I'm no photography expert but I believe they used a timed flash to freeze the rider in the shot. Basically in low light situations they by leaving the shutter open it allows more light to hit the "film" aka sensor. The sudden flash of light causes the rider to become more exposed at that moment than he is at any given moment which in effect freezes him. If you look in the lower right corner you can see the rest of the flash. I've never used this technique though so correct me if I'm wrong.

I expect that is "2nd curtain flash". The flash fires just before the 2nd curtain closes and ends the exposure. You can then have a long exposure to capture the dark background, and a quick (1/20,000 sec) burst of flash to freeze the biker. Easier said than done though.
This great pic took a lot of work and inspiration.

@Marlfox87, maybe Bic-Col had the foreground light off when he was exposing for the background, switched them on for however long he needed, then unleashed the rider.

@Marlfox87 & Argyll, It didn't even strike me about 2nd curtain, didn't think of that at all! Great idea, and it worked out amazingly :O Thanks for that Smile

And also Marlfox87, depending on the light he has on his head it could be just the exposure from that, if you look at the literal ramp, it has no source of light but yet is still lit up along with every other part he rode.. Juts a suggestion though not sure at all!
