Selected by Ian Hylands - The Champery 4X was a pretty gnarly track. It was nice to see people taking different lines and passing, but some of the lines ended up being a little bit sketchy. Not to mention that it looked super slick. The end result was more than a few spectacular crashes, such as this one...

anyways, nice picture and an interesting one in that case because it doesnt use the typical pod picture with close to perfect balance and lines of composition. This one uses good a-symmetric balance which draws the eye towards the diagonal lines of the rider and the bike!Well done!

There isnt much of a difference between clips and flats so i dont know why everyone says 'thats why I ride flats' or 'SPD Sucks' on these types of pictures...you feel the same pain when you fall clipped in as you do flats, you just come unclipped...its not a big difference

This crash probably took only a second to occur and he's just entering the impact (btw this is @nofootcanman) which means his body is still in a straight position keeping him clipped to the pedal, but about mid impact (another half second or so) he will become unclipped.

arrgh! i hate it when people go on about flat pedals being better! when you get used to clips its just like riding flat! and yes your feet might not come out sometimes, but what difference does it make when you've crashed anyway? the race is lost... and clips dont make you crash anyway if anything they've helped me crash less you have more control over the bike. if clips are so bad in the eyes of you stubborn tunnel vision goons then why is it that the majority of the top 20 world cup riders use them...

Exactly, Josh. Clips give more control and make climbing easier since you can pull your pedal up too when you can only push flats down (not that climbing was an issue here). The only downside is that pro's go so fast that sometimes it is nearly impossible for them to unclick in time. On the other hand, flats make it easier to style your whips and other tricks and you can bail quicker when you're about to, or, crashing.

what do clipless vs flats have to do with this .........they have nothing to do with the crash!!!!! is that why so many top World class DH'ers race in clips?? I would suggest Time pedals though over anything else out there!! stay far away from the flats......

I can't believe these people. Spend thousands of dollars sometimes two figures for a bike but cannot invest $$ to save their necks.
I do not understand the logic.
Safety first should be regulated especially to a sport like DH etc.... etc.... braces are not cheap but somebody should make an effort to be affordable if u can't afford one or at least pay half of it and half will be a donation from a manufacturer. There's a lot of ways but i guess money talks and u know what walks. Exact same process for a car seat. There's organization that will give you a free car seat if you cannot afford one.
This will save anybody having a horrific crash like my role model and mentor Tara Llane.

@meandmybike48 - Please don't take this the wrong way but I am thankful that the use of these in races is still a personal choice and, should there ever be races that require their compulsory use then I for one won't be attending them. For those who choose to ride in them it's great that they take their safety seriously and I am fully supportive of kids etc wearing them. However, I know that I and others very much struggle to ride in them. It's not for want of trying, it's just that if you move your neck a lot when riding (as I do) a neck brace by their very design limits that movement. As a consequence I ride badly and have far more issues with than without. Things like this should be down to the choice of the individual rider and those not wearing them (or wearing them, I notice people have issue with that too) should not be derided and should not be branded idiotic/stupid/lacking in common sense etc.

It is not an issue of money, common sense or a lack of a desire to protect ones-self, it is instead a matter of comfort, and how it integrates into that persons body movements on a bike. There is also the matter of when you wear it - I know that I ride the exact same trails on my AM bike in an open face helmet that I also ride on my DH bike with full face. Do I suddenly start wearing a full face for AM riding? Do I not wear a brace on these trails and instead only on bigger tracks? This should absolutely be for the rider to make their choice on and not down to the bystanders and race organisers etc to push upon them.

Sorry but he's not riding downhill....... he's riding 4x, where every pedal stroke counts, and the quickest out of the gate usually wins..... and clips make some people faster in DH, infact most pro's ride clips for DH. Why? For fun? In DH it's more of a personal prefarence thing, but it's still the fastest for most riders.

You people need to look at fivetens.... clipped in feeling without the retardedness of clips. It prevents things like the above photo from happening.

I run 510s sometimes and clips other times, and they are nothing similar! With 5,10s your feet are solid to the pedal, but can still get bounced off through rock gardens etc. Also fivetens don't held accelaration, as if you pull up your feet come off the pedals, and therefor same with efficiency and bike control. Clips however alow your feet to move freely for a ceirtain amount (the float) giving a feeling of standing on pedals made of ice, however the added accelaration and control wins over for four cross. Also this guy's riding at the world champs, therefor I think he's looked at five tens, and decided for clips.
