bad lay too. Her pussy is like a bowl of yogurt.... Expired yogurt. His mom on the other hand is POTENT. She does that thing with her tongue!! Every guy on here knows what I'm talking about (even Hodges). RUINED.
Sam Hill is an amazing rider probably the best and no doubt he would have won if he hadnt have crashed BUT its his fanatical followers that get on my nerves. If Gee had crashed on that coner and Sam had won the would really not be much fuss about it because Sam won so all his "sheep" like followers can be happy and Gees crash would just fade away no POD or anything. Damit hes biblically good but stop shagging him!!!
Now just watch the fanatics send in about 10 million -ve props
No, he shouldn't have won. He was going to fast for his skill and couldn't keep the bike controlled at that speed. Gee managed to go insanely fast too, but knew how far he could push and didn't step over his limits of control. Hence Hill - 3rd, Atherton - 1st.
I think he's using "should have" to mean he "expected" him to win - and that's a fair judgment because Hill was flat out through all the difficult parts.
I agree with kendall07, Hill is an awesome rider but all DH riders ride on the edge, Hill pushed to hard and crashed. Gee pushed right on the edge and won thus deserved it the most. Look at the line choice by peaty and co on the same turn, they all bank high and use the grass for traction to sling shot around the bend, hill was cutting corners all the way down and it cost him in the end.
kendall07: if u have ever raced DH then you would know that EVERY racer tries to push there limits and go past there skill and comfort level just to gain that extra second to win!
Kendall07 he may have been going a little faster but isn't that what mountain biking is? I personally mountain bike to push my limits and always keep pushing on I don't know about you but I think he was just pushing trying to win and made a mistake. It's still amazing he could fall like that and get on his bike and push hard to get 3rd. Even after a crash like that. You have your opinion but I think he was doing what all mountain bikers should.
Hey, all of you. Pushing your limits makes you better. Pushing your limits when you shouldnt causes mistakes. I didn't see the race, but maby Sam pushed his limits, maby he didn't and that part of the course got the best of him. You don't actually know unless you are him, he could have felt completely comfortable.
no he shouldnt have one it sucks when people say that! he was goin to fast, he risked too much, he lost control! gee pinned it but not so much that he lost control therefore he won!
major props to hill for getin third tho that in itself is pretty damn impressive!
i'm glad for Gee, but if it wasn't for this crash Sam would've smoked them by 7 seconds. but hey this is racing. whoever makes the fewer mistakes wins!
How good would it have been if Gee had not ridden so good, and sam had been .5 sec's quicket at the top, and still beaten peaty? That would have shown REAL talent. To be 0.5 behind the second place finisher AND to have fallen off is something special. If you watch the video, he struggles to get his feet back on the pedals when he gets back up, that could have saved him .5 seconds and he still could have came 2nd.
Wow, back and forth between everyone with this whole Sam vs. Gee thing. Gee is super rad, but I gotta say that Sam is a helluva lot better. The results for the last five years tell the story. Period. Game over. Sam is faster 90% of the time.
he was so faster than Peat by then he fell just as the commentator was screaming "Oooh he is SO FAST Don't fall please!" And even with the fall he was 1 or 2 secs behind Peaty
sam was on for a huge winner, but as he says it wasnt his run that day, he took a fall. good on him though, the times were so close and to come 3rd with a big crash, well done to him. he is leagues away from the other riders.
almost 6 seconds up at the split and cud have cruzed to the line at around 6 seconds up wen he crashed and was only 2.5 seconds of the top bummer but thats kinda the sport its all fair i wouldnt call a rerace for it for sure if he had held himself together he would have donnit but gee was able to hold himself together and pulled it off but i would still like to see peaty win world champs one day that has to happen before he retires.
such a shame about that he was pinning it all the way down though on that little section he took a different line to everyone else if he went a little slower through it might have made it just unfortunate!
I hate those stupid comments about skinsuit, what the hell is wrong with it?! This is a highly professional sport, and it shall be even more when it finally goes to Olympics, there will no place for "style" and "I don't ride it cuz it looks stupid". There will be just time table; and if pink skin suit gives a 2secs better time than the black one, they will use the pink one! And if the TV and commercial business will like Gangsta coats they shall wear them. Until now, shut UR damn mouths PIMPS!
^^ "PIMPS" is not an insult. Most guys would take that as a compliment. In fact, when my hoes call me Pimp, Daddy, or Sir, I don't slap them as much. Also, is a pink skin suit more aerodynamic, or are you just making up an excuse to wear pink??? (pussy). Time for rehab.
Dont care about 1 Crash....Sam is THE BEST Dh rider in th world by a long shot....Just bad timing...He was up by almost 6 second at the first mark....Thats epic.
They all were dressed in tights .
I admit I wanted Gee to win, but seeing Sam 's run ,gave me the creeps .And the track was unridable .
I watched his run like 10 time. He owned all the others.
The pride is knowing you made it across the line without making the mistake "Hill" made. I think you missed a little bit of "Hills" nut butter, better lick it off the carpet. On race day, your previous record doesn't matter, what matters, is who is the better biker that day, and that day alone. When you lose, you lose, when you win, you win. No one can go back and change time for Sammy. He rode how he rode, and ate the dirt.
you cant be unimpressed with his run before that point though, brilliant to watch, likewise gee and steves runs were great to watch, peat looks so smooth over everything.
absolutely gutted peat has missed out again! been waiting years and years for him to get the rainbow jersey
"yaaaa" that grass looks really good!!!!! can you bring some home for me?? I really wish sam didwin because Gee is a flaming homo and he sucks giant elephant balls!! cheers and Gee is a Fag
i must say wtf is the LYCRA about but hey lol ? and well shit happens you get back up and ride again i just call it tuff luck theres plenty other races to crash in woops sorry i mean win in lol
gee 1st and peaty 2nd!! awesome race!! altho the legend of sam hill was about 10 secs up wen he did this!! that hurts!! he finished.53 behind steve peat after crashing!!! crazy, the boys got talent.
i really wanted to see him just absolutely crush everyone with his time. 10 seconds up on peaty, that would have meant 8 seconds up on gee. man i wish he made that corner. there are no words to describe how fast he was going
Well (being british) I'm certainly glad Gee won, but still I feel SO bad for Hill! At that point where he is face down, what must be going through his mind???? He knew he had a good run!!
Hill is the best downhill rider in the World...I don't know how does he do it...maybe he is not human Nearly 6 secs in the first section, that is unbeliveable...
wheyyyyyy his eyebrow fell off hahahahah his trying to stick it back on . ahh its unlucky he is the best in the world currently im glad for gee he deserves this win
Whether or not you are keen, why wouldn't you want to see the best guy win? Being glad he fell is crap compared to begin glad Gee or Peaty beat him. I never want to see a race won or lost based on a fall. I want them all to have near perfect for their skill runs and the guy who deserves the win to get it. Being patriotic is great, being prejudiced is weak. Wishing bad on somebody is spiteful. What do you want to be?
THIS GUY ATE SHIT LIKE THERE'S NO TOMORROW.. HOLY. HE MUST HAVE BEEN GOING PREETY DARN FAST THOUGH. IT'A GOOD THAT HE SUCKED IT UP THOUGH.
DEFINETALY POD
Absolutly not. peat and gee were better racers on that day. If you watch hill he is kinda loose cannon when he has the lead. Apperently about 100m before his coach yelled 10 seconds. I mean if you go from that into a two wheel drift and catch a rock it is kinda karma if you ask me. The kid is amazing and is the fastest person on a bike. But he was not the best racer that day. On a second note i kinda felt bad for peaty. That guy needs some rainbow shit.
As amazing as sam is you cant take it away from gee... they both raced well and gee DIDNT fall and sam did... at the end of the day its about the win not how amazingly you ride!
^^^wow, its not all about having the title of "winner". You should enjoy what you do. And doing as good as you can is better than getting respect from the title of being the winner. If i didn't deserve to win something and did, i wouldn't feel deserving at all. Again, gee didn't win, Sam lost.
Dont worry pistol2ne i wasnt saying it in response to what you said, it was just a statement, related to earlier comments... and i dont really like sam (he's amazing, dont get me wrong) and i really like gee.
lol, well if u wanna win u generally have to use spandex, take fort william for example, rach atherton said the otherday, skinsuits save between 8- 10secs
Ha ha ha ha ha ha sit down Mr Hill, it's time for the Brits to take over this scene. Maybe it was the bitchin lycra outfit made him loose concentration for a split second. If it was then that be rough justice in it's purest form. Anyone (including big Gee) who wears lycra for downhilling deserves to fall off!
So just about every single rider in the world cup then? Or maybe you should just respect the fact that they're representing their countries and wearing their national team kit (designed purely for FUNCTION not FASHION) with pride, and show some support? Just a thought
Dude, did you watch the race? All the top guys, including Gee, wore skinsuits. It is a requirement for all. Not a choice. If you were told you were good enough to represent your country in a sport you lived for but only if you took it seriously and utilized every advantage you could, would you say no. Stop judging stupid.
they've been doing it for years - national team kits. even peaty used to. Congrats to Gee, gutted for Sam (would've much prefered it to come down to a photo finish with Gee just pipping it by 0.0001 sec)...big props to photographer for catching the moment so devastatingly well.
What the hell??? Has to be the best POD in a hellofa long time!! It actually had a big part to play in the WC's, if you didn't know, which I guess you didn't! Idiot!
nothing special?!!! what the hell do you want, Elvis and Lord Lucan going head to head on bikes made out of unicorn teeth?!! This is THE biggest, most dramatic moment of the year so far, now immortalized by the skill and attention of a photographer who, had he chosen to stand on another part of the track would have been lost forever and become merely a rumour.
any 1 that says something like that "donjerzy" is just a rookie biker who doesnt know enough about the sport to fully understand a picture and what its actually worth!
