From the picture creator: "Photoshop is a matter of creativity, I took both images, literally, they are both my photos that I captured, my copyrights, and created an artistic piece to display to the world of mountain biking. It's intent was not to be determined as real or fake, its art, only to ask, do you like looking at it? Do you say 'cool' when you do look at it? Does it make you want to go ride your bike? If you said yes to any of these, then this photo I consider a successful image, nothing more... so I hope you like it beyond whether it's real or not, it a matter of passion for riding... Cheers"

It is a picture of Danny spliced into a scenery shot.

I think some people haven't heard of the god-on-a-bike that is MacAskill, the rider isn't superimposed and this pic is just straight up awesome, the watermark is very well done too!

This picture doesn't make me want to ride though, the consequences of me trying to ride them poles would be hysterical [for onlookers] and painful [for me], as my trials ninja skills are entirely non-existent!Razz

Evrybody who wrote the word "photoshopped" is screamin "I have no clue of photography!!!" Really, I think that this is not Claytons first Photo and he knows what he is doin just bacause of the fact he is shootin with Macaskill. Everybody who uses the p-word under a pic like this disrespects the work and creativity that Clayton put into getting a great pic like that.
First: If you guys ever heard about a DSLR, you shoult know that they produce resoulutions way over 10 Mpixel. So even a Photoshop newby could cut in a riders almost black siluette and nobody will ever see that on a lo-res compressed Pinkbike POD.

SecondBig Grinanny is ridin white spokes on his rear wheel, so no he has not been cut into the background. Btw this seems to me pretty easy terain in comparison to the stuff he rides in his clips.

Third: the size of the rider is just fine in comparison to the building (ever heard of perspective??)

So the only thing that I could imagine that Clayton did to this pic is a color correction and maybe blurring out the water / combining a long exposed pic with a snapshot of danny.
Please think before you write...

  • + 1
flag tonelli86 (Nov 13, 2009 at 8:14)
if that is really true, I apologize. So its definately a shame to Clayton. Faking images has become so easy... For me, this pic instantely changed from a great shot to a poor fake. Pretty sad. And sorry for my harsh word again. I just cant belive that someone puts so much work in gettin his name on a pic (ok, its not that much work), that he didnt really take by himself.
I wonder if he even shot the background by himself or just stole it from google.

Yeah, Danny was in Vegas. How do I know? Because he stopped by the Atomlab/DMR booth a few times and hung out. Weather or not Danny was photoshopped into the picture or not, the very fact that there is a watermark 100% proves that the photo was run through photoshop.

Apparently it was openly admitted that this was a faked photo. It was done not to prove ones skill, but for it being art. So I respect it as that. It is an awesome photo weather it be fake or real. He should enter this in the fake photo contest going on over at www.plussizebmx.com

flag MooMoo2323 (Nov 13, 2009 at 9:22)
it looks like the outdoors shot, including the water, was a time elapsed shot: one exposure over a long amount of time. so, the effect on the water is all the ripples blurred together to create that texture. then he superimposed the rider on one of the poles--cutting the rider out of some other picture and pasting it on this. the debate on whether or not photoshopping is art compared to actual photography is tough. photography is supposed to capture beauty and intrigue found naturally in the world. photoshop, when used to help a photograph out is ok and can bring out its best. but when photoshop is used to create an entirely new image, which has be done here, is not ok and can not be respected as much as a REAL photograph can. though the image (not photograph) is still art and can still be interesting to look at (which is why i'm ok w/ this being POD), but the author should always admit that it's an image and not a photograph, so the right amount of respect can be given.

Wicked background... but I gotta say you would no lean back that far. The only way you would be leaning like that and not falling if your front end was really dipping down. In this photo the front tire is high up + rider far back = wheel slipping and falling.

I say - this is an outrage for it to be a POD!

To all who believe this is art.

If you call it art then I guess you are one of those who believe that art is anything - you draw or paint whatever as an adult or at least a teenager, then post it on their fotoblog or digart and call yourself an artist. Basicaly you are putting this photomontage here not far from pieces of art created by artists. This is a simple set of two or more pictures, put together without any bigger thought or craftmanship in it, that without any logical reason has been promoted to be a POD.

Well I tell you my friends, you eat the bullbraaap that art galeries and art promotors fed the world with since 1950s and make it believe that some junkie painting a toilet with mustard is an artist. If they say that a couple of pieces of crap are pieces of art, then they are finaly going to find a looser that will buy one of these, for huge amount of money. Their small investment will bring them pretty nice shared income. Then there came the era of tolerance, internet with digart, fotoblogs etc. or bunch of well trained teenagers on a reality show moving as if they were paraplegic and that's "the art of dancing!" Suddenly everyone is an artist! Popoculture wants us to believe that you don't need to train and excel yourself to be an artist. No more struggle! No more sleepless nights in ateliers! Everyone can be an artist! ...just buy these clothes or this phone where you can upload you artwork and share it with your friends!

So please do yourself and a mankind a favor and don't spread that bullbraap forward, don't call things like this art, because then what is Picasso's painting, Pavarottis singing or Russian balet?

WAKI, seriously, are you tripping.

Art evolves over time, mediums change. Picasso is still art, as is pavarotti and the ballets. But at the same gesture modern music can still be called art if created electronically, and digital photography is just another form of art.

I don't claim to be an expert or an artist, but I enjoy taking photos as a hobby, and I would personally regard this as a piece of art. Ok its not on the same scale as the greats. But my local bands are not the same as metallica, but they are still musicians(artists).

So hop down from your high horse, and accept that, anyone can be an artist, but not everyone can be as succesful as the leaders in their field.

wangs14 - ever heard of art of argumentation? Big Grin pssst... some call it retorics.

chudders22 - I guess I was tripping indeed, too much anti cough syrups... I hold on to my point though - a man must deliver something well thought and elaborated in order to call it a piece of art, otherwise it's just a photomontage, graphic or... and yes art evolves what is natural but recently it mostly regresses. Whaevea...

the shot without the rider is art, with the rider shopped in is art with a bit of slap stick & ruins the shot for me. 2 images merged creatively is art, putting a rider in a shot to make it appear as if he's riding the scene is not creative...so not art IMO. You may have a different view though.

flag WAKIdesigns (Nov 14, 2009 at 3:17)
I blindly stepped on the very slicky ground called: what is art... so i guess I'm screwed... however if you Eric didn't smash me here, I might be ok Wink

In my job I work a lot with photorealistic photomontages like pasting renders of nonexisting buildings into photos of current site situation, sometime when the buidling to be torn down is still there. I have nothing against the guy who posted it, I don't want to dis him for that, everyone can post whatever they want (as long as it concerns biking Wink )

I just get annoyed to see people gloryfying a poor job. I get even more annoyed to see that some are refering to higher virtues, like calling it an art. It's like Paris Hilton talking about God... I have some bad pictures of me riding badly in the woods - how many would be happy if that turned out to be a POD?

I come from creative background so I se it as one of my duties to protect the good name of art (and of POD Wink )

haha, nah, I kinda agree with you in a way.
The unfortunate thing I'm realizing that there are very few ppl that feel the same & can see properly or understand anything about photography or photographic art. This is also not the best place to fight about it either as I've learned.
From this composite I can see the photographer has a good eye to get the bg image & was just probably having a bit of fun, made the composite & someone chose it as POD & now the poor guy is just getting shit about a bit of fooling around. I think it's pinkbike that needs to get someone who knows both about riding & photography to choose the PODs, to me it seems rather random at the moment. Anyway, it's just 1 POD out of quite a few good ones lately, so...

not to cause controversy, but like you can all say whatever you like about it being photoshopped, yet it took some imagination to piece this image together, fake or not its still an amazing image.
secondly whether it be two images into one or jsut a basic touchup, pretty much every POD will ahve been photoshopped in one way or another. whether theyve stitched pictures or balanced the levels, they will ahve still been altered via photoshop.

In my personal opinion the fact that this image is photoshopped does not take anything away from how much i like it and how much it makes me want to ride.

You know....Photoshop is a great tool for fixing and mixing images...I think the shape and format of POD's has to change from real rider on real ground only, to mixed photo designs too, granted it'll change the entity of POD's alot, the market and onslaught of people using photoshop to make cool images is now mainstream..why not have a rider doing something that is possible or next to not impossible, and still make it look like its possible, if you have the skills to develop a sweet looking image that is photoshopped with a rider/riders and bikes/bike thats great! PODs should be pictures that have BIKES, RIDERS, OR BIKE INFLUENCE that connect with the sport we all love, it shouldnt have to be "does this look real, or its a fake shot" who cares...in the end IT LOOKS COOL and has content that has to do with BIKING! thats what should make a great POD!!! not if the image is real or fake

CHEEERS...

Oh and the Image is cool!

you are a dummy! Every photo taken by professional photographers is photoshoped. colours, levels, saturation, noise reduction and sharpness is all done with photoshop or some other program. When you shoot images in RAW you don't have a choice. A RAW photo has to be "developed" and Photoshop is the darkroom of digital photography. Even film photos can be tricked, touched-up and altered in a real darkroom in case you didn't know.

Yeah sometimes photos are altered in photoshop and that's fine! It's art! Enjoy it!!

flag ericpalmer (Nov 13, 2009 at 17:17)
Doing colours, levels, saturation, noise reduction and sharpness is not quite the same as cutting a rider out & putting him into a landscape shot, but agree with you to just enjoy it.

flag mitch133 (Nov 13, 2009 at 17:23)
no dude printing in a darkroom has limits where photoshop dosnt if photoshop waslike a darkroom it would be ok but its not its much more its making a picture look sureal and bending realtiy touching up is one thing making unreal is another thats a whole diffent kinda of art its almost like drafting but its far from photography which is where you use the CAMREA to make art

Whilst I love this Image, I would use it as a desktop background, or have a big print on my wall, its not what I feel is the spirit of a POD. The use of photoshop to rebalance the colours, or edit the image in any way that does not affect the scale of the subject (or falsely create a subject) is fine by me. But this is not in the spirit of POD imo. Fanastic image but not POD.

It is definately a beautiful shot, however I dont like the fact that he was never there riding that. I believe it was succesful as an art piece but from a rider's stand point it is a bit disheartening. Should we expect to see more "fake riding" in the POD area? I hope not, Picture of the day is not necessarily a massive honour but on a biking website I expect the riding to be genuine. If you want to produce art there is devientart and shit like that for you.

This is completely fake and photo shopped. I've been to this place in Britannia Beach close to Squamish, beside the house they filmed Free Willy. The shack is extremely warn down and could likely collapse any second. I also believe that though from this angle the posts seem very close together but they are not actually this close. I can not say for sure but I doubt that they are even close enough to jump from one another. I would also say that the water being time lapsed is not part of the photo used of Danny Macaskill, also that the lighting on the shack and the posts doesnt even line up with the rider. Photo shopping should never be used in this way especially used in this way to be considered art. I would also like to say that this is an insult to Danny Macaskill in my eyes, he has the skills to make photos like this real so why must you create fake ones?
  • + 1
flag ebehn (Nov 13, 2009 at 18:16)
And the reasoning for the Water would likely be because the "editor" could not properly place the "reflection" of the rider.
