 yes and yes.
the suspension doesn't effect chain tension because of the pivot point is within the bottom bracket.
and this bike originally sold with gears on it..
all you need to do is take the spacers off, add a cassette and derailleur, shifter, cables and housing

 does that work as a single speed or does it get loose when the suspension goes down

 it pivots around the bottom bracket so the chain stays perfectly tight the whole time
