i've got a macleod tool(what this has obviously been designed off) and have used it for years. its a very important part of my trailbuilding kit. this however adds a new dimension with an edge around it and the nice little v cut out of the side. less surface contact for tamping- not much- and a better tool for attacking the roots. nice tool, is the handle fibreglass?

Yes and its 10 inches longer than a standard handle for swing power.
