i reckon, frame alone with DHX 5.0 would probably retail over £2000 mark, just because theres alot of carbon fibre!...but look what you get....a sick frame!!

hmm that's pretty heavy for carbon fiber, but it is probably cause there aren't many carbon fiber DH frames.

its made out of carbonfiber, so its pretty damn light frame
  • + 4
flag kallu (May 25, 2009 at 13:19)
actually it's not damn light, 3.9kg(8.7lbs) without shock and let's put DHX 5 on it ( .98 lbs (447 g)) it's 4.3kg Smile
  • + 7
flag melonhead1145 (May 26, 2009 at 12:49)
its the same weight as the old DHI but has a much higher strength to weight ratio
  • + 6
flag olaffons (May 27, 2009 at 14:30)
basiclly,DHX 5.0 (coil not air,lenght:240 mm) is 953 g,so its,more around 4,9 kg with the rear shock...
so,it's really a nonsense to say, that this frame is light.
and carbon fiber is not so strong as U think,it's stiff, that's right, but on the other hand it's terribly sensible on mechanical damages caused by crashes, really strong shots etc.
  • + 6
flag melonhead1145 (May 28, 2009 at 2:38)
GT said the only reason they were making this bike was because they wanted a stronger version of the DHi, and this is what they made. they made it out of carbon fibre instead of aluminium because they managed to create a much higher strength to weight ratio (making it stronger at the same weight) but carbon fibre is stupidly expensive so if this ever is released to the public it will very pricey!

Considering its made of carbon fiber I doubt its going to be heavy.

Who cares if it looks chunky, have you ever even looked at a dh frame?

flag dh-kevin-dh (May 25, 2009 at 0:51)
dude its not light at all
but its hella strong
  • + 1
flag rmxfreak (May 25, 2009 at 20:24)
well what is light to you anyways because to different people light means different things like to me light is 30lbs and under because i have a 48lbs bike that's heavy as hell.
  • + 1
flag dh-kevin-dh (May 25, 2009 at 20:43)
yea, thats like a f*cking tank in my book,

the frame weighs in at about 9.6lbs w/ shock
  • + 2
flag phobospwns (May 25, 2009 at 21:39)
I think an overbuilt carbon fiber DH race bike might not be a bad idea, better than an overly light one that might blow up, right?
  • + 0
flag iainc92 (May 26, 2009 at 3:51)
People get the impression carbon fibre is much lighter when its not. To get the same strength as an alu frame and to make one out of carbon fibre it will be just as heavy...
  • + 1
flag lewdawg (May 26, 2009 at 15:54)
why do they make xc bikes from carbon then?
  • + 1
flag iainc92 (May 26, 2009 at 15:59)
because they dont need the strength of a dh bike...
  • + 1
flag lewdawg (May 27, 2009 at 4:28)
you said that an equivalent strength alu bike will weigh the same as the equivalent strength carbon bike, so if they dont need to be as strong why not just make them out of aluminium and save everyone money....anyway, im sure it's not that simple and i dont really want an argument because i dont think either of us really knows what we're talking about? peace.

flag phobospwns (May 28, 2009 at 6:01)
aluminum and carbon fiber do not have the same strength... if you build an al bike and a carbon bike to weigh the same, the carbon bike will be far stronger. Carbon has a better strength to weight ratio.

flag bankturn (May 26, 2009 at 2:37)
theres more going on than a simple single pivot..."All GT full suspension bikes are designed around our patented Independent Drivetrain (ID) system. ID stays active over small bumps with minimal “pedal feedback” – a loss of pedaling efficiency caused by rear suspension compression. That’s because ID isolates the movement of the bottom bracket from the front and rear triangles of the bike, keeping the distance from the seat to the bottom bracket constant. As a result, pedal feedback is all but eliminated. The best part? When you’re pedaling at maximum efficiency, you’ll be able to ride longer and harder."

Marc Baeumont's version of that weighs in at like 36.5 lbs with pedals built up for strength. I'd call that light especially considering it won't snap like a session, socom, or wilson with a weight built sent down a World Cup track.

The weight is on Litter, so don't flame for that.

making bikes out of carbon fibre is still stupid. A aluminium frame is more stronger than one in carbon.

Thing is that carbon fiber is not flexible. So if you make a quite big crash and hit the frame anywere it wont bend. IT CRACKS CONSTANT!

But since the frame is powdercoated it might have a bigger chance.

If your aluminium frame gets into a bad crash it would cause more less scratches or buckles but it wont get destroyed.

See the carbon as a WEAK ROCK.

The engineers on GT made a mistake. Suggest that the pros getting sponsored getting these bikes since they get new ones for free if they break. Otherwise for a random biker with limited money. DO NOT BUY THIS BIKE.

For those with experience should know this. Otherwise i laugh at the most of you people.
