Selected by Ian Hylands - This is an awesome photo. It's not a completely set up staged shot, which is sometimes refreshing, it's things as they are, journalistic almost, and very well done for that style. The perfectionist in me would have moved the plastic and the guy on the landing, the wheelbarrow could stay, but I like that Patto didn't. This is well lit and well composed, and a sick nothing!
both flashes at full power... i had to stop the exposure down a little bit, as if i had it any faster, the flashes wouldn't have done much as it was too bright.. One flash was in the wheel barrow, and the other to the left out of frame
I would disagree about the flashes being overdone. I love bright lighting & underexposed bg's. That with a chilled nothing makes my eyes happy haha Looks like he's ready for Scotty to beam him up!
I'll second that, the flash hardly looks overdone, in fact he has a mostly grey and white bike and grey jeans and they still have detail, so I'd say the flash is pretty bang on...
@duncanPalka, actually you need to have just as much if not more flash on a bright day. In order to actually freeze something at 1/250th of a second the flash needs to be at least 1 if not 2 or even 3 stops brighter than the ambient light. Otherwise there will be significant blur in the image.
At first glance I thought this pic looked a bit 'busy' with the plastic bags and the house etc in the background. But after taking it in, I actually like those things being there. It captures the country essence of Australia. Mates out having fun in the paddocks.
I'm no photographer by a long shot, but I like the flash work and have had to use flashes on similar days and even sunny days to freeze the rider and overcome shadow. I've had similar effects from flashes and thought WTF when I've viewed them on the computer, and do not believe that this is Photoshopped.
Great shot Patto, I think you've captured him at the ultimate time.
I'm sorry i very rarely say this but it just doesnt look real it definatly looks photoshopped the rider just doesnt look real or like hes suposed to be there! sorry for hating but... my opinion and everyone is entitled to it!
now wat would be good is if he was holding a beer as well to go with his beer belly or is that just his t- shirt? who cares its a sick shot. well done.
bmxers have way bigger balls than pussy mtbers with expensive bikes. NO disrespect i am both a professional DH racer and a amazing street bmxer. sweet pic too. still my warm up trick though
