it would be really pushy tho since its pessing in the same angle as the linkage which would probably make it break

That is going to have a weird effect on the shock... in the current pic there will be almost no force on the shock... all on the linkage. Adjust the angles a bit so that more force is through the shock and not directed straight along the top tube. basically what joshinthebox said.
