well I played with mine over and over again for a year. originally I ran a sts like you have.. didn't like it for the same reason you do. So I tensioned it off feel and it actually worked quite well... mind you it was a pain to get originally but it lasted for a decent length of time.. then with chain stretch and other factors the chain became loose started falling off etc. however if i removed a half link it was too tight. so I put the sts back on... realized I hated that tensioner because I had to keep re-setting it so i bought a tension seeker two (actually the day i got to ottawa) and have loved it so far. no negative feedback. I di have to re- set it once. but that was just because of initial chainstretch. the roller is also wide enough to accomodate a KMC single speed chain which comes in a variety of colours. Another thing i liked is that the rollers actually had teeth unlike the sts which made it pedal smoother... was that enough of a reason ?
I can go into more depth
aha yee im so stoked to ride we got like a foot of snow its rediculous
and you dont need to go into more detail bought the tensioner aha
im gunna tak a half link or 2 out and see how it is and maybe ill invest in one at somepoint
