Photo of the Day on Mar 20, 2011 - more PODs
Selected by Ian Hylands - The first thing that struck me about this photo is the rider's position. It looks like he's going off a small drop on a trail that is winding around the side of the hill, yet he still managed to put a decent bit of style into it. I like that the focus in the image is split between the out of focus foreground and the in focus subject and background, and that the line of focus is a diagonal top left to bottom right. The line created by the focus helps to make the image more dramatic...

Great depth of field & using it as a lead in - lighting is nicely balanced as well between ambient & flash - great work & props to the rider!

flag IanHylands Mod Plus (Mar 20, 2011 at 14:35)
It's very barely oversharpened, and it may have something to do with the site as well...

I'm still working on the sharpening algorithm, and it really only works well if you upload an image that's big enough... The image uploaded was 1000px, and it's been resized to 800 then sharpened. The same amount of sharpening that would be applied to an image that was 2000 px and resized to 800. If you want the image to look perfect at 800 it needs to be uploaded at 800, then the site will apply no sharpening to it. However the smaller sizes will possibly be a bit oversharpened. As it is now the site is optimized for images that are uploaded at 1600 px.

... still too used on downsizing my pictures to 1000px and uploading them in this size. Hope to improve on that Wink

For more details and sharpnes matters, see the 1600px version posted bellow...

Ian, as I already mentioned in a mail before: How about letting the user decide to not sharpen the image on upload?

flag IanHylands Mod Plus (Mar 20, 2011 at 17:36)
Unfortunately as images are resampled smaller they need to be sharpened or they lose quality very quickly, so the only option would be to not sharpen the largest size. Right now if the image is downsampled more than 5% it gets sharpened, that way when you upload a large image and it's downsampled to 1024, 800, 500, and 250 pixels it looks pretty good at every size. If you want to have no sharpening at the POD size (which is 800 pixels wide), simply upload an image at 800 pixels exactly and it won't be resized or sharpened.

Actually it's the N'dee ("old" single crown FR/DH fork, now replaced by the Idylle SC). It has the same internals and lowers as the regular dual crown DH fork the Idylle, just single crown and lowered to 180mm.

And yeah, lot of people say they are better than Fox, but the DH ones are expensive. The enduro one, the Deville is not that expensive. Same with the shocks, they're not too far from Fox.

I wish I had the money to buy one ^^
