@traildigger94 I respect your personal opinion, but can I ask what part of this is not POD worthy? It's Aaron Gwin, he's doing a sick scrub on his way to winning a World Cup, the composition is pretty awesome, even the spectators are great.

Oh, and he's an American wearing stars and stripes, and today is the 4th of July. But that bits not as important....

And the thing is, look at the advertising behind this pic.. It's Trek! Besides that, in my opinion the pic is not realy mind blowing, but there is action, thats for sure. I'm not in to the photo-tech stuff, but everyone can see this one is not special. right ?

@IanHylands Its because everyone and their mother has an SLR these days and everyone thinks that they are all of a sudden qualified to judge photographs like their pro photographers. I was out taking real photos the other night at the fireworks and i was almost ashamed to pull out my camera gear and be associated with these photographer wannabes.

Agreeably its not like its a work of fine art but it is a great photo nonetheless. The timing and composition require a lot more skill than some of the "judges" on pinkbike are aware of.

yes he won, but it doesnt mean that the POD next day should be a picture of him, yes everything is cool in this pic its sick, but it doesnt have that special feel to it, if you dont know what i mean MR HYLAND then you must be a crappy photographer who has never made a masterpiece photo. Well you can think what you want, as I said before you're entitled to your opinion. However I will tell you that Trek has absolutely nothing to do with the POD selection, they sponsor the page, does that mean you're going to start making accusations anytime one of their riders is in the POD? And Gwin winning yesterday also had nothing to do with the choice of this pic, it was picked more than a few days ago because I wanted something obviously American for the 4th and I happened to really like this shot. If you have a problem with me choosing an American rider as POD for the 4th I understand, and you should probably start crying and complaining about that as well. At least then you'd have a valid complaint.

if anyone actually still cares, one of the main reasons Americans have been overly expressive with their excitement is because for the longest time American downhillers have struggles to keep a consistent podium standing throughout a world cup season.

now that Gwin has emerged as the leading competitor (not just a single american podium, but multiple consecutive wins) this newer hierarchy is starting to instill more a sense of national pride within Americans for seeing such a large quantity of win after almost none at all for years.

we may come off a bit cocky at times with all the "f*ck YEAH USA!" type sayings but just know that given most of our already nationalistic opinions, all these wins from an underdog is really bumping up the pride and its fun to express it.

@IanHylands i understand that yes it is a good shot and all and that timeing and lighting and position is all great i just think that there is quite a few shot of people doing scrubs and i feel that as a picture of the day there should be a little flair or like a boom factor that when you look at it it screams HOLY SHIT ( i also want to put out there that in no way am i on the same page as variis im not trying to put you down as the guy who picked it or the photogragher) p.s. im not at all a photographer and never in a millian years think im a pro photoghrapher or a judge im just saying my opinion.

@ IanHylands. You may have taken a photo of Monica Belucci (unfortunately for you doesn't race dh) who is sitting on a chair wearing casual clothes doing nothing, just sitting on the chair. Without wearing bathing suit or underwear or showing any signs of lust, does it make it a pod. Just because it is Monica Belucci doesn't mean that is going to be always a 'pod' for a fashion magazine (but it should). Believe me Aaron is never going to be that famous.
So it is Aaron Gwin doing his stuff, so what? It's not Guy Martin or Ian Hutchinson nor Conor Cummins, get a life.
Some less famous riders made some huge leaps at the same race but who cares this is about America and Mc Donalds.
So Ian every time that a country has a national celebration post a pod as a tribute.

Mozarle, Aaron is probably already more well know than Connor, or any of the TT boys, no disrespect but this is an mtb site, and Aaron is the greatest out there at the moment after 3 years of racing, that is pretty damn impressive.

The photo is also symbolic, it's 4th of July, and an American is dominating. This is what America likes to do in most arena's, it's more than just what you see, it's what the story it tells.

Im sorry but that kind of makes me sad that there are people out there that are that ignorant and misguided. I love my country and I am proud to have such a strong sense of nationalism. EVERYONE should have pride in where they are from. HOWEVER, no one should discriminate others based on that. Happy 4th! And yes it is a big deal for an american to be on the podium, even more so for them to Convincingly win on a regular basis out of seemingly no where. The coolest thing about this year however is NOT the fact that americans are doing better. Its all the WILD CARDS and the level at which the bar has been raised in world cup downhill. How someone can come from mid pack last race or qualifying and then podium is just baffling and awesome!
