i've seen the xt cranks on 83mm bb shells before, but is there enough surface on the non driveside of the axle to mount them safely?

Yes, I ground down my axle spacer to 1mm thick to let the crankset clear the BB. I'll take a pic of it today so you can understand... and the nondrive crank
