Selected by Ian Hylands - I just like the whole look of this shot. It's a DH shot, and he's flying through the air above a sea of people. With a great old building in the background. There are a few urban DH races in the world every year but this has to be my new favorite urban DH shot. The last one was the shot of Graves that was the Fox ad...
It's cool as the photo is from a spectators view of the rider, but in my opinion this isn't POD worthy, as you can't see the size of the drop/jump the rider is about to do. But hey it's down to others to decide.
OK I'll give my reasons, gladly. I believe the photo is poorly framed because as aesthetically, it feels imbalanced. The things we're interested in here are the big impressive building, and the rider, right? Yeah, the 'sea' of crowd is cool too, but is not enhanced by the closeup of that dude's ear on the right so that side of the photo should be cropped out or just not included in the first place. Also, as a rule of thumb (and I stress that this is not compulsary nor is it always right), but the rider should be riding into the centre of the picture... the way this is framed, he is leaving it (albeit very quickly!) it just doesn't sit right with me. Finally, the exposure. OK so I'll hold my hands up and admit that it is definitely emphasised by the fact it's a white cloud behind, and the bike is white, therefore the flash is needed to fill in, but it's all lost against the background, and therefore it doesn't pop like I feel it should. No doubt this photographer has skills, but I know there are better pictures on here that deserve POD more than this, it simply links nicely with one of the front page articles and I think has been chosen in a hurry. Hope that provides some more insight into my comments.
It's a good picture, but not POD worthy in my Op. Was looking at a lot of yesterday's new pictures... Well, yesterday... And I came across a few handfuls of pictures that are a bit more noteworthy. Regardless, would have been nice to see this DH event in person.
It's not overexposed at all, nor is it "poorly" framed, the framing is bugging me a wee bit, I would like it a great deal more if the rider was perhaps just a tiny bit further away from the guys head below him. It's a strange and risky choice for POD but it's not a bad photograph.
Trail: Montmartre Riders: Tim Bentley Description: After the 2007 edition, the Montmartre Downtown was back in Paris this last week-end. As you can imagine, to see some guys ride down the streets of Paris during a competition is always a unique moment and a lot of people, tourists and fans, was there to see that. Tim Bentley, from the Morewood United Team, jumps the big step-down in the front of the Sacré Coeur and he seems to ride on the people heads!
