Kind of resembles a small block.

Only if the Small Block took Enzyte, the natural male enhancement.

why

flag seraph (Oct 14, 2009 at 16:52)
Most people put knobbier tires in the front and slicker tires in the back.

flag one25forlife (Oct 14, 2009 at 16:52)
ya more grip up front

flag daaneel (Oct 14, 2009 at 16:53)
i like mine in the back; more traction for pedalling and braking

Well if you put the Small Block in the front your front end will wash out.

I'm guessing daaneel doesn't like to turn.

I doubt one of these new Weirwolfs will wash out.

im saying sb8 in the front or back you will wash out
can u tell me the advantages of knobbier in front or back? i might have my setup wrong...

if you have a slicker tire in the back, theres less rolling resistance and pedaling feels smoother on hard surfaces, it doesn't matter all that much if your rear tire is drifting as long as the front is tracking.

i guess i might change my setup then

Actually I prefer to have my rear tire get less traction so that I can better maneuver the rear end of my bike through rough sections. Like patmcc says, it only really matters if your front tire has traction.

just look at any tire that has both a front a rear specific tread. The maxxis DHR(r for rear) is not as grippy and has a longer ramp than the DHF.

Actually, luckxc, Maxxis themselves said that the "F" and "R" designations had nothing to do with "front" or "rear." In fact, I see most people running Minion DHFs front and back.

daaneel, the Minion DHF and Minion DHR are not downhill-specific tires. They come in a variety of sizes and casings, from 2.35 folding to 2.5 steel bead. I used to use them for muddy XC.

wow, really? yeah i know everyone is running DHF front and rear.. I just thought it was for the extra grip (think how some people run directional tires backwards) since the main hill here is loose soil. I didn't know they weren't front/back specific.. why would they name them like that then!
I'm still not convinced.

"The Minion DHR features ramped knobs, like the DHF, but the channels in the knobs are designed for braking and accelerating." -maxxis.com

so it really is for the rear...

It also states that the dhf is good for either end but it's also good paired with a dhr in the rear.

It still doesn't say "Minion DHR REAR" or "Minion DHF FRONT" anywhere, does it? So no, they are not front/rear specific. Just like the Weirfolf isn't a front or rear specific, even though I've always felt that it performed better as a front.

i would never use a DHR in the front, its only ever recommended as a rear tire
  • + 1
flag seraph (Oct 16, 2009 at 12:41)
My point is that the DHR and DHF are not front and rear specific tires, never mind what anyone would usually use them for.

flag luckxc (Oct 17, 2009 at 9:09)
I think they were originally front/rear specific but since the dhf caught on so well for both front and rear they decided to change it up... the naming gives that away.

I'd agree that the DHF is not front specific, but i would disagree that the DHR is not rear specific

Direct from Maxxis.com: "Directional ramped knob design - front or rear "

flag luckxc (Oct 18, 2009 at 7:53)
but ask yourself this: would you run a DHR in the front?
  • + 1
flag seraph (Oct 18, 2009 at 8:34)
Yeah, I would. If I had a DH bike and it was perpetually wet around where I live, I would run a 2.5 DHR front and back.

most people run DHF front and back cuz they rack faster than a DHR, AND you can get extra loose!
