You know eric, i think that Pinkbike must struggle to choose POD's because they want to choose all of your photos but they have to give all the other kak photographers a chance haha
Was that using just ambient lighting?
I'm wondering because the shadows make it look ambient, but the slight motion blur makes it seem like there might be a flash hiding camera left, but then again, it could just be to properly expose it...

Hey, nah, def not just ambient, the sun is directly behind him & would get a silhouette if I didn't use a flash, so ur on the money with the flash cam left... had it in my hand & there is only a slight m-blur on the spokes coz I was on 1/800th
Alright sweet. I should realized that the sun would have made him a silhouette, but I try to avoid doing these kinds of shots as much as possible, so I don't have many examples to check it out against.
Why do you avoid it? I find using the sun as a rim light (this is not the best example of it tho, coz the sun is behind him & doesn't really give a rim light) & flash as a fill gives me the best results on long shots & fisheye.
I get what you're saying, but since I'm currently without a fisheye, the best I have is my wide angle (18mm on an ASP-C sensor), it just doesn't fit in all that well, plus the sun around here is almost always at an awkward angle for almost any jumps or park for some reason.
Aah, & you don't have any remote flashes I take it?
Yeah, don't worry, I also struggle with the sun now & again, but at least my D70 can sync to 1/800th & I have wizards so I can get my flashes in nice & close if I'm not using my fisheye, so solves most problems, otherwise I just try another angle or just go to certain spots at the right time of the day.

Hahaha yes yes, no remote flashes. And syncing to 1/800th is just amazing! For a shot like this, would you just meter for ambient, and just tone it done around 1 stop or so?
Aah, what I normally do is a bit of the strange way round. I don't really meter for anything. Just put my cam on 1/800th so the ambient light is as dark as I can get it, flash on full & then use my aperture to get the flash exposure correct & balance it with the ambient light. I normally only slow my speed down & play with flash intensity when the light gets lower & then the real fun starts.
Haha, yeah I love it & that's with my wizards... on a sync cable I can sync to 1/8000th
D70 is the camera for flash work... some ppl look at me a bit funny when I pull it out & leave the D200, but there's dynamite in that lil puppy.
