Selected by Ian Hylands - I haven't seen a lot of nice natural forest shots lately, and this one really stood out. I like the composition with the ground on the bottom right, rider nice and flat above on the third. And I like the out of focus bits on the left, they help draw you to the right side and also balance it. The light is great, and this shot makes me want to go ride my bike...
Congratulations on winning comment of the day! Unfortunately, the award is less than prestigious and was selected by another unappreciative fool like yourself, leaving plenty of room for your winning comment to be flawed.
Firstly, Photo of the Day is an emphasis on photography. If the picture was fantastic and involved riding in any way, shape, or form, it would be qualified. Obviously you have no appreciation for photography; you should know, however, that it is an art form. Mr. Highlands and all of the photographers who have won and will win PoD are ARTISTS.
Secondly, do you honestly feel you can complain about the riding in this photo? Would you really call that anything but outstanding? If yes, I would love to see you attempt it and impale yourself on an out of focus branch right on a perfect third.
Nice comments, all taken in, but i tend to focus on the poise, and talent of the riding in the picture more often than the surroundings its in, yes ill agree a lot of the time, the surrounding add to the proportiation i.e. the size of the rider compared to the section of track he/she is riding, natural beauty of the place, and intensity of the riding i.e. speed etc, but without decent riding there can be no point to a pod, but I say this is a well worthy P.O.D, extremely flat and well pulled of table, and ill agree, very epic background
when did pinkbike become so logical, and mature? Or are we just pretending to be that in order to not look like idiots?? I say be idiots!!! and let ourselves say, this pod is sick!! instead of something along the lines of: well if you look precisely in the lefternmost corner at the unfocused bifocal tree perpetuated in midair, you can see that this shot exhibits quite outstanding pixilation from the riders perspective." from the perspective of a photographer that is really a 12 year old kid likes to "jump bikes". I guess if pinkbike is really getting smarter, well than, so be it. But I miss the stupid ass comments from a long time ago, they were hilarious.
okay anyways lol, I can't believe i am being such a hypocrite, but i don't like the composition of this pod. it does a good job with the out of focus triangle part of the picture that points to the right as far as getting you eyes focused to the rider, but its not all about the rider. its about the big picture, and the way that the trees run vertically off of the picture take your eyes away from the center of the picture. Nothing draws your attention to the left corner bottom though or top left corner. and that leaves you feeling lopsided. i think ultimately, it would have been nice to do something there a little more fun, whether it was a branch that led back from the other side, or even a silly watermark there, it seems incomplete because of this. The left side should be cropped out leaving a crisp picture and an overall good composition. just my
It's like the 'Tale of Scrotie Mcboogerballs' episode of south park. Don't look into things that aren't there. Just admire it for what it comes across as, a great photo.
cheers.
man this is AWSOME keep it up and Ian Hylands thanks for the useful input on why it is PoD and help developing photographers such as myself to learn from such a pro, so thanks ian!!
will this pod/not pod discussions ever change? i've started visiting pinkbike regularly only a few months ago and this is getting really boring. if you dislike the photo, just stfu. same thing goes in case you like the photo AND feel the urge to type something about erectile dysfunction. DO NOT F****** DO IT.
Its a photo and a good photo. Does everything have to be perfect? It shows good riding and good photography skills. Thats all really. Don't study a photo like your going to get a grade for what you say. Don't make a photo more complicated than it should be! Sick POD man!
I did not comment badly on the P.o.D... Its a nice p.o.d. don't get me wrong. And I ride, i'm not the guy behind the camera on the mountain. I have however givin classes for years and know a thing or two about photography. If you want, I can send you a few of my shots from off the track if you would like me to back up my words.
That has f+ck all to do with austrians. The woods is in Austria. That's it. It is a good Hungarian rider ans a good Hungarian Photograph. Not the woods. Cheers.
chris bee, your way too pretentious and negative, he didn't say that the picture had everything to do with Austrian's as a group of people living in the country Austria. ** THE HILL IS IN AUSTRIA** = AUSTRIAN - HUNGARIAN COOPERATION without 'the woods' you really wouldn't have the photo in its entirety so next time, think, use the brain your parents blessed you with before just mindlessly trying to put somebody else comment down, for no reason.
@FallingEqualsTrying: You have no fokken idea what this is about. so do shut it and stay low. (The hill is the Alps en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alps ) Cheers
@ MBSubsin -i have not claimed that my pics are great or that i am the shit
@gcaprider - i like to read the captions. i was providing only my opinion and constructive criticism, i wasnt bashing it. i commented also saying "thank you for everything you do" ...oh and i think you are a dick.
@darkstar - agree with you, i pesonally would sway for a slightly different point thats all
@themerryprankster- i agree
@kittykiller - i do apreciate the photo and the riding, if you pull your head out of your ass and read my whole comment you might realize that. i do think it is pod worthy, i dont know how you got the idea that i didnt think so. you need to absorb text. i agree and realize that photography is art.
@ ian hylands - i like reading your captions, and agree that is is a worthy pod i am not arguing any of that. i understand that you have a lot to root through. i think it goes without saying that unless one states somthing as a fact it is only to be construed as a single opinion, which i chose to share with you. im not trying to tell you not to write something that i dont care about, its not a big deal. you dont have to read my comment either if you dont want to hahahahahaha
90' degree angling, footing correct also.
You got it correctly.
Great job considering your were probably hauling ass off the mountainside.
Amazing job!

I like this shot, I ride my mountain bike in the mountains and don't do much DJ/street, so this one speaks to me. Well done, nice artistry with the shot too by the way.
geez idk about all of you but the stuff some people say on the internet sometimes make me wish i could just crawl down the cable line all the way to a different country and whoop the shit out of some shithead, in a jay and silent bob sorta way. anyone else ever feel like this
If you don't like the photo, don't look at it. You're either a troll, incredibly stupid, have no clue, or, suffering from some sort of mental disability, perhaps all the above, and, no offense if you are. bet you wouldnt say that to my face punk.
id like to start off by saying i like this pod, i think its a good choice.
of course a photo with good composition is nice, but we are all riders. i think that the primary quality of EVERY p.o.d. should be outstanding riding, and a good feel for what is actually relavant to what is going on with the riding.
this part of the ians critique i really could give a shit about" I like the composition with the ground on the bottom right, rider nice and flat above on the third. And I like the out of focus bits on the left, they help draw you to the right side and also balance it." to me it would be much more important to see more of the run out of the jump or the take off or something. rather than a blurry branch that "help(s) draw you to to the right side and also balance it." ... im not here for a photography class.
that said i understand that there are alot of photographers on this site and that photography is an important part of the promotion of our sport.
I think the daily commentary on why a photo is POD is a great addition and does a fantastic job stopping the various "hurrrh why is this POD" comments.
Obviously the PODs that Ian selects will contain some commentary on the composition - he's a professional photographer.
I think its useful, it explains why that photo is better than others similar. No one forces you to read that comment after all. And about seeing jump or take off, that is your comment on photo and to photographer not to Ian.
I think that Ians captions are on point, I enjoy them. You also dont have to read them if you dont want, which is cool. Im not a photographer, although I took some classes in high school- so Im familiar with basic composition and the rule of thirds. So I do enjoy reading his caption to see how those things worked or didnt - to make for a really good shot.
What are you here for, if not a photography class? Why are you being so negative? Have you ever heard of constructive criticism? A professional photographer takes time out of his day to critique a photo for a website, and you bash it. If you don't like what he has to say, simply refrain yourself from reading it. If you don't like the photo, don't look at it. You're either a troll, incredibly stupid, have no clue, or, suffering from some sort of mental disability, perhaps all the above, and, no offense if you are.
It is what it is, be thankful we have a free site to enjoy mostly awesome photos on a daily basis.
me too but i dont like it when he goes "i dont realy like this picture beccause its a bit dark" even tho in the background theres a sick rider on a sick bike pulling a sick extended superman over a huge jump. bit silly he should be consentrating on what the rider is doing not just the lighting, location ect.
Getsomesy, i agree with you 100% And KittyKiller897, if that is your real name, you don't understand. He was not saying the trick was not sick, he is saying that he would like to see a better perspective of the surroundings that are relevant to the trick which would in turn enhance the photographs story and IMO general appeal. And its possible to do so by respecting thirds and playing with the focus and bla bla bla.
Thanks for the comments everyone, if I pick a photo for POD I obviously like it enough to pick it over the 3000-4000 other photos that end up on the site every day, so if I say something that seems a little negative understand that it's a minor thing, intended to give a little insight into what it is that I like about a photo. If you don't like my comments you don't need to read them, just look at the photo. If you look at the photo and wonder why it's POD, read the comment. If you still don't like it, wait til tomorrow, there will be a different POD then that you may like...
fair enough. i do like your comments and they help me as it gives me an insight to a great shot but sometimes you seem to concentrate more on the surroundings and not what the rider is doing. what do you think of this? :http://www.pinkbike.com/photo/6217730/ any good? any tips?
Ian, if i were you, other than your original comment, you dont have to come on and justify the pod again and again, its a waste of your time. People on here (not everybody) are just looking to troll peoples comments proving them wrong or simply being negative for no reason (if you don't like the pic, don't comment, go to school or work, or be useful),Everybody else just spitting out verbal diarrhea and being way WAY overly pretentious should get job's/girlfriend/go bike/family/stop constantly refreshing the pod so you can retort to someones comment, or say you don't want to know about thirds, or say that it has nothing to do with austrians because only the hill is austrian. . .I am rambling now, but i feel someone had to say this, Ian keep on doin what your doing, general disclaimer for anybody who does not agree with pod, ignore it! wait until tomorrow, life does not happen on a computer screen.
"... life does not happen on a computer screen." well put. i read these comments to find out more about the location, photograph, rider, etc. most of the time there's a lot of scrolling through pissing contests between people that have never met. i'm sure if you guys go out for a few rides together you'll be a lot less aggro. anyways, i've got a collection of bike magazines from way back in the early 90's that i've kept because of awesome photos that captured the moment, reason, trend, super awesomeness of riding. Ian's comments on how the photos are taken, how they are composed, edited, framed etc are great because as an observer of the product you don't always get that other side. thanks ian. keep it up. when the trigger button on my little nikon D60 DSLR wears out, it'll be in thanks to you. cheers.

but who all associates my name with stupid comments?
and by the way
Grat Balázs!
Probably not with so much awesomeness though.
Actually love this picture. Top choice on POD today!
