they're a pretty usual thing at most camera shops. it's a joby gorilla pod. definitely a great thing to have availible. in this case, used as an extra expension for my flash on its' ettl cable. also good for an low-to-the-ground shots, because it'll lay completely flat. even if you don't have a ballhead (the $40 one that you can get with the pod looked pretty good for it's price), you can still bend the legs to shoot portrait. and you can wrap the legs around objects, which can come in handy for placing a flash up above in the trees, or the camera for that matter if you have a remote shutter. get the slr-zoom model for $40. it supports most weighty cameras. i don't think the $100 version with metal hardware is worth it...
