Photo of the Day on Mar 11, 2011 - more PODs
Selected by Ian Hylands - This shot has been on the site for a while now and is only just making it to POD, sometimes that happens. I've shot this spot at Sea Otter a lot of different ways, but I really like the creativity Adrian brings to it in this shot. Great composition, awesome perspective, and I love the use of focus as a compositional element. And the exploding dirt is really cool as well...

People seem to be complaining there's not enough variety with the PODs lately, but then when they get something unique they say it's not POD worthy. Doesn't have to be some sick trick, creativity counts, at least that's the way I see it anyway...

you are right eldavo! But I wonder: was the shot actually made with a lensbaby (which creates this effect out of the cam) and was aimed to look that way - or did the photographer just think "let's try to pimp this with some photoshop"

1 would be really creative, 2 not so much...

i really like this shot, but i think i would like it more if he had used a faster shutter speed to freeze the dirt a little more - although the blurriness does give a nice feeling of motion... and the highlights are kind of blown out - would be nice to see more detail in spokes etc - otherwise sick shot and PODPODPOD!
  • + 1
flag IanHylands Mod Plus (Mar 11, 2011 at 11:11)
If you looked at the exif info you would notice that it was shot at 1/5000, that's almost as fast as you can get with a normal camera. The dirt is frozen, the look is from the blur of the lens...
  • + 1
flag bizyclayz (Mar 11, 2011 at 14:38)
cool ! never noticed all the exif tech info there - wow that is a fast shutter speed - that must be some really fast moving dirt - never seen a tilt-shift do a radial kind of blur like that , how does it do that? usually you see the DOF "line" blur across the frame in more linear fashion... sorry for the noob questions! I'm a pro video editor but relatively new to photography... cheers!

That is scary, looking at the Exif info in the actual image Peter Le is listed as the artist. This has brought up an interesting point for me in that we should be taking the info from the actual copyright field and not the artist field. I'll have this changed. This still doesn't explain how it got into the image though...

  • + 5
flag RabbyT (Mar 11, 2011 at 8:14)
 Why?

There are many reasons where photoshopping isn't just artistic, but also necessary. It's a fact that DSLR cameras don't give the same picture as old-style SLR so (nearly) every picture you see in magazines/on website etc will be photoshopped at least to a minor extent.

The other point is that why should is it bad to photoshop? It could be argued that it requires just as much artistic talent as the photography itself?

[/controversy]

For what it's worth I think the picture is awesome, whether it's been shopped or not. It looks great, therefore I like it.

  • + 1
flag IanHylands Mod Plus (Mar 11, 2011 at 20:06)
That's a great idea, I like it. There still has to be other input though, as there are quite a few POD's that receive less than 25 views initially, let alone 25 favs... Some great photographers on this site just don't have very many friends to view their stuff, and no friends on PB means no views and no favs...
  • + 1
flag CurtDB (Mar 11, 2011 at 20:48)
Thanks! Well in retrospect it would be better if there wasn't a number limitation on the Vote for POD button. All photos should have the button added. Also the results of the vote don't have to solely dictate if the photo becomes POD or not. It could just be another way to measure up photos. Just because someone Fave's a picture doesn't necessarily mean they think it should be POD.

  • + 1
flag IanHylands Mod Plus (Mar 11, 2011 at 19:26)
Vaseline or hairspray on your lens (on a filter please, not directly on the lens) will give you a softer or distorted look, but this was done with a tilt shift lens or a lensbaby. Without any info I'm going to go with tilt shift because the camera info actually says it's a 50mm and a lensbaby usually shows up as blank.

flag downhillnews (Mar 11, 2011 at 20:24)
Yeah looks like a Tilt/Shift shot. Or duplicate layer and use blur effect and then mask, and use gradient tool at about 20%?
  • + 1
flag IanHylands Mod Plus (Mar 11, 2011 at 23:03)
Except that I know Adrian and he has shot a bunch of stuff like this, not photoshopped it. And that would have to be two different layers probably, one with radial blur then another with surface or gaussian blur... You'll notice that there is some definite radial looking blur going on, I know my lensbaby does that...
