It looks to me like your riding on Cyrptobionic soil. Those bacteria and fungi are what keep the environment in the moab area alive. Respect the bike mecca of moab and stay off of the soil.
Pavenger^^First of all have you ever heard of shadows? And its Cryptobiotic soil, If you were such an expert on what it looks like you might actually know how to spell it.
It's too tough to tell what the makeup of the soil is considering the contrast in that area of the picture. No need to pontificate about sustainable trails when you don't have enough info to confirm what you think you see. That being said, I appreciate it when a young buck has concern for an issue that should be important to all trail users. That is RARE on PB.
I was kind of thinking that the shot would be better with a flash on the left to lighten up the shadows, but I guess that would take the "natural"-ness out of the photo...

moab wouldn't be the bike mecca that it is if everybody stayed off the soil. the man's on a trail, not ripping untouched terrain. go cry a river to trek, they organised the launch.
if you actually read what pavenger wrote, it says 'cyrptobionic soil' acutally he spelled it wrong( its cryptobiotic), but do you even know what that is? not all the dirt in moab is that type. and if you've ever seen a photo shoot, a lor of times they make their own trails.
I'm glad to see one person in the whole of pinkbike who sees where I'm coming from. I am by no means a tree hugger but it's just outof respect for my favorite place to ride on this earth. And yeah, my bad on the spelling, I've been up all night studying and it gets a little hard to type on my iPod at times
Sweet deal brule. Sorry for jumping to conclusions off of not mch info but as I'm sure you've seen as well, far too many people go trail blazing in Moab.
Jimby, it's not simple dirt. Inside the dirt lives a delicate eco-system which helps neighboring plants and organisms currently in the dirt by helping stop erosion, and improve water retention. And it's not only found in the U.S. in fact cryptobiotic soil can be found on every continent!
Trampling this dirt can cause twice as much water run off, cause 6x more dirt erosion, takes 5 years for it to visually recover, 50 years for the crust to rise to it's former state, and 250 years for the lichens and moss to grow again. It's real delicate shit!
Wow, that sounds pretty easy to mess up! No wonder you dont apprecieate people tearing trails into it. I meant no offence with my comment, but it was a little ignorant of me. At least i know now. Every day's a school day!!
Thanks for the explination and not for just letting rip with insults like a lot of people seem to do on here. It must make trail building in certain places a bit of a nightmare!
At least the guy in this photo isn't messing with the delicate stuff. So its still a damn fine piece of riding and photography!
