looks like supports so it's all level, and not sitting on the ground. and they look more like dug into the ground than sitting on...

My questions refers to the rotting of wood in soil and the sinking in that could occur if not put on something harder like gravel, stones or bricks... Looks built to last so I was wondering.

yeah too much work though the posts are cedar and treated so they won't rot as easy, and that area is pretty dry too so I think it'll be ok for a few years
