Lol. Come on guys! You do ride bikes don't you? Comfort does not mean nothing to me if by that you mean you gonna get just as fat and you won't be able to get any because of your condition. Oh, sorry, I forgot you said you wanted to save time. So what are you gonna do with it, may I ask? For me is not so more going from A to B but traveling itself. Please do note that when you ride your bike it is also possible to go from A to X, which is the unknown and is far more exciting. So you guys want to expend a fortune just to get fat and dull? Just do it. A good performing body is free of charge though. I am not very strong, but I refuse being a f*ggot.

just one thing, X is a variable and A and B arent? imo, B is just as exciting as X.
  • - 3
flag smeckma (Sep 20, 2009 at 0:33)
It is rather the other way around. "A" and "B" are variables of "X" whereas "X" is the unknown proper (you cannot call "X" a variable if you don't know its value). Places still to discover are far more exciting than the ones you already know,so "A" and "B" cannot be just as exciting as "X" can it? This mathematical rule will imply traveling is far more exiciting too when you don't know where you're actually heading for. Please do note that the evidence this mathematical rule brings forward lies boundaries in between the "traveler/adventurer" and mere "tourists", who are usually willing to come back home from the very same moment they step into unchartered territories. Moreover, the traveler/adventurer might not be willing to return home after all as he tends to blend in where he doesn't belong. What are you?

B can be an unknown...
  • - 3
flag smeckma (Sep 20, 2009 at 12:35)
No it can't as it has a given a value: "B" can only be a variable of X. Take for example the following rule. P ¬ Q where ¬ is a casual conector in between P and Q. This mathematical axiom only states that whenever P takes place, Q will follow. As it stands, this axiom is only a general statement about likely events. Here both P and Q are mathematical "unknowns". P and Q could become valiables though, but only if you put content in it. The statement "if it rains the pavement will get wet" can be translated into variables in that axiom so that it can tell us something about something (in this case that if it rains it will all get wet). The letters in the statement R ¬ W, where R stands for "it rains" and W for "it is wet", can therefore be taken as variables in P ¬ Q.

Sorry guys, but you can't be for real can you? I am a professional philosopher (by this I mean I've got a degree and all): you simply don't stand a cat in a hell's chance of proving me wrong. The difference in between a mathematical unknown and a variable is whether you actually know its value or not. Mathematical unknowns do usually appear on axioms whereas variables do rather belong in the calculus or reckoning of numbers itself. "B" cannot be an unknown just because we know what its value is. In this case it stands for "Barcelona". So going from A to B, means going from Aberdeen to Barcelona, which is kind of a nice trip isn't it? Did you guys know that Barcelona is probably one of the coolest of Europe’s slums to ride your bike in? The reason we say it is either "A" or "B" when we work their values out is to shorten it up a bit so that it won't take as much space as you put them down on a piece of paper. You guys think you still want to come in for more? I am only asking out of curiosity: I am amused now.

flag sherbet (Oct 25, 2009 at 16:04)
You'd think a philosopher of all people would realize that a title is moot compared to what's being said. Don't flaunt it, because it'll come back and bite you in the ass.

A variable is a variable, it doesn't matter what it's representation is. I learned that in grade school.

Of course I do care about the environment, but this is not where I am coming from. The only two things I do care in this life are "pleasure" and "comfort". Many people think comfort has plenty to do with having pots of money, but "comfort" could mean a "good performing body" as well. If you feel ok with your body and no pain is causing grieve, then you are a happy person with no regards to how much money you might have in the bank. This is not to say money is not important, as you will probably need some to pay for tuition fees, food and the like, but just that there are other ways. Some times people get mad at me when I say these things. I remember one lady who said to me in one occasion she would give up on happiness as a whole if "being happy" meant she had to go through what I wanted her to; but the point is, if you are happy, what do you care?

But I just can't help it it's so much fun to me. We can't always do the right thing. If we try to argue that, we can just say that instead of anything that we do for ourselves we could be working those hours to make and then give away money to society and starving children.

Best time I had in my life was when I was living in Morocco (for six years). They're just so rich you wouldn't believe it. Food is gorgeous and people are very friendly and talkative. I used to wake up late in the morning, then head for the Spanish school where I was teaching (A levels), and after everything was done, go down to a local café I was familiar with to sing a couple of songs with some friends and be naughty. I used to live by the sea, and I still remember those brawny old fishermen (no spring chickens they were, most of them well past their 60s) doing their nets ashore and making fun of us foreign youngsters because of our chronic tiredness. One day I came up and asked one of them whether they would never get tired doing what they were doing, but only for one of them to stand up and reply: "what are you saying, I am only 75, that is, a man in his prime: you come a little bit closer son and I'll wipe your nose". For me it is not like I've given up on cars as if I had made a decision on it, but rather, that I've found myself doing what I am doing and wondering how I came into it. When I came over to the UK, five years ago, it was a little bit like I was all broke and I needed something to get me around town, so I bought myself a bike. Then I got fit, then I did improve, and then better and better; and then it was like I was riding my bike all over the whole mountain and breaking them too. All food I eat is spot on and my body hurts because of how active I am, but this is a good pain (I reckon) and I feel pretty comfortable with it. Not that I've got pots of money now, but I am very well to do, so to speak, and I could pretty much afford a car for myself. But what for? I am sorry I have to say this: but I don't want to give up on feeling good with myself (nor on all the women there is, speaking of which, do love me so). This comfort I shall never give up on. I swear it.

For me it is rather the damage being caused to the body, and not so more done to the environment (not that this isn't important). About off-road mountain biking being banned in the UK, I think we coming to it. In my local spot, they've put walls and other obstacles to prevent downhill riders from damaging the surroundings (this is what they say), but it is true it is impossible to fight against Mother Nature. Have you guys seen that documentary about all humans dying and all plants taking over from us? I only got into moto a couple of years ago. Never even rode a motorcycle before that. Of course we saw dirtbikers at our mountian riding the fire road and we always looked down on them and thought what abunch of lazy asses they were for having a "motor". Then I did my first enduro race...4 hours later, it was the hardest thing from a physical, cardion, and endurance thing i ever did...and i raced XC back in the day. Those that have not done the enduro moto before you would understand, but coming from me, an mtb guy like you, dont make the mistake at dismissing it as non active. It's actually much more demanding than mtb. Think about this...a DH run 5 minutes of going fast and working your bike the whole time. Your whole body is working, and you're spent. An enturo race...3 hours...non stop, and it's basically a DH run the whole time. Just another point of view. I respect both sports now.
