Its there because when the shifter is on the handlebar, the cable stretches and shifts in the air when doing tailwhips so its hard to pedal for the next jump with a shifted derailuer in a super low gear. With the shifter on the toptube, the cable wont stretch or shift at all so pedaling for the next jump is doable, plus there is more space on the handlebar!

its because hes running a starnut in his topcap so if he ran his shifter on his bar that would be useless, he can barspin and whip as much as he wants without worrying about tangling his cables...

hes got a hydro giro and his front hose is routed through his head tube. looks sweet. its a good idea having it down there then he got no worries at all about cables tangeling up Smile

You're right, indeed. It's a hydraulic gyro made by AtomLab called the Hydro Twist (http://www.atomlab.com/brakehydro.html).
