this surface prep, along with gripping compound applied to the stem reduces the required torque reducing the pressure on the bar and reducing liklihood of damaging the bar.
its common practice on road bikes and carbon seatposts.

pretty clever, but doesnt reducing the torque make the bolts more liable to come loose? u could just use a tub of threadlock tup

if you dont check your stem bolts regularly anyway your asking for trouble!
the bolts on the syntace stem come with thread lock already applied and i have some on my thompson.
