It's an idiomatic expression that pretty much means "to be enthusiastic or obsessed" with something. Or you can think of it like a disease if you will, For example say, I am infected with "art and design" and I spread the virus "art and design" to you, leading you to replicate the same sort of idea or behavior as I... , now you could infect someone else too etc., etc...
