 What you are seeing is that the photographer used a flash unit. Because the source of the flash isn't exactly in line of view with the lens (on top of the camera), there is an off-set shadow casting on the dirt. He also corrected the exposure to the bike (which leaves the background slightly darker, farther away from the flash) hence why it looks the way it does.
