Yes it's common, although i think right hand - back brake is most common.

I would think for bikes with 2 brakes it's 50/50, but in Britain those with a back brake on a DJ/stret bike run it on the right. But we're not counting them anyways...Razz

In my experiences, running your levers closer to the bar on DH runs allows you to have your finger in a more relaxed position "half pulled" without actually riding the brakes. As opposed to having them stretched out and strained to pull the lever = Less cramping

You also have more power in your 'upper'finger, which you only start using halfway the lever-action. This results in less cramping and allowing better modulation.
