I think that it's some protective stuff because of the uplifting issues....he doesn't want his fork ugly and scratchy even if he's sponsored Smile

it might also be apart of the timing system used. During the World Cup they all had little red sensors on there forks which activated and stopped the timing system for there race runs to be accurate. Might be something similar.
